Cummins, Hazlewood, Starc and Lyon will tear England a new one.

I don't know about Cummins and Lyon but Hazelwood and Starc didn't exactly rip through Bangladesh in the first two T20s.

Meanwhile, Kohli just did his best Rory Burns impression.

Too dark to play at 2:30pm, what the hell is wrong with these people.

Is there another group of batsmen who are dug out of a hole by the bowlers more often than this England side? Maybe West Indies with Walsh and Ambrose in the late nineties/early millennium.

When they were down in India, England put up an uninspiring total, got the first four wickets relatively cheap and then Rishabh Pant started doing stuff like reverse sweeping James Anderson on his way to a century. You're not wrong, mind, but England aren't out of any hole until he's gone.

If it's a cloudy enough day they might not even play at all.

EDIT: Pant gone for 25, okay two decent batters left, England not looking too bad but they need to learn how to bat sometime before they go in again.

Today is also 'Red for Ruth day' at Lord's, in memory of the late wife of Sir Andrew Strauss, who passed away from a rare form of lung cancer in December 2019.

The Ruth Strauss Foundation was launched in her memory, with one day each summer dedicated to the foundation with the venue, commentators and spectators encouraged to wear red.

Aside from Root, Anderson and Broad England might as well pick pick a squad of pub cricketers to face Australia.

Joe Root has 334 runs in the series. Only one other England batter has got more than 70...

---

Joe Root now has 11 scores of 150-plus in Test cricket. That takes him level with Sir Alastair Cook as the most 150-plus scores for England.

Check these Joe Root stats out:

Joe Root has collected several landmarks in this game alone...

  • He surpassed Graham Gooch's tally of 8,900 Test runs to move into second on the England all-time list behind Alastair Cook's 12,472.
  • Aged 30 years and 227 days, he became the second youngest player to 9,000 Test runs, after Cook.
  • He scored his 22nd Test century. Only Cook (33) and Kevin Pietersen (23) have more for England.
  • He made his 11th score of 150, joint top with Cook among England batsmen.
  • He passed 150 for the fourth time in 2021, second only to Pakistan's Mohammad Yousuf in a calendar year.

His form is so good that Root has scored more centuries than entire teams in 2021...

  • 5: Joe Root
  • 4: India
  • 4: New Zealand
  • 3: South Africa
  • 3: West Indies

---

This was Joe Root's fifth Test century of 2021. Only Denis Compton and Michael Vaughan have made six in a year for England.

He was only denied the opportunity to become the first England player to make three double hundreds in a calendar year because he ran out of partners.

Michael Vaughan is a shithead so I hope he breaks that particular record.

If England get cracking today, they might even win, slightly ahead at the end of day three after an innings each. Need to bowl India out quickly (which might happen) and cheaply (which might not)

We have a new all-time Test record. Dom Sibley's was the 10th duck by an opener in a calendar year for England - the most by any team.

---

This is the third time this year England's top three have been dismissed for less than 10. Before this year it had not happened since 2008.

Fuck sakes.

Joe Root was finally dismissed after scoring 213 runs off 381 balls in this Test.

---

Joe Root has scored more runs in this series than any other England batsman has managed in all of 2021.

We're truly fucked without Joe Root in the form of his life batting.

The only hope for the Ashes is the performance of C Ovid in the months before so Australia stays shut.

Found this and thought of you, @Jimbo_Tsuruta.
