(BP) Posted July 22, 2022 Share Posted July 22, 2022 (edited) I always figured the consensus was that El Mariachi was a better film, but Desperado was an English language studio release that played on cable a ton so it was bound to be more mainstream. It’s kind of in the same brand identity quagmire that Mad Max and The Road Warrior went through for a time. I watched the hell out of the two pack special edition DVD set I got circa 2000. Actually, I may be misremembering relevant parts of conversations. It may have been more along the lines of, "Yeah, the first one sucked because a kid wrote it, but once he actually grew up and wrote like an adult, the books got better, too, so people who didn't stick with them never found that out." From Dusk Til Dawn was the best ever use of George Clooney. Seth Gecko may be one of the most quotable movie characters in anything committed to film. "Psychos do not explode when sunlight hits 'em. The Gecko Bros. need to show up in one of the Rodriguez (or Tarantino) pictures at some point, even as just walk-ons. All I can remember of Once Upon A Time In Mexico is Johnny Depp's fake arm really, and not liking it as much as Desperado or Dusk. Depp's monologue on maintaining Mexico's geopolitical balance is brilliant. It's pretty awesome that Depp improvised most of his dialogue in order to keep it clean. Once Upon a Time in Mexico was not on the level of Desperado or From Dusk Til Dawn, but there was more to like than there was not to like about the movie. I loved From Dusk Til Dawn but it's funny, I've met at least two people in my life who legit did not know what the movie was about and hated it for that reason. Seriously, they thought they were watching an action/crime thriller and then the movie took an unexpected right turn into vampire country and they just couldn't deal. The best part of the movie is when the survivors are confronted with the reality that they are fighting vampires and abandon all denial. Seth's survival instinct is almost primal. He does not let disbelief stand in the way of staying alive. He accepts the fact that his enemies are supernatural and his thoughts immediately turn to coming up with the best methods to kill them.
