Double or Nothing III - 5/30/2021

I will say I thought this was best laid out Casino Battle Royale that they’ve done, with the exception of Christian and Hobbs spending a significant portion of the match outside the ring, which I never like in battle royales.  After a few tries, I think they’re starting to get the hang out of how this match needs to flow.

Congrats to Britt Baker - now let's have her hold it for exactly one year, so Serena can unify the titles at DoN IV. I loved the Serena/Riho match. I thought it was better than the Shida/Baker match later on, though that one had better false finishes for obvious reasons, but this one man, the finish with the leg into the mat 5 or 6 times before grabbing the hold... *Chefs kiss*

This whole card was pretty awesome - my only tiny exception was that I thought the tag title finish was kinda weird. I don't know if someone was hurt or what or maybe I missed something or they went over time but I felt like that was a bit aprupt

Stadium Stampede pleasantly surprised me! Whoever I was discussing this a couple weeks ago with here, shout out to you, because you def called the match ending in the ring like Piper/Goldust.

The three way dance was the best one I've seen in a while, and the crowd was on fire here with the F U Don chant. Orange is way, way over still... Maybe he should be the one to take the TNT title off Miro down the line

Excellent show. Loved Serena/Riho once again and love hearing that Riho is back for good this time! Serena was one of my top suggestions last year, so I'm always thrilled to see her continue to shine and all the praise she is getting now. Finally getting her due after all these years and it's great to see. Also loved the pop both received here.

Speaking of pops, MONSTER pop for Hangman. Great to see that after all the twists and turns, he is seemingly as over as ever. Good match and victory for him. Then another incredible pop for the awesome Wild Thing entrance. I felt like Moxley & Kingston would've been the best choice to beat the Bucks here but it was not to be. Cody/Ogogo was fine but didn't stand out as much as I hoped it would. Archer/Miro was fun while it lasted, dug the Snake tease. Casino battle royal was just kind of there for me. Great win for Jungle Boy but felt like kind of a dud for Christian. I figured Christian would be challenging Omega soon but now feels sort of directionless.

Shida/Baker was great even if the ending was never in doubt, still loved it. Similarly I thought the 3 way was fantastic but ending never in doubt, though a couple near falls were decent.

STING was on fire, that was amazing to watch, loved it. Stadium Stampede was a blast. Didn't expect an extended Sammy/Spears segment to end it, but Sammy getting the big win was cool. Nice to end it with Judas full crowd version!

Oh, spot of the night goes to Ogogo delivering a KO punch while being in the figure four, getting a two count and Cody immediately no selling it.

And then using the super safe Vertebreaker on a guy who had 2 matches.

Man, the show was so long, Miro/Archer felt like it was on a different show altogether.  I think they saw the possibility of the crowd flipping Miro face coming and did everything in their power to get him heat, including throwing the “snake” bag, which was hilarious.

It's just hard to boo a guy who's so clearly having so much fun getting to say and do whatever the fuck he wants.

What’s with Cody having all these short feuds lately and winning decisively on the first match? Penta, QT, Ogogo.

Loved Stadium Stampede 2, it was very well paced and had some excellent use of props and weapons all the way through. Really liked Jericho putting over Sammy a lot near the end, you can see him getting Sammy in the middle of the group, telling him they’re gonna raise him on their shoulders, etc.

Gotta admit that they had me with two near falls when Audrey ran down to count Orange Cassidy’s pin and when Rebel hit Britt with the crutch.

Jungle Boy, Hangman, Mox and Kingston were crazy over with the crowd, they looked like Rockstars. It felt so good hearing actual full sized pops after so long.

I know some people can’t stand them but I can’t get enough of the Young Bucks being absolute dicks during their matches. Them acting like Macho Man, Hogan, HBK and Roman Reigns is so unnecessary but so entertaining. Never be faces again please.

What an amazing show, with every match save Cody-Ogogo being very good or better, and a few that likely crack AEW's best matches (tag title match, women's title match, world title match, Stadium Stampede 2, and quite possibly Hangman-Cage). Everything clicked tonight, with the full crowd back, the finishes (even the tag match, where it took basically death to beat Moxley), and a bunch of amazing, emotional moments. Whatever momentum AEW may have lost with goofy endings of Revolution and Blood and Guts is back going the right way, and I really hope to be at All Out in Chicago.

That was a fun show from start to finish. Aside from the absurd run time, the whole show was really good. There wasn't any one match that was overly bad. Hell, even Cody vs. Ooggo...which I thought would be bad ended up being pretty good (Cody winning withstanding).

I did hate The Bucks retaining though. Unless Santana and Ortiz are the next logical contenders, I cant think of anyone who is going to beat them right now.

Kenny vs. Orange Cassidy is a feud that needs to continue. A proper one on one match would be fun stuff.

Stadium Stampede II I thought was not as good as the original...but it certainly wasn't bad. FTR & Tully dressing up for a Bunkhouse Stampede was pretty damn epic. I thought the bar fight portion could have been better, but it was fun while it lasted.

Overall a good show. Just too damn long.

MotN was either the world title 3-way or the tag title match but the emotion in Jungle Boy's win, Britt hugging Tony, and Sting no selling the suplex, hitting the dive, and his overall performance really made it a wonderful PPV. Great stuff. Cody can go straight to Hell.

Britt/Shida was ugly as sin but I appreciated that they constantly covered by beating the piss out of each other. I think it's safe to say that Shida, while being able to be part of good matches and generally good, is an awkward wrestler who has admitted herself that she gets super nervous and forgetful in big matches. I'm glad the title switched and they almost kinda went with a turn but really didn't. Not only was the match discombobulated and messy but the crowd was clearly more into Britt and she still cheated her ass off to win. It didn't work but the important thing was she won and has the title.

The battle royal also was kind of a mess but a fun one. I really enjoyed how they had eliminations with old school over the top throws and all the stuff that we've completely been desensitized to because they never actually eliminate anybody. So the final two of Christian and Jungle Jack going immediately for the finish and throwing each other over the top worked more because we'd just seen a bunch of old school eliminations. Great finish that salvaged the match.

Ogogo looked green but good for somebody working their third match on TV and first that wasn't a squash. Cody can still go to hell. He's surpassed Gargano territory and straight into HBK hate territory for me. There is no lower rung. Straight to hell.

Agree that the tag match finish was abrupt but also incredible. Those were brutal shots and I loved the match. Bucks are peaking right now. I'm shocked Kingston and Mox didn't win though. The fuck!?

That was the best three way match in forever. Will pay to watch Omega vs. Pac forever. Orange is a star.

Legit got emotional during the Sting performance. Didn't think he had it in him and he took a mother fucking suplex on the ramp. Love that man to bits.

Riho/Deeb was a beautiful opener. Deeb is on her bullshit 100%. Best women's wrestler in the company especially now that Rosa is focusing on NWA for the time being. Riho is so good at fighting from underneath and getting in hope spots. She's still exposed when doing anything that should be more explosive but I really enjoy her.

Cage/Page was good but man... way too many reversals. Cage would be so much better if he worked a little bit more like Miro and just merc'd fools instead of doing so much complicated shit but he is Mr. GMSI, so.

Good call from Craig that the future stars got big moments: Jungle Boy Jack, Britt, Sammy, Darby, Hangmin. Fuck yeah. Show was long but only a few matches didn't really live up to the hype and even one of them had Miro throwing a fucking snake in a bag across the arena. Dude is outta his mind. I love him. Never lose. And for such a long show, the crowd was still super into the stampede stuff particularly when it returned to live action in Daily's Place.

Can’t wait to get home and watch the show. I had planned to hang out in Discord (hence my blink-and-you’ll-miss-it drive by in the chat) but alas work got in the way.

Just wanted to say, I watched You Cannot Kill David Arquette with the missus last weekend and it had reminded me afresh of how proud Luke Perry was of his son’s career progress and, looking at the Battle Royale results, how he’s doing his Dad proud tonight.

Speaking of, F4W notes on the scrum. Rampage will be taped with Elevation and Dark sometimes and live some other times.

Jericho said the match was filmed to be more like an action movie and Sammy/Spears definitely felt like it was from Under Siege III or something.

Not from the scrum, and I know I rip on JR constantly, but holy shit he was abysmal tonight for large portions of the show. They cannot old yeller his ass soon enough. Tony tries but he was kinda slipping all over himself tonight. Excalibur did well and I think a booth of Tony, Don Callis, and Excalibur would be great moving forward. Don's not doing any admin/booking work anymore at Impact, so just sign his ass full time. He's great and pretty much always has been.

Apparently Rampage commentary will be Mark Henry and another wrestler on the roster (along with one of Tony & Excalibur I imagine?).
