Dynamite - 5/11/2022

Recommended Posts

This last episode of Dynamite proved to me that it doesn't matter who I'm hyped for or who I *want* to succeed - some talent just does it anyway.

My response to the Tony Nese signing was the same as everyone. Why? Stacked roster. Enough NXT/205 castoffs. No gimmick workrate dude. And yet every single match I've seen him have since the signing has been great. A consistent highlight of DARK, has chemistry with everyone, all his stuff looks good and reads well on TV, he's exactly the kind of guy you want to put over a newer midcard babyface act.

Smart Mark Sterling is a binder. The flour in your roux, the cream of mushroom in your casserole. Talking for Jade, getting heat for Nese, being the in-house lawyer for contract based angles, or as a flesh shield for MJF, he hits ever note he's supposed to,does it with enthusiasm and never detracts from the featured performers. He's emerging as one of the company's most useful assets.

I was of the opinion that Toni Storm was mildly overrated and maybe not super-dedicated to the business anymore but thus far she's proven to be the biggest shot in the arm the AEW women's division has ever seen. Every match she's had has worked for me.  Way less timing/footwork/positioning issues some of the greener talent has been struggling with, she can competently promo, she's young and stunning and all that, seriously, the quality of women's matches on Dynamite seems to be way up over the last month and I think her presence is the most important piece. She keeps this up though the Owen Hart Tournament and I'm gonna advocate her being their top babyface.

I hate bringing up WWE in an AEW thread. But Santino, R Truth, Stevie Richards and Fandango are four of the most effective performers they've ever had. Nothing wrong at all with having a guy or three in the league who is there to chew up 10 minutes of TV time with some ridiculous antics. "Wrestling is serious business" has diminishing returns if that's all you have on a show. You give the kids something fun. You give the more hardcore fans a palate cleanser before you head to the next "actual" match. And I think a lot of wrestlers eat that stuff up, too.

I wish they'd save the early stuff to help someone not named Tony Nese get over, but it's fine. Danhausen's always going to be a fun act. They could have explained him better about the power of the curse or whatever. But he's a fun act.

Writing this is also a good opportunity for me to plug the amazing Fandango/Summer Rae vs. Santino/Emma match from NXT way back when.

Guest Stefanie Without Stefanie

Last night finally made Danhausen click for me, because having been unfamiliar with his indie work, it was nice to see he wasn't a guy that was going to come in and go 50/50 with someone with his kind of gimmick. He got squashed and that was fine because the impression that I get from the folks that dig him is that they just are happy to see him no matter how his matches unfold. I think there's a lot to be said for a guy who can show up for maybe three minutes and be that popular. Why tinker with a formula that works?

As for the rest of the show, Jamie Hayter deserves the world.

I don't know what "Foreign Object >>>>>> Legreca" means but after seeing that dipshit's sign for the 50th time I was wishing I could send painful anal polyps through the TV.

I'd love to see a ban on all signs on the hardcam side unless they're somewhat related to the show you're there to see.  I'm tired of:

  • Non-wrestler fatheads
  • Signs begging TK to sign some indy nobody
  • Signs made because you're desperate to get a mention on a podcast
  • Signs made because you're desperate to get a mention on a youtube video
  • Signs made to pop your dumb friends, followers, etc.

The toolbag in the front row in the white shirt spent the whole show holding up stupid signs and fatheads or looking at his phone, probably refreshing Twitter or Truth.social or whatever to see if he's getting attention.  It was sad after a while and I started to wonder if he maybe had a mental condition, because he ignored like 97% of the show and every time the camera would come on him, he'd obsessively and quite mechanically hold up a sign.

FUUUUUCK just give that ticket to a little kid who will actually enjoy the show.  I hope those seats were comps because I'd be contemplating self harm if my life was so empty that I paid good money for great seats to an amazing show just to not watch it and instead hold up a bunch of signs to get validation from people just as lame as me.

This isn't gonna help Tony get over, it's gonna get Danhausen and Hook over. He's just the mechanic.

I'm reminded of the Terry Funk quote from the Forever Hardcore doc where he wonders aloud whether guys like Hogan, Raven, Jake aren't the really smart guys in the business whereas the people like him who sacrificed their bodies were the dumb ones. He certainly had a point.

Starts to nod approvingly, stops and has a sad instead.

I don't know how in the span of a few months have I gone from super excited CM Punk is back and enjoying everyone of his matches/AEW involvement, so being annoyed at his very existence and face while still enjoying his matches/AEW involvement, lol.  It's quite a conundrum.

I like everything he does, yet still don't like his face.  It's the Rob Riggle/Step Brothers effect I suppose.  I want Hangman to retain so badly.

That was a tremendous Dynamite, another in the long string of them.  Outside of the aforementioned, and I admit irrational hate of CM Punk's face as of late, I love everything about the current direction of AEW.

I'm hoping Toni Storm wins the womens Owen and after last night, I'd be okay with a Jeff Hardy Owen win on the mens side(depending on who the Joker is.)

I'm fairly certain that exact same dude has been front row center with shitloads of bad signs on other shows.

I HAD THESE EXACT SAME THOUGHTS AND IDEAS LAST NIGHT!! Have Tony K himself roll out during the first commercial break, give the guy his money back, have him escorted to the upper deck where his ticket is switched with someone excited to watch some wrestling.

Unfortunately while I am not a fan of the people doing these signs ranting about them online is the most counterproductive thing possible because it gives them the attention they crave. Not mentioning them deprives them of that attention and is the best way to make it stop.

What a great night for singles wrestling.

Very surprised with Cole winning but him acting as an HBK proxy to be a big villain in a Hart tournament is pretty good.

I’m guessing we’re getting a Three Way Tag Title match at DON with Christian possibly turning on JB after he loses the titles. Seems like the direction they’re going for. I enjoy seeing Ricky win and that was a pretty big one over Jungle Jack.

Surprised at the total squash of Danhausen but his character can take it and this is more about getting Hookhausen to happen than anything else. I popped big for the handshake.

Blackpool Combat Club coming out to stand up to the Sports Entertainers without having to say a single word was great and made sense, no explanation needed. Loved Regal getting a shot in.

Main event was all kinds of crazy with another surprising winner. Nice seeing Jeff learned something from the time HHH pinned him the same way back in 2008. The Swanton by Darby to the chairs is one of the craziest spots I’ve ever seen, outshining the slightly leas but still crazy one done by Hardy to the steps.

I mean I get the point he's trying to make, but Hogan, Raven, and Jake haven't been associated with "healthy bodies" in over 20 years. In fact, I'd say Funk himself looked at least on par with Hogan and significantly better than Jake in 98/99. Raven didn't start to seem broken down until his TNA days, but I also don't get holding him up as an example of someone working "smart/safe" style either.

True, but I doubt a guy who’s a superfan of Bubba Ray’s Toxic Shithead Old Guy Rasslin Show (I think that’s the name of it) is reading a message board of such distinction as this!

When I think back over Raven's career he's more of a guy understood its more valuable to take one big spot at a big show (like the chair shot heard around the world) than do a bunch of dangerous spots on small shows. For a 'HARDCORE GUY he sure seemed to understand picking his moments. I think him and Jake are more beat up from heavy drug use than anything else

Watching this last night and I think my two biggest takeaways were - There was a massive missed opportunity to give Dax the Ax a real push in this tournament. He should have been on the other side of the bracket and made the finals vs whoever is winning. A TNT title run would not be out of place for him.

Storm v Hayter should NOT turn into Deeb vs Shida. People wanting a rematch ASAP but I say no. Keep them apart for 6-12 months at least. In a perfect world they would interact backstage or ringside but wouldnt face off again until the finals of next year's Owen. This should be something where they only very occasionally cross paths and then one day it just explodes into the two of them kicking the piss out of each other in a "Lights Out" or 2/3 falls match.

I really did not like the set-up of JAS last night. It would have been a lot better if Eddie and Co. came out first so they looked outnumbered again followed by “Wild Thing” or the Danielson song and the BCC coming out. Just not how to keep the spotlight on Eddie. Minor nitpick on a really good show.

I thought the main was a really weird match to have in the Owen Hart tournament in front of his family, but I may just be oversensitive.

I had the same thought actually earlier in the night during the promo where they were talking about putting each other in the hospital, and also wondered if I was being oversensitive. I guess it's a sort of weird, mild trauma response that many of us must share on some level if we were watching that night.

Totally get your point, I guess I just figured it would be more of an OC thing where we'd get to see him a bit (and like you, I'm also unfamiliar with his indie stuff, so I legit have no idea how he is in the ring). I guess I probably should have considered that before my post yesterday.

Great show but one thing popped into my head: when Wardlow was aiming to wreck Smart Mark, I thought it would be phenomenal to have a huge, intimidating guy like that scare his opponent into setting up the very table they would then be driven through. Just pure ownage.

The thing to remember is that Orange Cassidy was a top-of-his-class CHIKARA superworker hiding in plain sight, while Danhausen is some guy. Like he can bump and sell and get through a match but at no point has he been considered anything remotely close to a workhorse.
