Matt D
I could write a million words about Flair. I'm sure I've written thousands. We all have basically. He's on the outside looking in now due to the cumulative sins of a lifetime. He's like a broken record that reveres, above all else, those who show him respect. He's 73 this month. I've seen those who put him on a pedestal ten years ago call him exposed now (and not in the way he so thoroughly enjoyed and felt entitled to). Maybe he's got one chapter left where the cards fall just right for him, but I just don't see it. More likely, he'll die someday and then the problem of Richard Morgan Fliehr will no longer be in the way of most people's appreciation of their memories and the footage of Ric Flair. Personally, hes a guy who footage hurt as much as helped and came out of the 80s sets probably worse than he came in, but we're a subgroup of a subgroup of a subgroup. The footage that would have really helped him is from ~80 and there's precious little of that to go around.

I'd see something and think, "Oh, maybe he is overrated." Then, I'd see something else where I'd think, "Oh no. He really is that good!" I guess maybe my takeaway was that he's not as consistently great as I thought. The highs are very high, but there are a lot of middles, too (not many lows, though, IMO). SirSmUgly
Jumping off from this weekend's Royal Rumble, in which Lashley looked like garbage who could only win the gold through outside interference, it still wasn't as bad as Slaughter/Warrior in 1991. Most of the issue with WM VII being a bomb are tied to the shitty exploitation of the Persian Gulf War, but at least some of it has to go to Slaughter becoming champ by getting his ass whipped, squandering Savage and Sherri's first instance of interference and almost losing because he was a wily veteran who somehow had zero sense of ring positioning before Savage and Sherri saved his ass again. I think that by WM VII, "obvious coronation for Hulk Hogan" was not much of a sell and Slaughter as a transitional champ was doomed by this match. They needed a bloody brawl with a crazed Slaughter willing to go to depths to win, which would have at least sold him as a threat to beat Hogan two months later. Re: Flair, I'd love to see more roly-poly Flair from the '70s. but is the DVDVR/PWO line on him now any worse than it was five or ten years ago as a wrestler? I think he's a guy who is very good at his specific schtick in the ring, but who struggles big-time (and is quite mediocre) when that schtick isn't appropriate for the setting. That's still a fringe opinion, yes?

Slaughter should have never been the "Stan Stasiak" bridging the title reign of two popular babyfaces. The Royal Rumble should have been Earthquake beating Warrior after Savage and Sherri interfere, Sarge winning the Rumble by eliminating Hogan with Earthquake's help, a few weeks later on The Main Event the Hulkster beats Earthquake for the title, after the match Sarge, Sheiky Baby and Adnan attack Hogan and steal the belt.

Much better idea. Quake was so good at this point, too. He could have had a quick reign here and it would have fit perfectly.

Imagine booking, running and airing that, and your takeaway is "Let's bring back Shane!" And I actually *like* the guy.
SirSmUgly
One of my favorite things in pro wrestling is when workers try to get Okerlund to corpse during an interview. Watching SummerSlam '91, and Savage is on the WWF's 1-900 number while Okerlund cuts a promo. As Okerlund is talking, Savage puts the phone up to Okerlund's ear and says "Say somethin', Gene. Tell 'em something reaaaaaaal risque." It takes Okerlund a few seconds to process it because he's talking, but when he does, you can see him trying to keep from busting out until the camera is off. Savage had a look like he was going to bust out laughing too once the shot was over. It made me want to go online and watch those collections of guys cutting promos for different markets where they try to fuck with Okerlund to keep things interesting. Like not that he'd want to but he's free to drive for Uber or get a job at the post office right away or whatever lol. Concerts & signings are allowed (as long as it isn't a signing at a wrestling show). Just no wrestling stuff. I say combat sports because I would assume WWE would view someone showing up to hype a fight in UFC as breaking the no compete as well. I do think the language changed in the mid to late 00s. When Raven was fired in 2003 he opted out of the no compete to show up in early TNA and start a hot angle right away. He said no I don't want 90 extra days of pay, I want my freedom. I'm fairly sure you can't opt out of the non compete anymore. Because people like Matt Hardy were chomping at the bit to get in AEW. He certainly would have opted out of 90 days of pay to get his freedom if he was able to. So they have seemingly done away with the voluntary opt out. Ah, the Raven thing is what I was thinking of. I do remember him opting out of the 90 days of pay to be able to show up on tv. Thanks for jogging my memory.

At the very least, Saturday Night does mean that when the WWE inevitably runs long, they won't lose a portion of the audience purely because there's school tomorrow morning. Although some of the more Money Demo focused people might believe (or will be able to prove) that 18-49s are busier on Saturday Nights than Sunday Nights I've always figured that a "school night" is better for PPV. Saturday people are out and about. Sundays people at home in front of the TV cause they have work or school the next morning
