Dolfan in NYC Posted January 1, 2022 Posted January 1, 2022 As noted at the end of the last thread, Betty White passed away at the age of 99. A true legend. 3
Elsalvajeloco Posted January 2, 2022 Posted January 2, 2022 I would also recommend Thomasine & Bushrod with the amazing Vonetta McGee. 1
Ace Posted January 2, 2022 Posted January 2, 2022 Random trivia: Betty White was the last surviving member of not only the Golden Girls, but the Mary Tyler Moore show as well.

I totally forgot that he penned the scripts for the blaxplotation classics, Cleopatra Jones and Cleopatra Jones and the Casino of Gold. Thomasine & Bushrod is also really good. I lost my shit when he appeared in How To Be A Player as Uncle Fred. As a Hamptonian, I can forgive him for being a Bison. RIP to the OG Mack. Edited January 2, 2022 by J.T. 1
Zimbra Posted January 6, 2022 Posted January 6, 2022 Peter Bogdanovich, director of The Last Picture Show and Paper Moon, has passed away at age 82. 1
J.T. Posted January 6, 2022 Posted January 6, 2022 Possibly has one of the best car chases in any movie ever filmed, as well as being a brilliant screwball comedy. RIP Peter Bogdanovich 1
(BP) Posted January 6, 2022 Posted January 6, 2022 If you haven’t seen Bogdonavich’s first feature Targets it’s worth a watch. Way ahead of it’s time. 2 1
Matt D Posted January 6, 2022 Posted January 6, 2022 TCM did a very easy to listen podcast season on Bogdonavich a little while back. 2
Curt McGirt Posted January 7, 2022 Posted January 7, 2022 (edited) Targets is fucking incredible. And he was quite the actor on The Sopranos. The Last Picture Show was just on TCM and I recorded it, so I guess I'm obliged to watch it now for sure. On top of that, he directed Mask and that killer Buster Keaton documentary? Wow. RIP EDIT: I will suggest you look up the Dorothy Stratton case on your own and make your own decisions about how he reacted. It's... complicated. Edited January 7, 2022 by Curt McGirt
J.T. Posted January 7, 2022 Posted January 7, 2022 (edited) There are no words for how sad I am right now. Sir Poitier's death is especially hard on me since today is also my late father's birthday. It is important for people to see themselves represented on screen and Sidney Poitier showed boys like me that we could grow up to be intelligent, strong, and dignified black men. RIP to a legend of stage and screen and a huge influence on my development as human being. Edited January 9, 2022 by J.T. 7
RIPPA Posted January 7, 2022 Posted January 7, 2022 This is gonna be a weird statement but fondest memory of Sidney Poitier was him and Robert Redford being in Sneakers There is no reason that movie should be as much fun as it is besides both of them giving max effort 7
RIPPA Posted January 7, 2022 Posted January 7, 2022 The news made me look and I was right - TCM is showing The Defiant Ones on MLK 1

River Phoenix, Sir Ben, Mary McDonnell... I swear to god, every time I travelled internationally, the line living rent-free in my head for 30 years running "I would like to... hear you say the word... passport." Back to the point at hand.... Sidney Poitier fucking ruled. There is no overstating how important a movie Look Who's Coming To Dinner is. Look at his career, jesus christ almighty, that man had what's arguably the best career anyone has ever had in the movie business. And even more importantly, his work as a civil rights advocate. Man oh man... this one hurts. Rest in power. 3 1
hammerva Posted January 10, 2022 Posted January 10, 2022 Hey just did a show last night according to TMZ. So it doesn't sound like he was sick. Although more and more people are hiding things so who knows.
Dolfan in NYC Posted January 10, 2022 Author Posted January 10, 2022 If you look at his Twitter he had concert dates through the summer, so it definitely seems like a sudden/unexpected thing. Poor guy.
colonial Posted January 10, 2022 Posted January 10, 2022 As a single father who became one when my child was in the first grade, I've realized that Bob Saget was one of the few representatives of single dads on TV when he did "Full House." I'll never be the super clean freak that Danny Tanner was, but I think I've managed to keep the ship afloat. I remember reading an article about Saget's love-hate relationship with the FH franchise -- he never felt comfortable with being the squeaky-clean "America's Dad" given his blue style of comedy, but he accepted being a role model for single dads as a badge of honor.
Gonzo Posted January 10, 2022 Posted January 10, 2022 (edited) As someone who grew up watching Full House, this stinks. Particularly given that it looks like he had comedy dates scheduled out for at least a few months. RIP, Danny Tanner. Edited January 10, 2022 by Gonzo
odessasteps Posted January 10, 2022 Posted January 10, 2022 That's interesting, as the single dad with kid(s) was seemingly a TV staple for decades. I'm sure it's probably a TV trope, since it allowed you to have a family sitcom where the dad could Date and have attractive guest stars too
colonial Posted January 10, 2022 Posted January 10, 2022 One other add ... I have vague memories of Bob Saget briefly serving as commissioner of CHIKARA. How in the world did this come about? It came off like a Cameo call years before they existed. I know Saget had ties to the area ... did he know someone with the company?
