Dynamite - 5/18/2022

I think Claudio is coming in. There are guys when they come on the market that are just obvious no-brainers to Khan and it's not hard to figure out who they are because they tend to be total no-brainers to us too. Even if we're not right to think so or even if we might discount someone else. I'm pretty certain he feels like he HAS to have Claudio on his roster. And when you have guys like Regal in interviews outright saying that if he was a promotion owner, he'd cut four guys to hire Claudio...

Who do we think debuts at the PPV? Claudio? Gargano? I still want Bray to pop up and do spooky fun shit and have a great match with Danielson and some okay to pretty good matches with some other capable wrestlers in AEW.

Do we think they're still going to do a Casino Battle Royale? I really hope so. As big of a clusterfuck as those things are, I still enjoy them. I'd assume they announce it on Rampage this week, or Dynamite the next, but if they don't I have to assume that the Owen Hart tournament is going to replace it and we get the winners having the right to an upcoming title match (TBS/TNT or World titles). I think it'd be insane not to announce the battle royale and put it on the pre-show like it was back in 2019. The depths of their talent pool is nuts and some people are going to miss out being on a huge show in Las Vegas for the first time.

Talking about this match brings back memories of me just starting my current job back in 2019, and watching the entire Buy-In on my break at work on my smoke break (10 minute break turned into an hour!). It's wild to look back at that match and compare it to the loaded roster we have today. WE NEED A SUNNY DAZE RETURN. Dustin Thomas versus MJF is the feud we deserved, but never got, goddamnit.

I've mentioned this before, but it's such a strange talking point to me that there are people that think AEW shouldn't hire former WWE talent. Why not bring in talent that can help your show if the talent is available and interested? Just because someone might say something mean about you on the internet? Ohhhh noooooo...

Oh wow, I actually watched that episode because of Takeshita's return match and Suzuki facing QT Marshall. I skipped over that match because, y'know, Tony Nese, hahaha. I also generally avoid Elevation because I don't like Mark Henry and Paul Wight on commentary.

You know how, in general, it’s hard for Japanese wrestlers to connect with the broader US audience, but sometimes a guy like The Great Muta or Tajiri comes around and that broader audience is like “shit, this guy is awesome”?

I am convinced that Takeshita is one of those guys.

I am convinced that if you had Claudio tell dad jokes for 2 hours Dynamite would have higher ratings than the final episode of M*A*S*H.

It's difficult, given you've gotta build the ROH reboot as a big deal, but I also would love to see Daniel Garcia beat Yuta for the Pure title, and then refuse to defend it unless it's in wacky gimmick matches like a Punjabi Prison or a Tuxedo match.

Blindfold match against Lance Archer with Jake hitting the DDT on Garcia

I like Johnny Whatshisname just fine but I don't really see what he brings long term that they don't all ready have if he's a signing. If its a one off then it was a fun surprise.

How much gum did Fenix have in his mouth. Really enjoyed that match. I find KOR to be a bit dull, just a solid worker with out the other attributes of pro-wrestling. And Fenix can be a train wreck but I think KOR reigned in some of Fenix's tendencies.

I think that one last nostalgia ride for the Hardys is cool but man has Jeff seemed to be on deaths door these last couple of shows. Maybe just keep him in tags.

And Riho has worn pink and black in the women's tournament just not at the same time

i'm not gonna read the whole thread, but here's thoughts:

starting off with Samoa Joe? awesome! and the joker is Johnny Nitro? fantastic!!  good match too, even if i saw Johnny directing traffic from the top rope.

Hangman Page vs. Takeshita was fucking awesome. Never seen Takeshita before his match a week or two back vs. Lethal. the man's damn good.

Lee & Swerve are top 5 ranked now? they've had what? 3 matches? i thought AEW's tag division was supposed to be stacked.

Wardlow looked king-sized in taking the lashes. excellent segment.

O'Reilly vs Fenix was a lot of fun. FUCK YOU AEW for making me excited for Samoa Joe vs. Fenix and then not booking it. i like KOR the most out of his trio, but that's a pretty low bar.

the jericho/JAS - Regal/BCC bit sucked. but i did appreciate Jericho insinuating Stadium Stampede, only for Moxley to immediately shut it down.

women's match was fine. TBH i wasn't really that interested. Maki Itoh was a nice surprise, but obviously she wasn't going over here.

serena deeb's promo wasn't great either. i could tell she was speaking from the heart, but it just didn't translate. i'm still looking forward to the match, tho.

Cole/Hardy? bleh. don't care about either of these guys.

These can be added to Double or Nothing:

AEW World Tag Team Championship: Jurassic Express vs. Keith Lee/Swerve Strickland vs. Ricky Starks/Powerhouse Hobbs. #FTR get added next week?

Sting/Darby Allin/Hardy Boys vs. Undisputed Elite or Young Bucks vs. Hardy Boys. By doing the former, you save the latter for another show. Thinking it'll be the eight man tag.

Bryan Danielson/Jon Moxley/Eddie Kingston/Santana/Ortiz vs. Jericho Appreciation Society.

Announced in the last hour.

Loved Hangman vs Takeshita, it was all I wanted. Both guys have similar styles with extremely heavy hands and feet and you could feel it. I was expecting the GTS from Hangman but I can’t be the only one that thought he was going for a Pepsi Plunge for a second there, right?

I feel Eddie has kinda been lost in the shuffle now that there’s so many people involved in this feud, specially throwing two massive superstars into the mix, which strangely feel like background extras a bit. It’s weird Bryan being so quiet on the mic lately since Regal came in.

I don’t get why Jeff is wrestling  every week when the guy is clearly hurting with every breath he takes. He should be saved for special tag matches and that’s it at this point.

There's a question I ask myself regularly, and it's one of the reasons I'm enjoying this Jeff Hardy run far more than I expected to: how much of the pain Jeff displays week to week is worked beautifully and how much is the real deal? Whatever the answer, I too completely believe his pain and it makes the pace, etc. of his matches all the better for it. I just hope it doesn't end in tragedy, but that's been said throughout his entire career.

My feelings on Adam Cole are mixed. I don't really care for the guy. He's not automatic change the channel material for me, but I don't look forward to seeing him. I've enjoyed some of his matches and some have left me rolling my eyes. So, I'm in the same boat as a lot of you here. The interesting thing is, he's extremely over with AEW crowds. So, it's not a case of TK shoving something down our throats that isn't over. He's over as hell, but he's definitely not my thing. So, while I don't want to see him win the Owen, it's kind of hard to say it's bad booking.

This week was a test of my contention that it's his intro and singalong that's over with the crowds, not him in the ring. But I also can't confirm that because of my bias.

I would rank the Adam Page match as "Not as good as Takeshita as Cutler, though that match had Cutler kicking out of way too much crap and wasn't as good as Cutler vs Bear Bronson."

For your sake as much as mine, I'm not watching any Page match unless I have to. As someone who almost completely found a way to avoid 2010s NJPW and has no use for it, it's still jarring to see stuff so influenced by that stuff in an AEW which has more than half gone over to amazing Neo-Bret-ism.

Will you be watching Adam Page vs. CM Punk with the run Punk's put on in AEW?
