Double or Nothing IV - 5/29/2022

Really, the title match and the ten-man are the only things that’ll probably require 20+ minutes. I’d probably put the Hardys/Bucks in that group too, but Matt and Jeff shouldn’t be going that long.

I'm hoping that KENTA costs Punk the match, to set up a match at Forbidden Door.

1-Because I want to see Kenta/Punk

2-I want Punk nowhere near the title.

1 - When asked, CM Punk said:

KENTA hasn't wrestled since sustaining bad injuries vs. Hiroshi Tanahashi at this year's Wrestle Kingdom.

2 - I predict CM Punk will walk into Chicago's AEW X NJPW Forbidden Door as AEW World Champion. Punk will defend against a big NJPW name who can do the job in a singles match and ditto for Kazuchika Okada as IWGP World Heavyweight Champion, I'm hoping that's Bryan Danielson.

Question for my UK bredrin. I'm going to be back in Blighty when this is on. What is the best way to order AEW shows?

Welcome back home, bud.

FITE:

Unlimited replays. Only issue I've had is looking on my profile for past shows I've ordered. Had to type out the name of the show in the search bar. Find its easier to log in on the Fire stick than the Fire tablet.

Card updated. Assuming Wardlow wins, we're now at 11 matches for the evening.

This is gonna be one of those 'fast paced' shows.

Probably 12 with the TNT Championship. I can see the fans shitting on that.

Honestly, MJF vs Wardlow should get the Lesnar vs Cena from Summerslam treatment. Actually, a better comp would be Lesnar vs Rock because in that loss Rock was able to get some shit in. My other hope is that for the entrance we get Wardlow coming out to War Pigs even TK can buy it for cheap enough and this time he snaps out of the handcuffs instead of waiting to be uncuffed.

Best match will probably be Hangman vs Punk. Neither guy seems capable of having anything less than a really good match at this point in their careers. Probably double juice too.

I'm also looking forward to the 10 man tag just because I love a good wild brawl.

Hardys vs Bucks shouldn't go more than 10 minutes.

I'd also like to see a face win the Owen on both the men's and women's sides.

Too many matches.

I could see them do a spot tomorrow where MJF kicks the security guards out of the cage before they can uncuff Wardlow so Spears can get an advantage, only for Wardlow to break them himself because "he could do it all along" and put the fear of God into both guys.

Ishii and Naito are right there, but I think it's too soon to start burning through title matches. This should be more world-building and setting the stage for big stuff down the line than title matches with 100% obvious winners.

I think it'll be multi-tags with two singles matches for the AEW World Championship and IWGP World Heavyweight Championship though you're right that the winners be a given.

Too many matches.

Agreed on all counts particularly too many matches:

Looking at how many matches were booked on PPV cards:

Revolution 2020: 9, 2 pre-show.

Double or Nothing 2020: 9, 1 pre-show.

All Out 2020: 11, 2 pre-show.

Full Gear 2020: 9, 1 pre-show.

Revolution 2021: 9, 1 pre-show.

Double or Nothing 2021: 10, 1 pre-show.

All Out 2021: 10, 1 pre-show.

Full Gear 2021: 10, 1 pre-show.

Revolution 2022: 12, 3 pre-show.

This show will go 01:00-04:00am UK time, sometimes they go 3hrs and 30 minutes.

Maybe this is because I'm done with watching anything live in the early hours UK time, but I have no problem with the number of matches on AEW PPV's, especially when three are usually on the pre show. Watch the first half, go outside for a bit of fresh air, then watch the rest after my wrestling brain has recharged. They still fly by in half the time of a six match Premium Live Event...

I'm just glad it's on a holiday weekend here in the US so I can try and stay up late watching the whole thing while enjoying cold beverages, and then sleep in the next morning.

Absolutely! Great advice. I always wanna watch live, but these marathons are best viewed on tape delay with a (break) pause button and ffwd for the unnecessary bits (Inbetween sells, Jay/Jade? We'll see).  All that said, it'd be great if the pacing of an AEW PPV was as good at the matches.

Minor thing, but: excluding Revolution this year, you'd have to go back all the way to All Out 2020 to find a Buy-In that had more than one match. Maybe it's the new normal, who knows. I'd be perfectly okay with HOOKhausen vs Nese & Sterling and the Casino Battle Royale being on the preshow this year. One is at least a 30 minute match, the other can be a few minutes at the most.

An interference finish to this would be deeply unsatisfying. An interference finish with KENTA would be just about the worst. And there's no reason for upstanding babyface Page to need or accept such an outcome; he'd surely be obliged to offer the wronged party a rematch to settle the issue. Might as well just get it right on the PPV.

Putting that aside, I've noticed a funny trend some places I look where, anecdotally, I see a lot of people who prefer Page win think Punk is going to win and vice versa. Count me among those who think Page is going over clean with a handshake afterward, when I'd prefer Punk.

Guest Stefanie Without Stefanie

I don't see anything wrong with a 12 match show because it's going to require that some of these matches not go 15+ minutes when they could just as easily be done in 10 and nobody would be any worse off.

So with how they've been mentioning that KOR is Canadian does him winning go over like a fart in church?

The fans will just be glad they’re seeing a “moment.” If they work a hard enough match, it’ll be fine.

Is there any reason right now to take the belt off Page? That's the one thing I don't get... he can still have a dance with Mox, a returning Miro, Jericho, Eddie, some NJPW guys... hell even MJF... why drop it to Punk at this moment in time? That seems so premature when there's a lot left in the tank... you could even have Page hold onto it until Kenny returns potentially at the end of the year.

Punk's clearly the biggest star in the company and it'd be good for the brand and the belt for the clear top guy to hold it at some point, maybe even now.

Maybe some people don't like that or don't like the timing or prefer Page, but there's a clear argument for either guy. And it's not like Punk wouldn't have banger title matches with all those guys too, possibly with better promos and issues leading up to them as has been the case with much of what Punk's been involved in.

(I think I've had my lifetime fill of Punk-Jericho, but that might even surprise me)

Is B/R still the only way to stream the PPVs in the US? Revolution 2022 was a terrible feed the whole entire show and I'm concerned it will be more of the same.

You could see if a movie theater is playing it, and I think conventional PPV applies still too but B/R is the only US stream
