Dynamite - 1/19/2022

Some random thoughts on tonight's show:

* Worst AEW crowd ever. Crowd was off all night. Reminded me of Bizarro World Toronto. Crowd sounded low energy and grumpy, like they just got out of bed. On for some stuff, totally random for others. Sounded like they had a sugar run crash and were forced to go onto a football field for a playoff game. Crowd irked me from the opening segment with that dude heckling Moxley and they were on my bad side all night. Also, f-u to that dude heckling Moxley.

* I think Serena Deeb's heel turn is perfect for her and has really livened things up. Finish to that match was perfect. She's really got an edge she was lacking now. I say keep running with her just wrecking women for a while.

* Mixed tag match was fun action for the most part.

* Cody's rambling, meandering promo was awful. Why the hell is he talking about all this insider BS like turning heel? It's f'n dumb. So many dumb, stupid spots that went nowhere. It sounded like he was speaking in incoherent gibberish. Like a bad Vince Russo promo. Insider terms and lots of nonsense. Yet another reason why Cody is US Agent/Poochie. If this is Cody's heel turn, he's botching even that. Cody's now a terrible babyface and a terrible heel.

* I do think Acclaimed are a great act, but I think they are just missing those key signature couple wins. Honestly, I would've had them go over Sting and Darby tonight. At the very least, I think beatdown of Sting and Darby early was good.

Also Punk going at Mox's issues, after his short run with Kingston, would be too good a chance to miss.
"I'm straight edge and that means I'm better than you".
Then give me Punk/Bryan vs Mox/Kingston.

Yeah...That's the good shit!!

No.

I'll have more to say later, but this was one of the worst crowds they've had. You had the really shitty fan at the start, the absolute worst signs ever on the TV side that held them up almost all night that were just dumb inside jokes, being dead silent at times, being really loud at other random times, etc. Maybe not worst crowd... Just the weirdest.

I think a lot of those signs were from some guys from an Arsenal podcast,so I got a chuckle out of them the first time but grew old quickly. Was fun seeing Arsenal twitter talking AEW Dynamite this morning though.

Loved seeing Mox look so good, I'm a recovering gambling addict (19 months sober) so have nothing but respect and love for people handling addiction issues and it's genuinely heartwarming to see it acknowledged and not swept under the rug.

As much as Pillman does nothing for me,it was good to see his multiple flubs from previous Black match called back. Kings of the Black Throne look great to me, just an incredibly interesting aesthetic.

AEW continue to run multiple stories and weave them together in interesting ways (sting & Darby vs acclaimed with Andrade & now Hardy in the wings as an example). It may not always work flawlessly but I appreciate you depth it brings to the product. Everything happening in a vacuum is no fun.

I don't know what to make of that Cody promo. He was just all over the place and I couldn't tell if he was baiting the fans, stroking his ego, trying to go full smark asshole, or what.

I guess the idea was, once he puts a ladder in the ring, everyone knows he's challenging Sammy to a ladder match. So he subverts expectations by talking about anything and everything but that, and the joke is that this massive ladder is sitting there all the while like the elephant in the room. Then he drops in the challenge real quick at the end.

Not the biggest Mox fan but I was ready to run through a fucking wall after his promo. Great stuff, hope we get G1 Moxley again this year. I also enjoyed Cody’s weird rambling promo.

Sting having this much fun and getting to do so much is the biggest FU to Vince and co. that he can ask for and I’m here for every second of it.

It's so good to LOVE pro wrestling again.

this is a sentiment I've been discussing with my buddy.  We've been wrestling fans/best friends for our entire lives, and our fandom was in a lull until AEW.  I'm not blind to the fact that there are issues in AEW, but goddamn it's fun to jsut watch it.  I'm back to actually making sure i watch wrestling programming live weekly for the first time in over a decade because of AEW and it's incredible.

Hopefully the piece of shit who heckled Jon Moxley was thrown out and won't be allowed to attend any more AEW events.

I immediately thought of the scene in Casino where they bring the cheaters into the backroom, lol.  Just have that dude brought into a room with Mox.

It's not really dumb although it was rather incoherent.  It just reminded me of the shit that fathers regardless of race, creed, or natural origin have done since time immemorial when they get into discussions that might turn into arguments and then suddenly they are all like "Before you say another word, let me remind you whose fucking house you're in right now."

It was a weird shoot moment where Cody was addressing the meta of crowds booing him (which he totally shouldn't have done) by reminding people of his role with the company and how hard he's worked to get AEW off of the ground, but it's hard to empathize with that guy in the basketball game that keeps missing shots but constantly reminds you that the reason there is a game is because it's his basketball.

People having heat with him over his self booking doesn't mean that they're also being ungrateful.

Can someone explain to me, point by point (or as much as possible), what Cody's promo was about? I understand that AEW rewards smart fans and has opened "the forbidden door" but it kind of alienates newer people like myself who are coming back into the fold for the first time in years. If I wanted rambling shooty stuff, I would listen to podcasts.

Forbidden Door is just working with other organizations you're supposed to pretend don't exist.

That was the only part I understood since it's been mentioned here the last couple of weeks!

Your explanation above my post summed it up pretty well and maybe also why I reacted so negatively to it.

Oh, you were talking about Cody's "Whose House Is This?" meta stuff.

One must throw all established laws of AEW nature out the window during a Cody segment. The Codyverse has its own internal logic.

Paraphrasing here but the best part of Cody’s promo was the line that he “got to do all the stuff punk said he would do (in 2011)” but it would’ve been ten times better if a) he was in a feud with punk b) it was any way relevant at all other than to big himself up.

Yeah, but Cody said those things in a promo that almost sounded like a shoot.

If I were Punk I wouldn't have been cool with that.  Those were close to being fighting words.  That little ding at Brody King using Brody as his ring name was also kinda suspect and it also missed the point.  Brody King didn't steal his name from Brodie Lee.  Brody King chose his ring name to honor Bruiser Brody.

so next week.. which heel gets the cheap line pointing out the fact that it makes no sense to call a show in Cleveland in January by the name "Beach Break"?

(apologies if I missed that line already)

Yeah, it's 15 degrees outside right now!

Kind of a “meh” show for me overall.  Like some have said already.  There was something off about this show.

Glad to see Mox is back to drink blood.  I recommend being at ringside for the Cole/Orange lights out match.  I expect that Britt might blade during that match.  For reasons.  Fuck that crotch sniffer in the crowd.

It was a strangely small venue.  But I kinda like that for a weekly show so that the bigger shows stand out.

PAC with the eye bandages… visually is reminding me of something I can’t quite place yet.

That was a good questionable injury bump by Darby to get him out of the way for a bit.  Weird that I was less concerned for STING jumping off the stage than I was taking a drop kick into a flat back bump. The Acclaimed still have a ways to go.  But it is definitely on its way.

Whenever that JE/Ass Boys match happens… fast forward.  I’m leaning the same way on Archer.

I still love you AEW.
