ZSJ worked the first WWE Cruiserweight tournament, too.

I'd move heaven and earth to sign him, but that's just me.

I'd sign him and pay all the money to IDLES so that he can come out to "Mother". Give me all the promos about the calibre of vegan food in a given city and how he is fuelled by tofu and a hatred of the British Conservative party as he goes full bendy boi against Angelico and Garcia and Danielson.

I'm still hopeful for a Kingston TV title win at Arthur Ashe so I'd say do the tag on Rampage or something and then do a Suzuki/Mox rubber match at Ashe.

I was thinking move the TNT title onto Kingston then start re-heating Miro to be Hangman's first challenger when he takes the big belt

Off topic, but talk about the Baader-Meinhoff phenomenon: I literally just found out about IDLES 15 minutes ago. They did a song on the new Metallica black album covers box set thing, and I was like "Damn, this dude sounds like Danzig..."

My absolute favourite band of the last 10 years, love them dearly! My username is a riff on one of their songs. Saw Zack come out to Mother in Rev Pro (I think, certainly a UK indie) and the place came unglued as he went absolutely bonkers kicking the ropes and corners along to it. With a fan base like AEW that loves a sing along, I want this to happen so much!

PS, how is that Metallica covers project? I've only heard the Idles one so far.

It's an extremely varied selection, so it's kind of hit or miss, but I think that's probably dependent on ones taste. So far, I'm liking the Chats' version of Holier Than Thou the most I think

2 day old thoughts:

echoing many other thoughts, Excalibur was sorely missed.

Black/Dustin wasn't bad, but they didn't seem to have their timing down whatsoever. i had higher expectations. the missed kick worked only due to the exposed turnbuckle directly preceding it.

in the Elite segment, Brandon Cutler stooging for Marko Stunt was fantastic. seriously, go back and check it out if you're able. Marko hits the ring, beelines for him and jumps on him. Cutler holds his ground for a minute before doing the 'tree falling' spot.

the Hobbs/Dante match was easily my MOTN. yeah, you could see that Hobbs was out of it at the end. The pin was a bit awkward but i think it worked. I feel like Hobbs' snarl is note perfect. and when he busts out the confident smile, it doesn't get much better.

the MJF/Pillman Jr. stuff didn't really bother me, but i didn't really like it either. agreed with @christopher.annino that it really only works when the audience member/plant sells it. otherwise, like in this case, it just falls flat.

Hayter/Soho was a pretty decent match. The fact that Hayter took the L isn't an issue (of course Soho needs to win her first match after the Casino Battle Royal win), but it's more that she shouldn't have been programmed against Hayter so soon. Give Soho a win against a mid card woman unaffiliated with Britt. Let Britt's goon squad show up after the match or whatever to further the angle, and you can still have the same post-match brawl, but builds to next week's (or whenever) Soho-Hayter match. This match had no build and no stakes. Unrelated, the actual finish of the match seemed abrupt.

count me with @Greggulator. I know Minoru Suzuki by reputation. I've seen a couple of his matches (also his MMA bout with Jushin Liger), but feel like he wasn't explained enough to the audience. This is a man who, to my knowledge, has never been on US TV. Has he ever had a match in the US? or for an American wrestling company? Some more introduction would've been welcome.  And i don't even disagree with the "discover him on your own" mindset, but generally that comes AFTER the fact. like in a "Wow, that dude was awesome. who was he?" kind of way, not in a "who is this guy in tonight's main event" kind of way?  the comparison to a tv show, with "seasons", doesn't really jibe for me.
on that note, the match itself was fine. i wasn't so impressed that i'm going to look up Suzuki matches, or research him in any way after the show. he was cannon fodder for Moxley.

Respectfully I'm just asking what would have been good enough for you? How much of this show should have been dedicated to the history of him? He was shown in the opening recap. Every time the graphic was shown he was verbally put over. Punk took time out of his promo to put him over. His name plate had a written explanation of his history. Would a 30 second promo of Suzuki talking to the camera been a good enough introduction of him? I'm asking these questions because I don't understand the point of view and want to understand it. Suzuki is the simplest of all characters. A legitimate old man shooter badass. I don't know how much more of that could have even been conveyed. Like are you looking for a 3-4 minute mini documentary on his career or clips of previous matches?

For instance thinking back to any new additions that have debuted during battle royals / casino ladder matches none of them got any extra explanation. Brian Cage just showed up and they verbally conveyed his character. Ethan Page just showed up and they verbally conveyed his character. Lio Rush just showed up and they just verbally conveyed his character. Ruby Soho just showed up and they just verbally conveyed her character. Suzuki just showed up and they verbally conveyed his character. I just fail to see what's different about him versus everyone else. Because I don't remember anyone saying they needed more explanation on Lio Rush or Brian Cage.

On this point I agree. The match was a miss for me. Didn't think it was either guy's best work. But I don't think doing more of an explanation on Suzuki's past or motivations would have changed that. Which is kind of my whole point on this talking point. Gregg insinuated he would have been better vested if he knew more about Suzuki. And I don't think any of what was given to us would have been elevated by more dialogue or backstory.

i don't remember the opening recap. could be because i missed it or because if i thought it was just an All Out refresher, i skipped it on purpose. honestly not sure.

In my mind, a 30 second-1 minute promo video would be enough. Set it to clips of big moves/famous moments/vs. Moxley history, and with or without Suzuki narrating to the camera (subtitled, obviously. Unless that goes against his gimmick, which it might and i really don't know). My guess is that AEW didn't have access to any footage from Japan, which changes what you can do of course. The commentators and Punk putting him over DOES help quite a bit. i think it just goes back to the "show, don't tell" philosophy.

there's two main differences that i see:

first, these wrestlers debuting during a battle royal are, more often than not, surprises. You obviously can't hype them up with video packages and keep their debut a surprise.

secondly, we will learn about these roster additions as time goes on. Their past history, while important in the moment, will give way to the future as new history is created. A one-off appearance (or two-off, in this instance) needs built up to tell my WHY this is special. otherwise he's just another Japanese dude that will lose to Moxley. Although to be fair, i wouldn't object to better introductions across the board- look at what happened when Tommy End (or is it Malakai Black? only Excalibur knows!) debuted.

--i'm not saying the Suzuki debut was BAD or anything. just saying that a little video context would have gone a long way.

He seems to have wrestled on one episode of ROH's syndicated show and he's surely appeared on some of the New Japan stuff aired on AXS or wherever else.

They have access, but I'm unsure to what degree. As an example:

Just offering clarification. I have no horse in this race.

Yeah, I would assume New Japan would have no qualms about providing footage to hype Suzuki. And he's promoted his own shows, too, the footage of which he presumably owns, and could provide if AEW wanted.

But Suzuki isn't a flashy wrestler, and (if you don't know who he is) I'm not sure what him choking anonymous (to you) people out for thirty seconds would accomplish. The best possible characterization was done by Moxley at the PPV, honestly. His face, combined with the announcers' call, told you everything you needed to know. (I think what they did was fine, and a short video/promo would have been fine.) Most fiction benefits from less exposition.

Once, long ago, someone I know who knows nothing about Wrestling and never watches it, found herself in a room where Smackdown was on. And it was the episode in like '03 where Scott Steiner was re-debuting in WWE, so they kept saying "Coming up later, SCOTT STEINER is going to be here!". They never showed any footage of him or owt, they just spoke about what a big deal it was that he was there. She left the house before he actually appeared on the show.

But basically ever since then, she's been under the impression the Scott Steiner is the biggest star in Wrestling.

Random little thing I love in AEW: Brandon Cutler's ability to emote with his spray bottle. His flamboyant long and waving spray coming down the ramp, his quick burst desperation spray as Kenny was trapped in the LeBell lock, and his sad scared little sprays when he was trapped by the babyfaces. All-time great stooge work that deserves recognition.

Speaking of Suzuki-Gun, how long until AEW can make a move for Zack Sabre Jr? Dude is wasting prime years of his career shackled to a dog turd in New Japan and is stale as hell there. A move back to the States would be good for him and be another big get who isn't an ex-WWE guy.

I think ZSJ is gonna be a NJPW lifer.  While I think Jay and Finlay will jump- I think Juice, Gabe Kidd, ZSJ, and Cobb , and probably Ospreay are going to want to stay in NJPW.

ZSJ's style might not work well in AEW, though he'd get over with promos.

Also Zack is doing fine for himself, I wouldn't be surprised if he's in the block final or wins his G1 block, and Dangerous Tekkers is the best tag team out there right now, better than anyone in AEW.

I am the resident Taichi mark around here but come on.

Yes, I've became a big fan of the Tekkers also (and think they should have been tag champions this entire calendar year), but they would be well down the list of AEW tag teams behind Bucks, Lucha Brothers, Santana and Ortiz, FTR, Best Friends when they're healthy, and right with Jurassic Express

I sincerely hope no one ever can convince her to think otherwise!
