Montreal got Carey Price to waive his no-trade so they could protect Jake Allen in the expansion draft. When someone figures out a good explanation for this, please let me know.

They are basically gambling

According to TSN, Montreal's thinking is that Price's contract would be a deterrent for Seattle. He has five years remaining on an eight-year, $84 million contract, and is due an $11 million signing bonus in September.

Pretty much as expected on the Jets end. They’re gonna lose either Appleton or Demelo, which sucks either way. Hopefully they get Copp signed long term to make up for this shitty development

TSN says Price might be facing knee surgery and has a hip issue:

Preds prospect Luke Prokop has become the first active NHL player under contract to come out as gay

I should note that he came out publicly in an Instagram post but had been coming out to family members during the year. He said he had come out to Nashville management last month

The schedule for the 2021-2022 season will be released on Thursday and rumors are that the NHL will take basically the month of February off because of the Winter Olympics.

HOWEVER - it doesn't mean that players will be allowed to participate as - despite agreeing with the NHLPA to let players play - apparently the NHL still hasn't reached an agreement with the IOC about it

Quote

After skipping the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympics, the NHL agreed to allow its players to return to the Olympics in 2022 and 2026 as part of the four-year extension of the collective bargaining agreement it struck with the NHL Players' Association last summer. But that agreement didn't guarantee NHL players would represent their nations in the Winter Games. The league still needs to iron out issues with the International Olympic Committee that the NHL claims prevented the players from going in 2018.

"We negotiated in good faith with the Players' Association last summer," deputy commissioner Bill Daly said last month. "We agreed that if the conditions were right and we could reach an agreement on all the material issues that we would commit and support going to the Olympics. That remains our position."

Before the Stanley Cup Final, NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said there were "real concerns about whether or not it's sensible to have our players participating and us shutting down for an Olympic break." Among those concerns: the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and how it might impact the Beijing Games.

"With the continued uncertainty with the virus, with the Games being halfway around the world, it's not necessarily an ideal Games to go to," Daly said.

Sources told ESPN last week that the agreement between the NHL and the IOC was "still be worked on," but the anticipation is that a deal could be struck in late July.

Kraken picks have been leaking. Jets apparently lose Appleton, which is longterm probably worse than losing Demelo, but better short term. The Jets RHD is terrible and Demelo is the first partner Morrissey has looked good with since Trouba left

The Philadelphia Flyers traded defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere and two draft picks to the Arizona Coyotes and received nothing in return.

The Flyers sent a second-round pick in 2022 and a seventh-round pick in the 2022 NHL draft, previously acquired from the Montreal Canadiens, to the Coyotes on Thursday.

It's the second trade in the last week made by the Coyotes in which nothing was sent to the other team. They also acquired forward Andrew Ladd, a 2021 second-round draft choice (60th overall from Colorado), a 2022 conditional second-round draft choice and a 2023 conditional third-round draft choice from the New York Islanders.

In both cases, the Coyotes acquired a bounty of draft picks while taking on a contract teams wanted off of their salary caps. Ladd has two years left on his contract, with a $5.5 million cap hit if he plays in the NHL. Gostisbehere has a $4.5 million cap hit for the next two seasons.

This is happening - a "pause" begins Feb 3 with the All Star Weekend being Feb 4 and 5 and then the "Olympic Break" starts Feb 7 and goes until Feb 22

Reminder that the Kraken are going to the Pacific (Arizona doesn't go to the Central until next year)

To handle the imbalance....

The addition of the Kraken altered the NHL's schedule balance. Each team will play one home and one away game against opponents in the other conference; three games against the teams in the other division on their conference; and either four games or three games against the teams within their own division.

The NHL opted not to continue having multi-game "homestands" for teams against the same opponent in the same city, which were a prominent part of the 2020-21 schedule and popular among the players.

I did not appreciate having to stare at Sam Consentino's face for 2 hours before getting to the Jets pick.

Fully expected the Jets to go D, maybe not Lambos because that is a lot of pressure to put on a hometown kid, but someone else. But pretty happy with the pick of Chaz Lucius, the last couple drafts the Jets seem to be prioritizing skill, which is a good for a team with such bad 5on5 numbers. Plus, that is an A+ name.

No real surprises through the first 18 picks, would have been nice if the trades this afternoon weren't announced until the draft, but oh well

Canadiens really making sure they lose any goodwill they may have earned over the last couple months by drafting Logan Mailloux, who literally asked not to be drafted this year after non consensually sharing explicit photos of a woman he had sex with

The Habs just drafted the kid who just renounced himself from the draft lol. I wonder how this will shake out.

Considering the Habs were also the team that apparently tried to get Tony Deangelo earlier this year and Bergevin was on the 2010 Blackhawks staff....probably not good
