Well, fuck.  That Danhausen curtain jerker was the best I've ever seen him look in a match.  Ring time is paying off.

That trios match just screamed "let's get three little dudes for the Embassy dudes to throw around the ring like rag dolls" and Waves / Curls are not small guys.  Fuego had the hope spot offense of a man that has signed a contract and is getting a regular paycheck.  Waves / Curls, not so much.

Jaelyn Brandon is a small guy. Traevon Jordan, not so much. He's a shoot 6'3".

Their run in the Beyond Wrestling Eliminator Cup was really good. They set up a match formula where little Jaelyn would be the face in peril, and then big Trae would get the hot tag, run wild and wreck the other team. Then they ran into TME, who are both 6'7", and Trae worked face in peril...

Squashes are awesome. Joey Janela is wrong. That's all I have to say this morning.

So, I'm of two minds about this.

Pros: we had an amazing time at this taping. It had a very interesting, almost house show feel combined with what I'd imagine it must've been like to go to a WWF taping in the early '90s. You'll see big names squashing some young ones, and then you get Bret for Coliseum Video on top (or in this case, Mox vs Daddy Magic for Rampage). Beautiful pro-wrestling, for people who love pro-wrestling. (By the way: glad to see you all know now that I wasn't kidding about Fenix/AR Fox!!) Bumped into a bunch of the crew afterwards just walking around the hotel/casino doing our thing, and everyone could have not been more lovely (I'll specifically shout out Sonny Kiss, Dante Martin, and Will Hobbs, who might be the most gracious man I've ever met in wrestling, all due respect to the late Bossman).

Cons: This building was... not full. If you go back and watch this, you'll hear a guy to the far right of the hard cam attempt a CM Punk chant during Diamante/Toni - when he is immediately (rightfully) booed, I'm actually able to pick out my own voice. It was *cavernous* at times to the point of near-guilt: "Why didn't I open those All Elite-Fleet emails?! I COULD'VE SPREAD THE WORD!!" I'm hoping/envisioning that things will normalize moving forward once ROH has dedicated TV. A combination ROH Taping/Live Rampage might be an easier ticket to sell than one hour of Rampage and THREE episodes of Dark. I understand the argument of wanting to retrain the audience into attending/watching these, and trying to reintroduce the art of the squash - many of you know the obscene amount of hours I've spent watching WCW weekend TV - but Joey's statement along with the discourse about it has me at least examining the idea that these tapings are a bit uh, structurally antiquated let's say. And hey, maybe I'm talking out of my ass - they might just stay the course and start booking smaller buildings, which is perfectly fine by me too, I'll be there either way.

Traevon Jordan was as tall as the three men on the other team were wide.  Compared to them, he was a small dude.

I don't have very many pics that clearly show the crowd, but I found one I took to text a friend about these really good (and really dangerous) canned mai tais, and just figured I'd throw it up so you guys understand I am not exaggerating the attendance situation to be a doomsayer or trying to make a shitty bad-faith Twitter argument

The actual issue is having live Rampages that aren't treated like a big deal. It's one thing if you have Rampage a definite B show but it's taped after a stacked Dynamite so people can choose to stay or not. It's one thing if there are 5-7 Elevation matches taped beforehand where people can choose whether not to go early to see. The Rampage tapings where you get a very secondary show after hours of webshow tapings is an issue. I'm not arguing that one way or another.

I'm also not someone attending these shows. I'm someone watching them on my terms from home. And I thoroughly enjoy them.

I'm arguing that the notion of squashes not helping anyone and not being entertaining is ridiculous.

Athena's about to get a heel turn/big push because of a competive squash. Totally revitalized her AEW run. I want Satnam Singh to get squash match wins in front of a crowd. I want a crowd to get to see Danhausen and Best Friends even if they can't be booked into a 2 hour Dynamite or a 1 hour Rampage. People love seeing Eddie Kingston and Ortiz absolutely crush people. You can have some competitive matches. You can have some squashes. You can have some stuff in the middle. You can try out indy talent. You can run some lower card angles. You can heat people up to prepare them for being on TV again.

The issue is not at all squash matches. The issue is Janela's lack of imagination, maybe. The issue is that the company doesn't do a better job highlighting what comes out of the webshows. And yes, the issue is not better balancing things during the rising numbers of live Rampages.

I haven't read Janela's thing yet, and I agree with most of Matt's take, but I do dislike how the AEW web show matches usually default to squash length, even when the pairing would justify something with more meat to it.

Fenix vs AR Fox was a perfect example. Well formed little match with some cool spots, but why was it about five minutes long? Part of AEW's appeal is that it has some level of continuity with wrestling as a whole, so why not present AR Fox as a big indie name, and have the 15 minute, competitive match those guys could easily headline an indie show with?

Do the squash matches by all means, but each show should have at least one closely fought back and forth that breaks the 10 minute mark. Also, at least a handful where the outcome is in doubt, though that goes for AEW as a whole.

The funny thing is they re-ran the episode of The Wrestlers about EVOLVE the other day and there was AR Fox. That came out I want to say a year or two before AEW? And they were hanging off the dude's nuts, yet he is just now getting a five minute squash?

I've never really seen the guy work but it's an interesting coincidence.

He's very fond of landing right on his head quite a lot. And he's one of those wrestlers who whenever he walks into a room, he looks for something really high in the air to jump off or fall off (or be thrown off).

Sorry I'm late!  Had to drive one of my children to see another of my children perform her noise thingy.  It's Abadon!  It's Amy Rose!  It's over!  It's Dalton Caste and the Boys against the Trustbusters!  It's Slim J, Ari Daivari and Jeeves!  They have four auxillary Boys!  Brandon is our babyface to be beaten upon.  Slim J SHINES UP the Boys!  Slim J does a kamikaze flying spinning kick to Bret's head!  Jeeves K is the first to be STEINERIZED by Castle and then Slim J takes a MODIFIED EXPLOIDER!  Then the Boys go flying!  Parker Boudreax INJECTS himself to save Jeeves K from the Bang-A-Rang.  NICE KAORU EXCALIBER by Jeeves FOR TWO!  Castle finally PROCURES the Bang-A-Rang on Jeeves K and he is in synch with the twirling Boys!  They ARE STILL the Six Man Champs!  HOLY SHIT, ATHENA IS FUCKING AWESOME.  SO FUCKING GREAT! She Nasty Boyz Abby Jane after giving Abby Jane a giant wad of offense.  Man, she beats the fuck out of Abby Jane.  ATHENA IS SHIBATA!  ATHENA! ATHENA! ATHENA!  Abby Jane looked great in this.  Ethan Page is great as Private Party's angry stepdad.  Tay and Sammy are HEAT MACHINES!  Trish Adora will lay it in!  Adora doesn't get as much in as Abby Jane but Adora doesn't take as assbeating like Abby Jane.  Hey!  It's Eli Isom!  He was getting a push at the tail end of ROH before it ROSE FROM THE ASHES!  Dante Martin is on a roll.  Isom is fun on the mat.  Martin MIRRORS Isom's roll-ups!  That was awesome.  This match is great in a Mid-Atlantic studio match way. Isom gets in a lot of stuff and then Martin starts his crazy athletic stuff.  THEN Isom gets another comeback!  Isom looks fucking great in this.  Martin hits a crazy Corkscrew Springboard Plancha to the floor and then hits his finisher.  That was GREAT.  I forgot that Isom was developing into something good.  Hey!  It's Rhett Titus and Cheeseburger!  Awesome!  Biggy Shotty Lee is EVIL!  YES!  It's Cole Karter!  He's mixed up with Jeff Jarratt and Sanjay Dutt and the guys!  QT is the best HEAT MACHINE in AEW!  Logan LaRoux is wearing a Bob Spark Plug Holly outfit.  Cheeseburger is our babyface who will be beaten to death.  Big Shotty is WAY better as a heel.  Rhett Titus is a fun Robert Gibson.  QT is fucking AWESOME selling CB's SHOTAY like DEATH!  QT hits the DOUBLE Diamond Cutter after the TRIPLE CUTTER!  QT is so fucking great!  QT GRABS THE STICK!  EVERYBODY IS A PIECE OF CRAP!  This episode is pretty squashless.  Except for when it RULES.  ATHENA.  Eddie Kingston And Ortiz beat the fudge out of some dudes.  I PRAY that Kingston and Kitamiya happens after Kitamiya said on Twitter that Kingston was his dream match.  Eddie said, "I want to fight!"  Ortiz is channeling Rick Rude again and we all party and freak out.  Joe Keys I VAGUELY remember from ROH. Eddie and Ortiz have a Rick Rude-off postmatch.  It's Kip Sabian versus Alex Reynolds!  Sabian does some neat stuff to combat the vanillaness of Reynolds, who is great in tags, six mans and eight mans but is a little dull on his own.  Ah, he looks good on offense,  Nice Tiger Driver by Reynolds.  I dunno, if Reynolds was in New Japan, he'd be the 12th member of the Bullet Club.  If he were in IMPACT!, he would join Alan Angels in Violent By Design. Kip Sabian wins by reversing a Pinning Predicament!  That was good.  It's our main event!  Butcher and the Blade and Angelico!  It's Rocky Romero, the busiest man in wrestling!  It's Chuck and Trent!  It's Danhausen!  It's the Bunny!  There are many moving pieces to this match.  Chuck beats Angelico on the mat!  The Blade takes Roppongi Vice's Motor City Machine Guns-esque offense.  Angelico applies the coolest fucking submission in Negro Navarro's arsenal.  THAT was fucking awesome.  Rocky and the Butcher did SOMETHING to make them cut to Trent for an extended time.  Trent make the hot tag and TRIPLE KNEE to the Butcher!  The Bunny BASHES Trent's balls to outer space!  FOR TWO!  Danhausen BASHES the Blade's balls to outer space!  Trent takes advantage and CRUSHES the Blade and gets the pin!  That was awesome if just for the fucked submission Angelico whipped out.   ATHENA IS MOTHERFUCKING AWESOME.
