2022 - IN MEMORIAM - MOVIES & TV

The FX are dated by today's standards, but that scene produced an audible gasp from my mom and I when we watched it on HBO one Saturday night in the early 80's.   I can only imagine the horrified audience in the crowd watching this on opening weekend.

It's kinda obvious that the movies in the Final Destination franchise all owe their existence to the films in the Omen trilogy, especially Omen II where the super gory rando supernatural murder formula really hit its stride.

Sorvino used to frequent the store I worked at over ten years ago. He looked pretty frail then. He always had a 6’6 meathead as his driver/escort, and that dissuaded my friends and I from approaching him and trying to get him to sign a DVD of See Spot Run.

When I was in college one weekend, I gathered with a few friends to watch and talk movies. Someone asked the question to name one or two actors that always made a film or TV show better, regardless of quality, just because they were in it. The two names I mentioned were Jerry Orbach and Paul Sorvino. Both were rarely the lead, but they commanded your attention when they appeared on screen. You wanted to see what they did next or what would happen to them.

I saw "The Firm" in a sold-out movie theater in 1993. When Sorvino popped up on screen for the first time, the audience went crazy. One guy behind me yelled "Sh*t's going to get real really soon" 3-4 times. But by the time the filmed ended and ...

Spoiler

Sorvino's character agrees to work with Tom Cruise's lawyer character

... the audience pretty much turned on the movie and started throwing popcorn boxes and soda cups at the screen. Same guy behind me yelled something to the extent of "Why didn't (Sorvino) kill anybody? This is bull!"

Ok a few thoughts...

David Warner was in so many good to great movies. I don't care how cheap Quest of the Delta Knights is, it was part of childhood before MST3K did it. Also Yime After Time is an underrated gem@

Paul Sorvino is just one of those actors who has always been around. His uncredited cameo in The Firm is one of those "oh fuck, its Paul Sorvino! These must the mob guys" moments that I love to death.

Tony Dow's cameo in Kentuvk Fried Movie slays me every time

RIP Tony Dow (Wally from Leave It To Beaver)

My most tangential and meaningless celebrity connection is that Tony Dow was my mom's landlord when she first moved to LA so I met him a couple of times.  Seemed nice enough, but apparently not great about taking care of maintenance issues.

Reading his obituary it seems like he appeared in practically every well loved British production ever - The Wombles, Jackanory, The Railway Children, Doctor Who, Carry On films, and then cameos in Coronation Street, Worzel Gummidge, Fawlty Towers, The Avengers, Last of the Summer Wine. Plus a lengthy career on TV, film and stage in addition to that.

Also learned where Right Said Fred got their name from (a novelty song recorded by him in the 60s) and that, trivia question, Right Said Fred's UK #1 hit isn't the obvious one (Deeply Dippy; I'm Too Sexy only made it to #2)

Also, Hitchcock (Frenzy) and Bond (Casino Royale, as I think the driver who takes Mata to Berlin).

Other than BB King, she was the most famous person from my hometown. RIP.

She was awesome as the dorm mom from A Different World.  I knew someone like her character, Lettie, when I went to Hampton.  Full of encouragement.  Tough but fair.  Unwilling to allow you to bullshit your way through life.  You need positive and brutally honest people like that in your formative years and A Different World and Mary Alice showed the importance of that fact.

RIP

Another one of my African-American female role models is gone in a matter of days.

Uhura wasn't just a red skirt, she was the fucking Communications Officer.  Always put respect on her name.

RIP.
