The Buffalo Sabres' cross-border rivalry with the Toronto Maple Leafs is heading outdoors.

The Sabres are listed as the home team against the Maple Leafs in the NHL's sixth Heritage Classic -- to be played at Tim Hortons Field, home of the Canadian Football League's Hamilton Tiger-Cats -- on March 13, the league announced Thursday.

Buffalo becomes the first U.S.-based team to compete in the Heritage Classic, which is part of the NHL's outdoor series of games and traditionally set in Canada featuring matchups of Canadian teams.

In choosing Hamilton, Ontario, as a host, the NHL selected a site that is virtually the midpoint of the 100-mile drive separating the Atlantic Division rivals.

Essentially they sold a home game to an opponent like the 2018 Winter Classic. May God rot those tumors on the sport of pro hockey Terry and Kim Pegula, there aren't enough words in the English language to express my visceral and seething hatred towards those incompetent morons.

On the other hand, it will probably be the most watched, highest profile game the Sabres play all year.

Jack Eichel has been stripped of his captaincy by the Sabres.

The other half of this is that Eichel, to no one's surprise, failed his physical.

I will say this - I think Eichel's right.  If I were him, and I could be at some point in the future, I'd want disc replacement surgery instead of fusion as well.  I have two bulging discs in my back - thankfully, they have ceased causing me pain over the last couple years - that could eventually require surgery.  Fusion offers no real guarantees of relief where disc replacement is far more promising though also far newer.

Simple solution: Sabres agree to allow him to get the disc replacement but he agrees that if it fails and he can no longer play he only gets a fraction of the $50 million guaranteed him. That's the biggest issue: if he does that surgery it voids the insurance on his contract and the team gets to toss $50 million straight into the Niagara River.

Yeah, that seems like a fair solution.  To be honest, I'm not sure there's any bad guys here.  I don't blame Eichel for wanting the surgery he wants and I don't blame the Sabres for wanting him to get the one their insurance recommends.

It's actually insane as fuck the Sabres have been all "We care about what's best for Jack Eichel" and then have railroaded him for not trusting some quack sports doctor.

You mean a "quack sports doctor" who not only prevented a Bills player who suffered a horrific neck injury from ending up a paraplegic but in fact saved his life. Seriously you can shit on the Sabres for so many things but their current medical advisors (who they share with the Bills) are not one of them.

10 minutes into his first practice a couple days ago, Detroit's Jakub Vrana injured his shoulder.  It was bad enough for him to see a specialist about it, no word yet on the results of that.

Vrana is out 4 months. That's a big loss for Detroit.

Ah, sleep problems and insomnia - the major issue in 3 of the big 4 leagues* that no one talks about.

* - not so much a problem in MLB where the players are relatively normal-sized humans and they spend multiple nights in the same place.

I don't really consider Lehner the most credible source, being a pro-Trump hobgoblin, but having said that I don't think it's even much of a secret the NHL is drugged to hell. There's no other way this many guys on the wrong side of 35 are such big stars.

Hell even when baseball cracked down on The Shit, that was actually the really interesting statistical feature. A ton of guys in their mid-30's suddenly, magically went off a cliff and the game got younger permanently.

Montreal Canadiens goaltender Carey Price has left the team to voluntarily enter the NHL/NHLPA player assistance program.

The Canadiens had indicated Price was unlikely to be ready for the season opener against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Oct. 13. Coach Dominique Ducharme said Wednesday that Price was "not doing well right now."

Ducharme said the expectation was to ease Price back into the lineup after the star goalie had offseason surgery to repair a torn meniscus.

Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin said that he learned of Price's decision Wednesday and that "the news caught me off guard." The GM addressed the team Thursday morning. Bergevin said that Price will be away from the team for a minimum of 30 days but that it "could be longer." He said he believes Price will be back with the team this season.

The NHL and NHLPA jointly announced Price's decision and said there will be no further comment.

Price's wife made an Instagram post basically explaining that Price is struggling with his mental health

Probably stress from her. Sounds like she had the moving trucks ready for Seattle and to get out of Quebec. Happy wife happy life and stuff. Hopefully he gets over this. Like I say to everyone who asks why hockey players would rather play in Dallas/Phoenix/Florida etc rather than in a place that lives and breathes hockey. It's because no one deserves the scrutiny and the abuse, in both official languages of Canada, these guys have to endure when they let in a soft goal
