no wonder baseball's in this mess in the first place when the people in control of it have such little regard for or pride in it.

But Manfred said that they couldn't play the full 162 because of something something greedy players...

Also, gonna call it now, but The League saying that means they're gonna pull another Billy Mayes and sneak in another last minute deal killer then blame the PA.

  • RIPPA changed the title to MLB OFFSEASON (Maybe soon???)

Summary of random shit (not dealing with pure $$$ right now)

- Opening Day - April 7

- Freeze goes away upon ratification

- 9 inning DH and regular extra inning rules return

- Universal DH (since that was one of the few things they agreed upon awhile ago)

Passan recaps some of the other changes in that story

Of note...

Quote

Other elements of the deal include:

• A 45-day window for MLB to implement rules changes -- among them a pitch clock, ban on shifts and larger bases in the 2023 season

• The National League adopting the designated hitter

• A draft lottery implemented with the intent of discouraging tanking

• Draft-pick inducements to discourage service-time manipulation

• Limiting the number of times a player can be optioned to the minor leagues in one season

Be interesting to note what the 4 no votes didn't like (easy guess is either they wanted more $$$ or didn't like the international draft... or both)

Dissenting teams were NYM, NYY, HOU, STL

cool, 3 teams I'd boo in person (and the Mets)

Wonder how many of the Executive Committee would have voted yes if they were the difference between passing and failing. Voting no when the final result was 26-12 is a little safer than voting no to make the result 19-19 or 18-20

What is really amusing is the half of the executive subcommittee is made up of Yanks (Zack Britton and Gerrit Cole) and Mets (Max Scherzer and Francisco Lindor)

Now I will say it is entirely possible the committee members did a poll of their respective teams and got the sense that their team as a whole was opposed (like if a team is heavily Latino - maybe they were voting no due to the international draft)

More details

12 team playoff (no word on structure yet)

Draft lottery for Top 6 picks

Punishment if you finish "near the bottom" multiple years in a row

would think the committee had an idea of where the vote was going before they committed themselves

the NFLPA had a closer vote on their current CBA, which passed around this time 2 years ago (but was overshadowed by the whole COVID thing). So your situation where there's more MLBPA unity for a CBA than NFLPA unity.

Of course I post this and then details come out

No more single Wild Card game

Top Two Division winners get bye

Worst division winner and 3 wild card teams play Best of 3 Series (no ghost wins). It also appears they will alternate home field (not the higher seed gets all home games)

No more Game 163 tiebreaker games - MLB will move to tiebreakers like all other sports use (most likely head to head record)

No Reseeding after first round - so the #1 seed will always play the 4/5 winner even if the 6th seed wins

Any specifics on what this will look like?

Not yet - though at least Trade Rumors said they were doing a separate write up about (I'm guessing when someone reports more details)

Owners ratify.  1 WEEK WEEK HOT STOVE TIME BABY!

You have to wait 25 minutes - MLB says the lockout will be lifted at 7 PM EST
