I'm gonna be honest, I don't think Cody should turn heel. The kids love him, he's a great brand representative and does seem to have genuine enjoyment for what he's doing. I actually really like and respect the guy - even if his promos can be cringe at times. He does seem to have good intentions at heart most of the time.

Where did all of this Cody hate come from anyways? Is it strictly because he's an EVP?

Let’s see…

1. Talented

2. Charismatic

3. Multi media crossover star

4. Beautiful Wife

5. Dashing

6. Has a Husky

…So much to list.

I mean it’s pretty obvious. Did you see the Internets reaction to the Twitch leak? It’s nothing but pure J E A L O U S Y!

I’m pretty much agnostic about Cody. I will say after seeing him up close that my body dysmorphia coupled with having my brain warped by worked heights and weights had me muttering, “Heh, I’m taller than this motherfucker.”

Sorry.

Though honestly, I thought the match was pretty good. It was just the aftermath that was... somewhat lacking.

It would have been interesting if they'd started Rhodes to the Top earlier so we could have got the backstage reactions to THAT fiasco. Forget the weigh-in, that would really have been something to see.

I just think he's stale as a character. Cody isn't really great at anything and that isn't enough as a top babyface. The top of the card is very crowded, and he's taking up space without really doing anything to set himself apart. In his current feud,  he's by far the easiest link. Black's character feels fresh,  we all loved Arn's promo,  but Cody could be replaced by any generic babyface.  It's fine,  but as Danielson, Punk,  and whoever else they bring in get established what is Cody doing to compete with them for space on the top of the card?  Jericho is dangerously close to being in the same boat for me, but he's also in more of a midcard feud, so it doesn't feel the same. Black feels like a main event heel already,  and Cody isn't pulling his weight.

Cody discourse is what it is but my main issue with him is that nothing he does in AEW has felt important in a while. If anything, he's under-pushed as he's spent the last year working mid card matches, doing the Shaq thing that we all see was more about launching Jade and being a gate-keeper for new talent.

His last truly important 'main event' singles match was putting over Darby last November. This Black feud seems to be going...somewhere but it's clearly more designed to make Black a bigger star, which is fine but Cody needs something interesting and well-developed to kind of rehab his own star-power.

The talk of Punk having nothing going on is hilarious. He has seven years of pent up demand built up and a clear need to get his feet back under him. Him working TV matches against guys who had zero profile a few months ago like Garcia gives him reps, lets people know he's in it for the right reasons and wants to contribute, gives people a taste, and doesn't burn anything big. He has room to take it slow and he's doing it the right way. Y'all are making it sound like this is Adam Page fumblefucking around with the Dark Order for months on end while they were running out of ideas and making the choice to do nothing of consequence on their television show until the crowds came back. It's not. They're cutting the right pace with Punk.

Speaking of Adam Page, I'm happy his never-ending melodrama with Omega is seemingly going to be taking a step towards some sort of resolution. Sucks that to get there anyone had to see two concepts that badly need to be retired, the Casino format and the ladder match. I've said it a thousand times, but ladder matches take place too frequently and thus don't register like they ought to. They're not worth the effort or the potential lasting injuries if they aren't going to be infrequent and special. Sit on it the concept for a couple years rather than throwing out a pointless one on TV with no build or using one to make Scorpio Sky the Face of the Revolution or whatever.

Sign me up with the people who've never had much time for Bobby Fish if Kyle isn't along for the ride.

I don't recall seeing much speculation of a second women's title. Seems everyone has had a decent understanding of what a non-priority their women's division has been. But if they're going to put in a better effort going forward, that'll be a nice change.

Decent episode overall. Excited for Punk vs Garcia. I really like some of the new guys getting excited about him and Dante Martin. The cream's slowly rising to the top.

Do you think part of this is because he's already declared he will never challenge for the AEW World Title - so people see his stories as nothing more than that? There is no "journey to the top of the mountain" with him (assuming he keeps that stipulation) and because of that, takes the investment out of the character.

Just like a college team who get's a post season ban. Why cheer on USC for 13 straight weeks when, even if they go undefeated, they still get nothing but a "good job!". Maybe not the best analogy, but the closest one I could think.

This isn't the problem. If he was doing the exact same thing, but the young guys were elevated in some way by the matches,  I'd have no complaint. Darby was fine,  he's an established guy,  great person for the first match. Hobbs is exactly where he was before after their mini feud.  They should have stretched it out for a couple weeks, let Hobbs get in some more mic time,  and made Hobbs feel like more than a bum of the week. Garcia didn't even show up on television to accept the challenge. He's just the guy Punk is going to beat on Friday. I have no issue with the guys he's wrestling,  I have an issue with the fact that the "feud" is a Punk love fest promo and a predictable win,  when they could be more. The goal should be good to great,  they are giving us just fine.

Cody is a better heel - but feels like he is stuck in face territory.  He is the irony - Miz is a heel on WWE while being a goofy, fun loving face dad on his reality show (scripted to the high heavens) while Cody feels like somewhat of a self center jerk on TV. His sister is getting the evil witch edits.

With the recent additions, Cody is stuck in neutral. Frankly if it was not his TV show he should go away for a while.

Jericho - he has done his role of giving AEW his credibility for the first 2 years, and well he needs to go away too. Jericho has a good sense of when to go away to keep the act fresh.

I agree with you for the most part and do hope this is it for "shine" up a younger talent of the week deal with Punk for the considerable future. The live crowds will take years to turn on his happy to be there stuff, and I really enjoy seeing him genuinely happy, but for the TV audience it is starting to run thin and it isn't really further establishing the young talent. Time for him to move onto somebody closer to his level and in a more sustained go of it. Thankfully, they've got a PPV to sell in about 5 weeks, so we should see that kick in soon. This is one of those balance issues that they generally do well with, particularly now that they're back on the road, but still needs some refinement. I'd rather them be more cautious with big matches than not though.

Also agree with John's take on ladder matches. One a year tops please.

I think it's a huge part of it. Or how he never challenged for the TNT title again. Cody was a victim of the early AEW trend of never really blowing off anything when his feuds needed it.

Apologies for the double-post, but what was the last AEW ladder match before this? Was it the one Scorpio Sky won? WWE did like 50 in the last two years but despite the eight other thousand gimmick matches AEW does I can only think of three ladder matches (Bucks vs Lucha, the Scorpion Sky win and last night).

They also did the one where Brian Cage debuted and earned his title shot. Which felt just as pointless. As with Scorpio Sky, not worth a pointless multi-person ladder match.

WWE doing 498 of them a year is why they don't register. So don't do them. At least AEW uses the cage right.

One a year should be grounds for cancellation. DO LESS.

Why does everyone hate Cody? Two reasons. The neck tattoo and the Snoop remix.

Someone on the last page said Daniel Garcia was almost 20 years younger than Billy the Fish. He's not. Fish is 44 or 45. Daniel Garcia is 22. He's freakishly good for his age and experience level. Also has a busy weekend; Garcia vs Alex Shelley tonight, vs CM Punk Friday (sort of), vs Minoru Suzuki also on Friday(?) and vs Davey Richards on Saturday.

I hope we get Fish vs Hook at some point.
