AEW Dynamite - 8/4/2021

Stoked for Darby and Garcia.  Garcia and 2.0 were fantastic last night.  Garcia seems like a talent worth developing.  Those 2.0 guys are new to me, but I already love them dearly.

I also love Malakai Black and Cody Rhodes.  And the Elite.  And Andrade.  This show is fucking fire right now.

I like the teased dissention in the ranks but for God's sake, I have no real desire to see nearly immobile Windham Rotunda show up as the new power behind heel DO, much less have him return to a wrestling ring in a working capacity anytime soon.

No feelings either way on Bray joining the DO, but I don't think he's nearly immobile. Bray has often wrestled in a quick and urgent style, but it's clear that the WWE prefers that their monster characters work a very slow and deliberate style. I think post-Max Cady Bray was instructed to slow it down considerably.

Now, I don't expect Bray comes back and start wrestling like it's 2014 again as he does have some age and miles on his tires, but I don't the The Fiend is indicative of what he can do.

I am a hardcore Bray stan, though, so my glasses may be coloured a certain shade on this one

Is there a wrestling term for when a dude makes his dangerous looking move much safer after a few weeks?

A few examples mentioned, but the one I always think of is the Liontamer going from a neck destroyer to a classic Boston Crab pretty early in Jericho's WWE run

She doesn't like commentating and she just had a kid.

She just mentioned that her non-compete with WWE is about to run out (it was super long for some reason), and she couldn't see herself not being involved with professional wrestling.

It’d be pretty weird for them to have a 4 man booth for Rampage to go to a 2 man booth for Dynamite.

And IMO, if they’re going continue to have Young Buck style matches where wrestlers completely disregard the rules to do tons of spots, they’d need to bring in someone to carry those portions.

Maybe they could get the ROH play by play guy from late 2002. Don’t watch a lot of ROH but I always thought he was good when I have.

They were in NXT during the Wednesday Night Wars. They were called Permanent Viagra or something. Before that they were a team on the indies, working Chikara and stuff.

The Attitude Adjustment Adjustment? The Flatback Flump?

I think they were just presented as non-contracted talent looking for their big break in the big leagues.  I haven’t followed NXT too closely especially since WWE tried that stupid Wednesday Night War.  I never saw them in’ recent years  but I have seen them in Chikara before they signed with NXT.

Were you supposed to know who they were?

It depends.  They have been a team continuously since 2002.  If you like following promotions that aren’t on TV then Tony Khan thinks you would know who 2.0/3.0/Ever-Rise are.  If you follow televised wrestling then Tony K may think you know that team from being either on NXT or in the news after being released from NXT just recently.

So, to make a long story short, YES AEW may have expected you to know who they are.

I always thought they were roughly 80% charisma and/or personality and 20% athleticism.  I didn’t think they were bad but I did think their time spent Nell-to-bell was unremarkable in every respect.

For my tastes they have a pretty unimpressive presentation of…whatever it is that they are supposed to be portraying.  I always thought that they really needed a consistent and well-defined gimmick backstory or tag team personality/identity.

This is what a place like NXT was supposedly for.  It feels like NXT doesn’t really do that AT ALL for the wrestlers who need it there.  For all the hyperbole over smaller Indy wrestlers not having the complete package it sure does look like maybe only Trevor Lee has a different persona than he had in PWG or Evolve.

All the talent pillaged from those groups as well as all the ex-ROH guys all look, sound and even wrestle pretty much the same as they did before most were gobbled by the monster of insecurity WWE unleashed just so AEW wouldn’t get them.

I did enjoy that six man match that 2.0 was in on Dynamite.  It really helped that the “jobbers” didn’t get much offence against Los Tres Babyfacios- Moxley, Darby and Eddie.  The “wrestling”  aspect is really not one of their main attributes as a tag team.

They are the team you'd always sign on EWR several years ago even though you've never seen them wrestle before because their stats and low wage were just to good to pass up.

They’re like if a jobber tag team didn’t realize they were a jobber tag team, and cut promos like they were always in a blood feud, or going after the belts. Also they’re French Canadian… If that helps any?

I’ve always dug their sense of humor to be honest. So I was very pleased things haven’t changed just because they went to the “Performance Center”.

I thought that was Austin Lee and Erin Bray.

Yes, but also Brodie's health was beginning it's rapid decline so they had to quickly figure something out.

This is obviously not important at all given that people lost a father/husband/friend, but that match had no right being that good, and it still blows my mind a little that one of the participants was essentially in the early stages of lung failure. I'm in my "Exalted in Heaven" shirt as I type this, it's still so absolutely unfair and horrifying the guy's gone. Looking back, it's pretty impressive (though heartbreaking)

That's not the case.  From all the timelines I found from summaries of Amanda's podcast interview, and a timeline from Meltzer's story on his passing, Brodie felt ill on a Monday after he'd already dropped the title back to Cody and went right downhill from there, never appearing on TV again.  So Cody won the belt on October 7 and Brodie's symptoms didn't start until after that.

I don't think I've ever heard anything about him discussing symptoms with anyone prior to losing the title and his wife has been so open that you'd think she'd have mentioned it.  So unless I'm missing something (entirely possible!!!) I'm baffled as to where this narrative of "everyone knew he was sick so he had to lose it back to Cody" came from.

This as well. Such a tragedy. All the tributes to the late, great Mr. Brodie Lee showed how loved he was across the board. Same with Bobby Eaton. Mr. Brodie Lee vs. Cody's Dog Collar match on AEW Dynamite, 7th October 2020 was #6 in my top twenty best AEW matches of all time and I have it the full ***** before Lee's untimely passing.
