I get all the angles, including having an irritating heel champ that is so good in the ring he keeps surviving and that Danielson was about to go out, but the Urkel thing was not the face the company wanted to put forward in that exact moment. I could see 1980 Buddy Rose in that spot with that sort of feel but he’d have picked something contemporary to be annoying about. They had enough going for them in that moment that it doesn’t matter in a bubble but it was pretty bad.

I think part of the Elite’s charm for me is that it comes across as a meta commentary on how many wrestlers and fans their age were heavily influenced by 90s/00s cool heeling and how lame that is now. In a larger sense maybe it’s about millennials desperately grasping at pop culture nostalgia as a stop gap for ennui, anxiety, and despair, so the Urkel thing would play into that. Or they’re just having fun being dicks. That said, I don’t know what a casual or lapsed fan that bought this show would think of that, so you may be right.

Talking about Show/special attractions brings up a thought: THERE ARE NO BIG FAT GUYS IN AEW. There still aren't even that many hoss types. ROH has more than they do! So you know Tony, if you really want some balance in your programming, throw some money at Acey Romero or Beer City Bruiser and Brion Milonakis.

Who was the big guy that Cardona squashed a couple of weeks back? Was that Puf, and I just didn’t notice because he was wearing street clothes?

That was Sam Stackhouse, who I am not really familiar with.

e: Puf has some great gear, though I never noticed how short he is.

I think this is why I was so into the Bear Country signing, they come pretty close to filling that void

Does Jungle Boy know who Urkel is?

I managed to avoid results last night and watched this morning. I haven’t read through this thread yet or, for that matter, seen any reactions online. I just want to jump right in and say that in nearly 40 years of watching wrestling, that might be the best show I’ve ever seen.

Man, there were a litany of monster pops last night. Arguably the sneaky loudest was actually the Lucha Bros winning that cage match. The crowd came UNGLUED for that. Can't wait to see their future defenses - those guys deserve it. How about that spear by Red Velvet and the sell by Jamie Hayter? Hell yeah! Respect to Moxley for using TWO Paradigm Shifts to put away Kojima as opposed to one, trying to show he's a legitimate threat.

The thing about Abadon is, she was actually cleverly booked given the amount of folks they have to work with. She got a "freaks out another wrestler" spot, got to eliminate the hometown underdog, and then got pitched immediately to defuse any negative reaction from said underdog being tossed.

So on one hand I see the risk of last night’s booking resulting in Adam Cole maxing out at the Scott Hall or Tully Blanchard of AEW. There are a lot of similarities there (“Bay Bay” = “survey time”, Tully’s stooging), even if Cole isn’t the in ring worker Tully in particular was.

But then again, maybe Scott Hall IS the best possible version of Adam Cole character-wise? And there’s nothing wrong with that whatsoever. Like I’d rather have him stooging around and interacting with the crowd along with 15 minute matches than the 40 minute nonsense he was doing In NXT

If Adam Cole turns in a career remotely as commercially successful as Scott Hall/Razor did he will have had one hell of a run, and AEW will have been watched by many millions more eyes. Of the 3 incomers he has by far the most to prove, as he’s as yet never been on a commercial level similar to Punk/Danielson key runs. Entering his prime though, so will be interesting to see what they do with him. Less urgency to put him immediately over the top.

Agreed, but the beautiful thing about AEW's booking philosophy and its talent depth is that he will get his moment to shine, but he'll largely be doing shorter matches, and quite a few tag matches at that. Not even their champ Omega is out there doing 40 minute matches, and he wrestles in tags most of the time. This better be the last ppv world title defense with a no hope challenger though.

So with the Virginia Dynamite the week following Full Gear, I think it's safe to say Page will not be challenging at NYC. When do we get that gnarly multiman tag that was hinted at last night? I cannot wait to see Danielson in the mix with these fuckers. Christian and Bryan teaming before the inevitable Christian heel turn needs to happen. If they didn't just do a war games in May, that would be the perfect time for Christian to turn on Jungle Boy but they did.

I have a different take on Adam Cole. Kenny has talked a lot lately about how he wants to either retire or take a lot of time off because of how banged up he is. I think sooner rather than later Kenny winds up taking a backseat to everything or takes a lot of time off and Cole becomes the defacto leader of the group.

That then opens the door for all kinds of possibilities with Kenny turning face and going up against Cole or vice versa.

He either gets surgery or takes extended time off to repair the labrum and other knocks he's been carrying for who knows how long when he loses the strap. They have never stopped saying he's been manipulated by Callis for this run AND now they're going back to him being 10 when it started. Easy babyface turn after he gets booted by Adam Cole (revenge for the poisoned Monster!) and Callis switches his allegiance to the new shiny toy. I was hoping last year when the Callis stuff started that Ibushi would be around for a more long-term Golden Lovers reunion with the NJPW cross promotional stuff but the virus still being rampant and NJPW being NJPW makes that seem next to impossible. Still, there are certainly more than enough great acts on the babyface side for him to team up with to work the Elite should that be the avenue they go down (seems likely to me).  He could even have a loosely affiliated tag team with Page again, with the roles reversed.

Huge missed opportunity if Cole isn't doing this during every Omega/Elite promo/angle when the belt is present:

The MVP case for Russell Westbrook - Welcome to Loud City

Whatever happens, the Bucks can never be babyfaces again. I watched this with my best bud who is a wrestler and AEW casual, a non-fan who had only seen Revolution 2021 (used to watch WWE back in the day), and my sister whose wrestling habits are largely inflicted upon her by her boyfriend, aforementioned best friend. My sister fucking HATED the Young Bucks, Nick Jackson in particular, in the absolute way a wrestling fan should hate a heel. It was so awesome to see her just loathe these fucking guys. "That hair is the most disgusting thing... Oh my god, I hate his face! He's so annoying!" The non-fan was ragging on JR the entire night, which made me laugh. I was even thinking "bro, ease up!" But yeah, Bucks as heels are so money. If they do a bullet club betrayal with Omega, Young Bucks shouldn't have any hesitancy or any of that shit. It's been done. Just be the pricks that they are!

Interesting that none of the new guys in the company have talked about wanting to work either Miro or Page. Miro vs. Bryan could be better than the Brock/Bryan match, and I thought that was probably the best WWE match I've seen in the past 10+ years. Page vs. Cole, yes plz.

Also, kudos to Jim Ross on those calls last night. He really sold Suzuki big time and man, his call on Adam Cole and Bryan Danielson... That's why you have him on commentary. For moments like that to live on forever.
