Watching some off these early 90's uploads on The Vault I'm feeling that Jim Neinhart is a better color commentator than Savage or Piper. I feel the later two spend too much energy putting over their own gimmick as opposed to Jim just trying to put over the matches

Absolutely.  Savage’s shtick was best in promos.  Babyface Savage on commentary was a corny dork.

I have one word to describe Piper's commentary in the WWF...cocaine.

He was probably holding for Vince which is why he got the job

Maybe that's how Neidhart got the commentary gig. Of all people, he seems like an odd choice for commentary.

Well Bret was starting his singles push so they where looking for something for him to do. He comes across as an ex athlete doing color as opposed to a cartoon. Probably due to his football background, in hindsight they could have put him with Owen instead of doing High Voltage

They did put Neidhart with Owen as The New Foundation, which lasted until before WM8, when Neidhart was fired. Owen ended up working a singles match at WM8 against Skinner.

I had no idea this was a thing in 91

Check out their match against the Orient Express at the '92 Royal Rumble.

Are you implying he wasn't on coke in Mid-Atlantic/Georgia?

I'm sure he was, but I've never heard Piper's commentary from Mid-Atlantic/Georgia.

Bret claimed that Vince wanted to get value back after having paid for Neidhart's lawyers during his countersuit against whatever airline claimed he attacked a flight attendant.

My hot take: Shawn Michaels vs. The Undertaker Hell in a Cell at In Your House 18: Badd Blood is the best Shawn Michaels vs. The Undertaker match. It's a ***** classic better than their other ***** classic at WrestleMania XXV. Who's with me and Brian Fowler?

Wasn't it DEAN~! Who said no match where the finish is the Undertaker's evil brother comes out from underneath the ring to cost him the match can't be 5 stars

If it was, it's the only time I disagree with the great man. Love and miss you, DEAN.

I mean, if he did, it's not applicable, because Kane didn't come out from under the ring, he ripped off the cage door.

i found their Mania matches to be overwrought and they got worse as time went on. I would totally be on the HIAC match is their best bandwagon.

haha, i agree with that sentiment wholeheartedly. But i do love that match. I also believe the John Cena/Kevin Federline match to be absolute perfection, so maybe nobody should trust my ranking system.

I disagree.  I feel like if the Undertaker's evil brother pops up out of nowhere to cost him the match, and you leave thinking, "Wow, that was a great match," it is possibly the only reason you should break your match scale to go over five stars.  Saying that a match was so great that you forgive the fact that it brought Kane into your life is a hell of a statement.  And it's true.

Can't be less than 5 stars maybe?

That's probably more how I could see him seeing the situation, absolutely! He would definitely appreciate the absurdity of such an ending! It CAN be the other way around, yes, but this way it makes a lot more sense.

My hot take (which crosses over with the "former wrestlers on color" conversation) is that Tony S., Stevie Ray, and Mark Madden are a top three team on WCW television.

I only have Tony/Heenan/Dusty and Ross/Ventura in front of them. I'll also make the further fiery hot argument that if Tony S., Stevie Ray, and Mark Madden had more time to gel in front of a better television show being produced by a more stable company, they would have been legitimately good enough with time that people would think of them all more fondly in those roles.

I'm pretty certain this is a take at the sort of level that would get Woody Paige immediately muted on Around the Horn.

Their first match was their best and it was all downhill from there? I’m fine with that.
