Dynamite - 2/2/22

Recommended Posts

haven't read this thread yet, but i just watched Dynamite and feel compelled to comment.

jesus, that Brandi segment was just fucking awful.

Malakai Black and Brody King being announced as "Kings of the Black Throne" while their chyron called them the "Knights" was funny.

JR really likes Boardwalk Empire, doesn't he? He mentioned it like 3 times. He just sounded tired tonight.

CM Punk/MJF wasn't very good IMO. dragged in spots. went WAY too long for the style/speed they were wrestling. crowd loved it, but i just never got into it.

I thought it was more of a great segment, but not a great match.  I think it was like a book that told a good story and ended exactly as it should have, but needed another couple weeks of editing and rewrites to really be considered a great book.  It was way too long and as much as I see the potential in MJF, he's not great in the ring.  He's not bad, but in a match this long he's going to have issues keeping everything together.  Punk is someone who is playing with house money, losing this match does nothing to diminish him.  MJF winning this match means a whole hell of a lot.  I think the feud has been really well done and I want to see where it goes from here.

Ah shit, I forgot to mention that next week's Dynamite takes place in the building where WWF held Manias 4 & 5!  That's crazy and I figured the building would have been condemned by now.

In my weekly reminder that I am old...I saw those two shows on closed circuit.

Shouts out to @Dolfan in NYC...at least a certain malignant orange blob won't be at ringside for these.

I think part of the reason is Atlantic City doesn't have a proper standalone arena especially one that size. Etess Arena (at Hard Rock) and Ovation Hall (at Ocean Casino Resort fka Revel Casino) are much smaller. Even though clearly, most entertainment entities would have an easier time selling those places out rather than a 10,000 seater. I mean WWE was still doing shows at Boardwalk Hall up until about 2016. UFC did a show there in 2018.

That said, to clear this up for those who were confused like myself, the actual Trump Plaza and Boardwalk Hall are two places (close together but two separate places). The actual Trump Plaza casino was closed in 2014 and just imploded the previous February. Most of the other old Trump related casino venues from the heyday are long gone. However, the Boardwalk Hall played host to WrestleMania in '88 and '89 and the casino served as a sponsor so they billed those shows as emanating from the "Trump Plaza". I don't think Trump ever owned the actual arena because the state or city actually owns it. He likely had some type of naming rights deal. Once Las Vegas got MGM Grand in 1994 and the Mandalay Bay Events Center, didn't have to do shows in makeshift arenas in and around casinos, and more importantly big time boxing start going back to MSG, I think that partnership was pretty much over and Trump moved to something else.

I am finally able to watch Dynamite. I am pretty behind.

The Mox/Bryan story has a really good beginning. A fun feud tease with a good plot twist.

The Kings of the Black Throne vs Pac/Penta match was just not for me. I hate the second for the Death Triangle and his black gloves. The match itself was fine, save for this ref who does enforce tag rules, which I hate.

I think Dan Lambert is a great heel. But I could care less about Brandi. Snooze button.

I really liked a lot of the Ruby Soho versus Nyla match. Ruby is not the best natural athlete. But she is arguably the most natural actress/actor in pro wrestling. She is so good at how she reacts to everything and is a fantastic seller. She is perfect for someone like Nyla. I hated the end though. They just went a little too much. It would have been great if Vicki’s interference led directly to the finish as opposed to the rough sequence with the top rope stuff.

Fun angle with the Cowboy and Murderhawk to set up the match.

The Jericho slow-burn heel turn getting into a feud with Eddie is pretty good. Eddie Kingston needs to get the world title before it is too late.

I have tuned out the Punk/MJF mic-work segments. But I do like this feud a lot of the young prick against the living legend. CM Punk in Chicago is the best crowd reaction possibly ever. The Punk punching MJF slingshot stuff was such great 80s stuff. I love everything about this match. It feels like some Tully Blanchard defending the TV title against Ron Garvin or something like that.

The first match I remember watching as a child was when Randy Savage beat Tito Santana for the IC Title. Savage win with some kind of foreign weapon usage. I was hooked from life from there.

A few years ago, there was an incredible and legendary regular season basketball game between Golden State and Oklahoma City. In terms of significance, there was not much. It was a regular season game between two excellent teams. But the incredible ending and atmosphere and everything made it a perfect first basketball game for a kid to watch.

This is not the best match of all-time. But it’s an awesome match with a great story and two very clear characters. It builds to the dramatic spots perfectly. MJF is a great heel and knows how to make all of his selling and gestures play to the very back of the arena.

My son is too young to get into wrestling yet. But, man, there is a six or seven year old kid out there who watched Dynamite and this match and is going to be posting on message boards about this match a few decades later.

Wait - did you mean to say "doesn't"? Or are you the guy the other AEW refs are playing to?

Nice!  I can still see the finishing sequence in my mind.  Savage pulls out a foreign object (later referred to by Gorilla as a "piece of cold, rolled steel") and swings at Tito.  Tito ducks and counters into a back suplex.  Savage punches him with the gimmick on the way down and gets the pin.

And what do I see on my Twitter first thing this morning:
