Edmonton Oilers forward Ryan Nugent-Hopkins has signed an eight-year, $41 million contract before he would have reached unrestricted free agency this offseason, the team announced Tuesday.

His $5.125 million cap hit is lower than that of his previous contract, which was $6 million annually on a seven-year deal. His new contract also carries a no-movement clause. His prior deal had no trade protection.

The term is too long but the price is good for a guy that can play either C or W and chips in 50-60 points and can kill penalties. And honestly who gives a fuck, McDavid isn't going to be here in 8 years so nothing will matter then anyway. Win now or win not at all. Really happy the guy might be e lifer.

It absolutely hideous news

Police in Novi, Michigan, said Monday that 24-year-old Columbus Blue Jackets goaltender Matiss Kivlenieks died after hitting his head following a Fourth of July fireworks accident.

Lt. Jason Meier of the Novi Police Department said a mortar-style firework tilted slightly and started to fire toward people nearby. Kivlenieks was in a hot tub and fled along with several other people, but he slipped and hit his head on concrete, Meier said.

The fire department and EMTs got to the private home about 10:13 on Sunday night and took him to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead, Meier said. An autopsy is scheduled for Monday.

"At the moment, we're pretty certain this was a tragic accident," Meier said.

It doesn't really change anything, but they're saying the cause of death was not a fall. He got hit by one of the fireworks.

A medical examiner in Michigan says an autopsy has determined that Columbus Blue Jackets goaltender Matiss Kivlenieks died of chest trauma from an errant fireworks mortar blast, and not a fall as authorities previously reported.

This happened not far from where I live, so sad. Michigan legalized mortar style fireworks a few years ago and it was a HUGE mistake, those things are way to powerful and shoddily made for drunk, tipsy or even sober people to be lighting off in a backyard. That’s not even taking into account vets who have to deal with what sounds like artillery fire for two weeks.

The Edmonton Oilers acquired Chicago Blackhawks star defenseman Duncan Keith on Monday in a trade for defenseman Caleb Jones and a 2022 conditional third-round draft pick, a source confirmed to ESPN.

Keith waived his no-movement clause to facilitate the trade. He has reportedly expressed a desire to be closer to his son in British Columbia.

There was no salary retained in the trade by Chicago. Keith has two years left on his 13-year contract at $5,538,462 against the salary cap.

Keith hasn't been remotely good in literally years, he's statistically one of the worst players in the entire NHL, and he makes way too much money for what he'll be asked to do at this stage, so naturally we had to have him. And gave up both a pick and a prospect to do it. Wonderful stuff.

Would the Keith trade have happened if Ryan Suter was bought out a day earlier?

I think so because the Oilers absolutely do seem to think lack of Veteran Rings is the problem and not that "Mike Smith had a good year but played bad against Winnipeg, also the secondary scoring is Kailer Yamamoto by himself". Hopefully there's some scoring help coming, like I wouldn't hate trying Tatar as long as he doesn't have to play on the top line or something.

The Philadelphia Flyers, Nashville Predators and Vegas Golden Knights made interconnected trades ahead of Saturday's roster freeze for the Seattle expansion draft.

The Flyers, who missed the postseason this year after advancing to the second round in the playoff bubble last year, traded center Nolan Patrick and defenseman Philippe Myers for defenseman Ryan Ellis of the Nashville Predators, who then sent Patrick to the Vegas Golden Knights for center Cody Glass.

Ellis, 30, spent his entire career with the Predators. He had 18 points in 35 games last season, and has averaged over 23 minutes per game in each of the last four seasons. Ellis, who fills a right defense need for the Flyers, is signed through 2027 with a $6.25 million cap hit.

By shipping out Patrick, the Flyers will be able to protect an additional forward in the Seattle expansion draft next week. Among the players who could fill that spot are James van Riemsdyk and Nicolas Aube-Kubel.

In trading away Ellis and Victor Arvidsson, who went to the Los Angeles Kings earlier in the month, the Predators have cleared $10.5 million in cap space. In acquiring Glass, 22, the Predators get a player who is exempt from the expansion draft.

Patrick, 22, was the second overall pick in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft. He has 70 points in 197 games, all with the Flyers. He has a connection with Vegas general manager Kelly McCrimmon, who owned the Brandon Wheat Kings of the Western Hockey League, where Patrick played junior hockey.

In September 2019, Patrick was diagnosed with a migraine disorder that kept him out from April 2019 through January 2021.
