The Cricket Thread, Mark 2

I was really interested in the cricket thing at Shea but those ticket prices were a serious turn-off. My co-worker (from Guyana, big Windies fan) is going but couldn't afford to bring her son to this... how sad is that? It's a shame because priced competitively, this could've been a real gateway for T20 cricket in the US after Pro Cricket (which I went to and dug) went belly-up awhile back. But no, let's price 90% of your potential fanbase out of the market for shits and giggles.

This is actually streaming on ESPN3. Looks like every Indian in Gotham made the trip... about 20K or so, a very healthy crowd. The announcers are clearly in love with Citi Field. TOM SEAVER END! DWIGHT GOODEN END!

I think this was as one sided a domination as you could ever get between the Big Eight Nations

50 over match, Sri Lanka @ New Zealand.

Sri Lanka 117 all out (in only 28 overs of the scheduled 50)

New Zealand 118 for none out (in 8.2 overs!)

The video is just wow., the score actually flatters Sri Lanka a bit, as the New Zealand announcers get a little bored "Oh, there's another six..."

The main groups of the World T20 have started.. and here's the difference between being an idiot and being a genius.

Before New Zealand's inning "Wait, NZ left out their two best fast bowlers and is playing three spinners? They've lost the plot."

(New Zealand Score 126 for 7)

"See, a below average score. India loves spin, this is their home ground, no way they can lose"

(India collapse to 79 all out)

"Um, New Zealand's full of geniuses to figure out how much the pitch was good for spin bowlers! Yah! We knew it all along"

More cricket on American TV, as OneWorldSports (who already had England National Team games) signed a three year deal to air the Caribbean Premier League (who will be having four games in Florida this year)

I wish OWS would get on DirecTV already, and this is another reason why.

Cricket Australia has signed new television broadcast deals for the United States and Canada, including a breakthrough one-year deal with the NBC Sports Network to show 10 KFC Big Bash League matches.

NBCSN will broadcast a weekly BBL match of the round live and on replay, while all BBL|06 finals will be aired on delay.

With NBCSN part of most basic cable packages in the US, it means the BBL will be available in almost 85 million US households.

The 10 matches will also be simultaneously available on NBCSports.com and on the NBC Sports app.

In the USA, CA has also renewed all rights with its longstanding partner Willow for the next five years starting this season, including men’s Tests, ODIs and T20s, women’s international matches and both the BBL and the Women’s Big Bash League.

Cricket fans in the USA who are subscribers of Willow will also be able to live stream matches through cricket.com.au.

In Canada, CA has forged a deal with new partner Asian Television Network (ATN) for the next five years, as exclusive rights holder of all men’s and women’s international matches, plus the BBL and WBBL. Cricket fans in Canada who are subscribers of ATN will also be able to live stream content at cricket.com.au.

Dayumn! Talk about a barnburner in the West Indies-India game in Florida.

It came down to the final ball with the West Indies winning by ONE RUN. Plenty of big scoring, too, 489 runs scored total, which I believe is a record in T20 games.

The Big Bash League is on NBCSN, you've missed some decent games.

Speaking of Aussie Cricket:

Holy shit, that ending to the Aussie-Pakistan Test Match.

A bowling surface more like concrete then anything really conducive to good bowling. Nearly two full days lost to rain. Pakistan scored 443/9 in their first innings, and Australia scored 624/9 before declaring early on the final day. The game was petering out to an inevitable draw..

except..

Except the pitch all of a sudden got friendlier, and the Aussie attack all of a sudden was asking questions that the Pakistani batsmen weren't prepared to answer. They came out expecting a block and yawn, but the ball was swinging, and turning on them. (In baseball terms, they were expecting batting practice and got the equivalent of Roger Clemens and Charlie Hough in their primes one after another, back and forth)

In the end, with just under an hour left in the match, Australia got the final wicket, Pakistan had only scored 163, and Australia won the match by an innings and 18 runs

Holy shit, in the Pakistan-Australia 2nd Test Match,  David Warner becomes only the fifth batsman in Test history (140 years) to score 100 runs in the first session of a Test. He scored his 100 off 78 balls. That's a good scoring rate, for a T20 or a One Day game, for a Test Match, it's Warp Seven stuff. To contrast, his batting teammate, has faced 84 balls.. and scored 28.. which is more traditional stuff from an opener.
