Isn’t Blackpool basically the English version of Coney Island?

Panama City is the Southern version of Coney Island…

From what I understand about Blackpool:

Everyone knows the touristy part of Blackpool, which is like a Coney Island or Jersey Shore town. But actually living there is a lot different. The whole economy is dependent on a tourism season that only lasts a few months. So by all accounts, there's a good amount of poverty and crime for the actual residents of Blackpool.

Either way, it's a fucking badass name.

In chronological order, #FTR as The Revival in WWE:

The Revival vs. American Alpha. NXT TakeOver: Dallas.

The Revival vs. American Alpha. NXT TakeOver: The End.

The Revival vs. #DIY. NXT TakeOver: Brooklyn II.

The Revival vs. #DIY. NXT TakeOver: Toronto. *****. I still think it's The Revival/#FTR's best match. What do you think?

The Revival vs. #DIY vs. Authors of Pain. NXT TakeOver: Orlando.

The Revival vs. Kyle O'Reilly/Bobby Fish. NXT TV, 20th November 2019.

---

The first four are must sees, especially the ***** one.

does NXT suffer from the same "directing" style with camera cuts every 1.5 seconds? because i straight up am not able to watch WWE because of that. Hoping it's a main roster issue and developmental NXT didn't have to deal with that.

They adopted some of the production techniques of Kevin Dunn during that time, but they weren’t as aggressive with it like the Dunn ran shows. Hard to really explain. You’d really just have to watch old NXT to understand what I mean. I don’t watch, but current NXT is under Dunn. So it’s a completely different beast now.

I think Jay Lethal has also had a very underrated week too. Probably also a very underrated match run since joining AEW. He’s really going to make sure he doesn’t get cheered at all against Joe.

Oh yeah, the Lethal/Moriarty match was fucking awesome but it was on the same show as FTR/Briscoes so it was instantly forgotten.  They should have just shown the Lethal/Moriarty match on Rampage tonight.

I love a match that has a forgone conclusion, but throws a curveball in there that you don’t expect, but now makes perfect sense seeing where the pieces fit after it.

Mildly disappointing to find out that “Blackpool Combat Club” is the British equivalent to “Panama City Shitkicking Society….”

I don’t know but Coney Island was a much tougher place than Panama City so I’m going to pretend it is.

I agree it’s a badass name, and that used to be Coney Island as well, and I’m pretty sure still applies to the Jersey Shore. Think of Springsteen and the people he sings about.

I can't remember a piece of heel chicanery I've enjoyed in recent history more than Lethal's lowblow.  Gresham-Bandido and Woods-Yuta were also excellent and forgotten by the Briscoes-FTR classic.

Sounds like Atlantic City (As far as I know...it's been a few years).  You have the boardwalk, which is decent, I guess.  But you get a block or so away and it's pretty fucked up.

That sums up Atlantic City pretty well. You don't want to stray real far from the casinos, especially at night.

My friend used to spend every weekend in Blackpool because his girlfriend lived their. He said he'd see quite often of a Saturday night, a drunk man would wobble up the road, drain the last of his beer bottle, then

Spoiler

pull his dick out and fill the bottle with piss. Then he'd set the bottle down and stagger on home.

And five minutes after that, another drunkard would also come up the same road,

Spoiler

see the bottle sitting on the pavement, pick it up, go Oh Wow Free Booze! and chug it all down.

As a native New Jerseyan:

Atlantic City is exactly that. There are the casinos and the boardwalk (where one can be pulled on a rickshaw in a truly depressing form of transportation) and then the rest of the city that is really bad. Inner city crime, open air drug usage, etc.

Asbury Park where Bruce for this start has a truly insane history. It is the closest big shore town to New York. It always had a poor inner city part of town. In the early 70s, they had a huge race riot. That overnight destroyed their tourism, as it was already getting a bad reputation.

All of the motels and rental houses just became vacant. Then there was a trend to move people from mental hospitals and the like into housing, and the recently abandoned shore town became where a lot of people were moved to. And a lot of the hotels became welfare hotels.

They also had all of these redevelopment projects that went bust or were political/mob scams being Jersey. There were these gigantic abandoned shells of 25-story buildings right next to the ocean. The boardwalk was also largely abandoned, but somehow the old haunted house was not tagged up with graffiti, and that was just this really eerie insanity.

I used to go to the “legendary” Stone Pony for shows. The place sucks. But I stopped going because you would have to pay off bums to not defecate in your car. It was nuts.

About 20 years ago, Asbury started getting redeveloped for real. The old Victorian houses were discovered by the New York gay community. Then a bunch of projects actually were built. The boardwalk is now great (complete with a pinball museum.) It’s also the foodie capital of Jersey. But when you cross over the rail tracks, it’s the inner city.

There are only a handful of shore towns that have stable all-year populations. The one’s that don’t are dumps in the off-season. Wildwood and Seaside Heights and the like are really bad - a lot of opioid abuse, poverty, etc. Cape May is where a lot of wealthy people vacation but in the off-season it’s brutal.

So, yeah. That probably explains Bam Bam Bigelow a bit more.

Yeah, that main event was like The Rockers (as AWA shortlived shitheels) vs '89 face Midnight Express! Which I have seen roughly none of, but still the idea is amazing! A bunch of other great stuff as well! Isn't it a bit of a travesty that Julia HART didn't qualify?

Without reading the whole thread, how does @The Natural rate this match vs the first encounter?

I love all things FTR. It makes perfect sense to me that they'd be an awesome babyface tag team because those guys don't just love professional wrestling, but they love trying to understand what works about professional wrestling. They understand not just how to put together a good match, but how to put in all of these really awesome flairs that gets everything to a different level.

Cash Wheeler is just at this entire new level of those things. He has been for a while. But he really shines as a face. It really showed to me when he was trapped in the BTE Trigger and shook his head repeatedly in a bit of fear. But it wasn't like a coward. It was like when someone is running away from Freddie Kruger.

It's still hard for me to get over having a tag match where the ref does not care about trying to keep it within the accepted rules of professional wrestling. It lets the Bucks do all of their flashy stuff, which I don't hate since they're show-off pretty boys. But man, the Bucks stuff would be so much more fun if they had to do that stuff behind a ref's back.

That said, that was a really good match. A lot of fun things with the right ending.

Thanks, @Shartnado. I definitely preferred #FTR vs. The Young Bucks II. The right team went over in #FTR. I bought two near falls, the belt shot to Wheeler's head with the trunks getting hold and Wheeler barely getting his foot on the rope from the BTE Trigger. Great finish as #FTR hit Matt with his own BTE Trigger, kiss him on the cheeks as the Young Bucks/Adam Cole do and the Big Rig for the three. *****.

There were a few things that annoyed me about the first match: The Young Bucks won. #FTR abandoning their No Flips Just Fists mantra with Cash Wheeler doing a springboard 450 degree splash and the match ending on a superkick from a injured taped up foot. I don't know why I gave it ***** now with those issues. I'll have to drop it down.

I actually really dug this aspect of the match, he was so convinced of his superiority that he went for about the stupidest thing he could have done to show off and it cost him in the worst possible way.

100% agree, Lethal's facial expression selling that he had to resort to such chicanery to beat his much younger opponent was perfect. As was Moriarty countering many of Lethal's well known moves which was emphasised by the commentary team who said he had watched a lot of tape beforehand.

Blackpool is one of many towns in England that can be compared this way. Skegness, Southend, Brighton, Great Yarmouth... The list goes on. All really nice places to visit near the seafront in the warmer months during the day. Just don't venture too far inland in the colder months at night.

From when I first saw the match, my thought was that they resorted to trying flippy moves out of desperation, but the idea still very much works. I'd rate the rematch a touch better also, but in any comparison that is remotely close, I will side with the match that had a full crowd over the one with limited fans in attendance.

I think there's a possibility that Blackpool Combat Club is something that sounds far cooler to Americans, than it does to British people. Because, like, I've been to Blackpool. It's not really a tough person town, it's a Holiday resort. It's a party town. The main form of fighting there is of the "Two Drunk guys lurch at each other/ two drunk women pull each other's hair" type.

Regal in WCW was billed as learning in the "pits of Blackpool", so it comes from there.

Regal's not even from Blackpool, so its a strange billing - wonder what the history behind that was. There are way, way more provincial UK towns w/ reputation for hardness/violence; maybe, as said above, it was chosen simply because of the way it aesthetically sounds off the tongue.
