Rampage - 7/1/2022

Recommended Posts

That was a pretty dope hour of pro wres!

I wonder if the mini Covid outbreak on Wednesday affected the battle royal entrants. I get it...you can't have a Miro or a Malakai win this for a week build tv main event. Mox/Brody is probably going to be pretty damn good.

Tag match and Toni/Nyla were super fun too.

Such an easy watch. The show fly by.

Well, I am certainly glad I don't have to riot.

It's sometimes very nice to get exactly what you ask for. I think King is a good match up for Mox because he's a guy where it's gonna be believable for Mox to have to fight back from underneath after being overpowered. I also think that King will come out of the match looking like more of a star, even in defeat.

And that final elimination was sick

The main event was my kind of wrestling! (Hard hitting and violent).

i also like exciting, silly, and/or fun pro wrestling (among other types as well). The tag match was really fun.

I don't want to make a habit out of complaining about good ole JR, who really is the second or third best of all time (after Solie and maybe Walton) but good heavens, he was just the shits today. Rambling on non-stop whether or not he had anything to contribute, and grumbling almost constantly. Complaining because someone didn't hit a double wristlock is just complaining for the sake of complaining. Which is what I'm doing.

So:

Just Drew::Bux and Cole:: J Lowe:Shafir::Gordlow:Good Ole

I'll try not to be a dick about JR shitting on the wrestling and the wrestlers every time it happens.

I'm really excited for Tully Blanchard Enterprises Featuring Toa on AEW TV!

And probably Wardlow being anointed as well!

Walton. Not Waller. Ken Waller was in Pumping Iron.

Jim Ross was sleepy/mailing it in the whole hour too. Remember when he and Schiavone were making wisecracks about/making it clear they did not watch Rampage while commentating on Dynamite? Khan took that personal.

Oooohhh! I almost forgot about Hungie and Hangman!

I should do a whole Navel Gazing thing about how perfect that was!

You see, in this particular "Universe" good guys can have actual legitimate friends! And they can help each other, trust each other, not screw one another over willy nilly for selfish reasons.

They don't have to be like that (as per the lovely contrasting Swerve/Lee ongoing story) but they can be.

Also the Lindsey Buckinham on What('s) Up With That?-style 'Nah, I was just kidding' gestures were really funny.

As a person who, in real life, has friends where we help and trust and generally don't screw over and back-stab each other I appreciate seeing that reality reflected in the pro wrestling that I watch and enjoy!

Also: A Double Wrist Lock is a Kimura.

And Takeasoup is the suplex master. That was the best German since Udo Dirkschneider.

Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.

Royal Rampage was kinda disappointing aside from the incredible visual of Brody choking a limp Darby for the elimination. I get that if you want to elevate guys like Brody and KOR you have to give them Ws, but nobody believed either had a god damn chance against Mox so they just feel really flat as choices imo.

Nick getting in some greedy cool spots with the double ring set-up. Beautiful.

Storm/Rose was pretty good too.

Here's the thing:

Brody winning the Royal Rampage could very well lead to Mox vs Black and BCC vs House of Black, which will rule. Hard.

Now someone please tell me he dropped a "Holla holla" after and started dribbling two invisible basketballs when he made that annoucement

I really liked the visual of the two battle royals going on at the same time. I don't know if AEW's little wrinkles to conventional matches are "great" but they at least are distinct and make for some fun storytelling opportunities. I really liked Butcher and Blade having their moment too. They've been at least reliable since getting to the company. Liked the little bit with Hangman and Silver at the beginning too. I was talking with friends recently that Dark Order seems to be not a thing anymore and at least they got a mention of being Page's running buddies.

Nyla's weather promo before the main event *chef's kiss*

Okay didn't think that far ahead but House of Black vs. BCC in almost any capacity sounds great. Malakai vs. Danielson or Mox, Kings of the Black Throne vs. any iteration. Murph's still out, right? Him vs. Yuta could totally steal any show.

The battle royal was an ok concept, but definitely too rushed for a 1 hour show. Swerve and Takeshita got some nice spots, and I loved Brody getting a big win. Totally credible elimination against a higher ranked guy to set up what should be a very good tv title defense for Mox.

Also had to love Nick Jackson channeling Rey Mysterio at Fall Brawl 96 with excellent double-ring offense.

Royal Rampage was fun. Lots of potential winners so it really was hard to tell who would win, even down to the final 2 I thought we might get another round of Darby/Moxley. The eliminations started coming way fast towards the end and Orange wasn't in there long enough, but I enjoyed his epic final entry entrance.  Solid main event and I dig the new tag team of ThunderStorm.

This is something that has always bugged me in the Rumble. If you and your buddy are in there together why would you not team up to give one of you a better chance of winning? (I mean aside from VKM "every man is an island" world view"). You also had other teams like Butcher and Blade working together.

Anyway really enjoyed the Rampage Rumble, better concept than the casino battle royale for sure and the red/blue ring assignments was kinda a fun touch.

And I've been enjoying the commentary. I feel JR is much better post commentary and the whole show felt like watching wrestling with my two favorite uncles with Tony's enthusiasm (God its great that AEW is going to be Tony's legacy not shit ass end of wcw), if I had Uncle's who liked wrestling. Also cool to get a Brody King singles match as I was thinking that we haven't seen a ton of him due to the crowded roster.

Now I hate the idea of the tag champs being in an elimination match. Its stupid to have the contenders have to beat the champs twice to win the belt. If they are good enough to be in there with the champs belts on the line. However I did enjoy the match, the bucks are good when someone can reign them in a bit and get their stuff into the context of an actual wrestling match.

Toni continues to impress, she should be the next women's champ. Much like Punk taking the belt of Hangman time to run with the hot hand

Having never seen RUSH before I thought he looked great.

Id love LFI to add a few more members and go head to head with BCC. I need to see RUSH vs Claudio & Danielson especially.

I have a feeling I’ll be referring to imaginary weather maps behind me more often in my regular life.

The Rumble was a big improvement from what I was complaining about that last battle royal a few weeks ago.

Its not just getting a bunch of high spots in as opposed to stumbling around throwing weak punches.  But battle royals always seem to drain individuals of their character (outside of maybe a finish).  But their were lots of guys out there for this one where they were very much filling their ringtime with actions that inform who they are and what they are about.  Hangman and Silver being bros, teams sticking together, or Hobbs trying to snatch Swerve when he walked past to the other ring.  Good stuff.

Brody murdering Darby at the end was chefs kiss.  I’m ready for the Mox match.  Didn’t realize how much I wanted to see it before now.  I expect Mox will bleed out the rest of his blood for this one.  He has got to be running low.

It’s impressive what you can stuff into an hour long show.  I always associate a 60 minute show with Saturday morning, foot dragging, minimal content of consequence, bullshit Wrestling Challenge.

For me wrestling really didn’t grow the fuck up until there was a weekly show that was at least 2 hours.  So the idea of an hour show in 2022 seemed like a regression.  But here it’s really not.  Rampage isn’t just stuffed to the gills.  It’s also very efficient.

Loved the double springboard Meltzer Driver.

Bong rips at 6:30 in the morning is a great way to start the long weekend.

Have a good one you turkeys!

Royal Rampage worked better than Casino Battle Royal. With these, it's all about the oddball bits of interaction, seeing Butcher and Blade standoff against Darby/Orange/Swerve, having Max and Butcher do the scissor, Starks and Hobbs vs Page, Takeshita vs Swerve, Silver face off against Hobbs, etc. And they have great characters and they delivered along those lines. I wrote too many words for Monday night between Blood and Guts and that.

It's funny that I've only ever seen "Good" Nyla, since I've been watching for less than a year, so I have no idea what anyone ever complained about with her. She works her personality into her matches so well and then can back it up with hard shots. Very good timing on cutoffs too. Shafir is way better at being a cornerman than a wrestler, sorry. Bryce, during the commercial break called her out on attacking Storm. "She's ok, she's ok, she's ok." "She was standing up a second ago!" "She slipped!" Great stuff.

SATURDAY REFLECTIONS:  Gotta get this in because I drive to my sister's house in North CACKALACKY! for the July 2nd Celebration!  U-S-A!  U-S-A!  This battle royal is more a Celebration Of Our Gigantic Roster than another five star contender.  Though Darby Allin getting his stuff in during the Tony Nese Cup Of Coffee made him primed to sell for EVERYBODY else on his side.  Darby Allin is the glue of this match.  Tony Nese is having a good week- making Wheeler Yuta look like Ricky Steamboat on Dark and getting Darby primed to be a whipping boy for nine other dudes.  And it starts with him being Garganoed into the guardrails by the Butcher.  I just noticed the Butcher and Max scissoring.  I just thought about that in a pre-Acclaimed definition context and it is... alluring.  Darby takes B and B's offense because this is basically a Darby Allin Gauntlet match.  Penta and Rush are such natural enemies and I am so stoked about their feud.  Yes, I am.  Penta and Rey Fenix are what Rush needed for his ROH title run.  Swerve Shane Strickland is the auxillary Darby Allin.  Swerve gets in a little offense upon entry and then HE settles in for taking a bunch of dudes offense.  I like that while YOU RUBES were watching in picture in picture,  Penta and Rush continued to beat the shit out of each other.  Dustin comes in to make Powerhouse Hobbs look like a killer. PENTA vs RUSH! PENTA vs RUSH!  Frankie Kazarian comes in and beats on Darby as Matt Hardy can barely enjoy his cup of coffee before being eliminated.  Konosuke Takeshita is the Boss Level for Darby and Swerve and they barely survive his awesome flurry of offense.  Brodie King goes straight to Dustin and they almost miss King destroying Dante Martin.  Takeshita greets Orange Cassidy to establish Alpha Dominance of the Blue ring and who gets to continue beating the shit out of Darby Allin!  Takeshita establishes dominance but succumbs to the tag team of the Butcher and the Blade, as one man cannot stop him!  Swerve eliminating Cassidy is such a great dick move and it adds to the skeeviness of Strickland's character.  Such a great hustler.  Then everybody gets eliminated and Brodie Kings chokes Darby Allin out in the most dramatic and House of Black way possible.  Moloch would be PLEASED!  Darby Allin is your Double Battle Royal superstar.  I can hear it backstage.  "Okay, Darby, I need you to make 10 guys look like total assbeaters for thirty minutes and then we need you to look like you died to get over Brodie King."  "Sure."  Hook isn't any more comprehensible on the INTERNATIONAL FEED.  He IS still the ULTIMATE WARRIOR!  The Goto/YOSHI-HASHI match was pretty much to try to get the Young Bucks back as a winning tag team after they put everybody over for the last couple of months.  Well, actually, I guess putting over FTR.  I can't remember the finish of the Rey Fenix/Penta match so you can add that in.  Bucks need a dominate win and they really establish their dominance after a pretty elaborate comeback by Goto/YOSHI-HASHI.  I love Goto but his Lariats suck and his finisher is garbage.  But he has babyface fire.  I love that the two secret good workers to come over and show the world that they actually exist in the spectrum of international wrestling is YOSHI-HASHI and Kanemaru.  Get them out of the New Japan midcard and they can get a big crowd into a wrestling match.  Oh Jonathan Gresham,  I dig you but I wouldn't go trying to ascend to Blackpool Combat Club levels of wrestling.  I'm looking forward to the match with the GATES OF AGONY though.  Nyla was made to wrestle Toni Storm.  Nyla laying it in is the best Nyla.  Marina Shafir being a cranky bastard and angry mom is so fucking great.  She needs to be the point of Deebs complete face turn.  Nyla taunting Toni Storm during the INTERNATIONAL FEED and the added assbeating of Strom elevates this to MAYBE second best match of the week.  The crowd gets behind her struggle to make the ropes!  Another part you only get with the INTERNATIONAL FEED!  That was THIRD best Toni Storm Flying Hip Attack of the month of June.  Toni Storm is over in Detroit!  Storm is so great at selling Nyla's HOSS offense.  She was great selling Thunder Rosa's conventional offense.  Maybe Toni Storm is the Darby Allin of the women's division.  Marina Shafir postmatch is so fucking EVIL and it counter well to the look of technico bliss on the face of Toni Storm who struggled to get through Nyla Rose and vanquished her and shit.  Thunder Rosa is smart to latch onto to Toni Storm's superior worker's wagon and ride it.  They REALLY need a women's tag title.  That was such a fun episode of wrestling.
