NJPW relies too much in 99% of matches ending in a finisher and I hate it because as good as the match is you know it's never going to end with anything other than a Rainmaker, 3 x Hi Fly Flows, etc

I doesn't matter how many times Kota and Naito drop each other on their heads with the sickest moves imaginable, the Destino o Knee ends it.

I really like how AEW finishes lots of matches with secondary moves.

This is why Tana's 2019 run was so awesome to me, he kept using different finishers.  Also why I enjoy ZSJ matches- you got a good chance of some unique and cool roll-up being the finish (not so many subs these days)

Tana-ZSJ was my favorite NJPW feud

I didn't like Will Ospreay and Marty Scrull long before the Speaking Out movement. I know both polarised opinions pre Speaking Out. Like them even less now.

Stormbreaker is shit. I'd say that even if somebody else was using it.

I was just starting to like Ospreay when the speaking out stuff came out. He was strating to put things together better but yeah my opinion of him dropped back down last year (he's heel turn has been lame as well)

The only time I thought Scurll looked good was against Okada at All In, I thought maybe I can get into this guy he's never looked this good, turned out you just look great when you're in the ring with one of the best of all time. Ospreay/Okada at WK is easily Ospreays best match too and the only worthwhile thing to come out of his turn (well heel Cobb is good too). Stormbreaker is lame as hell, but I thought it was still better than the oscutter.

I do agree that NJPW is too reliant on finishers to finish matches, most of these guys have secondary big moves that could easily end matches.

Another NJPW take is that as great as Dangerous Tekkers are both guys should be getting bigger singles matches and being positioned higher up the card.

The pandemic has shown which companies have good booking and which don't. NJPW has struggled since they resumed shows. They really wanted Ospreay to be their next Omega. He looked and sounded like a dork after winning the NJ Cup. It should be Khan running The Empire (United Empire? Empire? Which is it?) at this point.

I wish the mma influence on wrestling had been more finishes coming from secondary moves/submissions/etc. Not guys in kickpads doing bad jiu jitsu.

It's sad seeing NJPW's fall since 2018 ended. A call was inevitable from such high highs but it still sucks. The mess with Double Gold Dash, Will Ospreay/Marty Scurll, the bad booking and what's been done with the IWGP Heavyweight and Intercontinental Championship. Such a contrast to where they were.

Modern New Japan is just snowflake bait fake 'epics' where guys go long for the sake of going long because they have conditioned their fanbase to think that's makes a match great. Most of the matches are painfully boring and aimless for 90% of the way until the finishers and counters at the end. Someone like Ibushi has a great physical skillset and is a great athlete, but absolutely does not have the understanding of how to lay out/pace/build a match to be going 30 minutes. The promotion's over-reliance on Bullet Club/whatever heel faction interference is a crutch to compensate for their heel workers not being able to make matches exciting without cheap tactics. Jay White' trash talk is also WWE-levels of bad. Actual hard-hitting heavyweight style wrestling in Japan has been dead for a while now.

During the Sho-Hiromu jr title match back in February they kept stating on commentary that it was the longest jr title match ever. It was just drawn out 35 minutes, they didn't have a 35 minute match.

And what a pointless accolade that is. It's even dumber in kayfabe ('it took you 35 minutes to beat a guy').

I agree with all these points. Shingo Takagi vs. Hiroshi Tanahashi became the longest NEVER Openweight Championship match ever at over 30 minutes but didn't Tuesday it's welcome. Planning to do a thread in the Japan forum about NJPW either calling it NJPW's woes or NJPW's problems. Been on my mind the last month.

Just to connect a few more dots on the TNA and WCW comparison is my intention here, but it could be taken as another entirely separate take.

I’d mentioned that TNA was nothing but confusion and crap for 1 to a few hours a week, and that WCW only remains the clusterfuck champion because they were that for so many more hours a week. They were on TV every day for a long time counting the syndicated shows. In those additional hours you could find some good stuff and occasional greatness.

In TNA the best I ever found was the occasional, unintentional entertaining train wreck. Everything else sucked. The wrestling sucked, the announcing sucked and the ring sucked. The ring. It was so bad that they managed to give us a reason to complain about the actual ring itself.

The Sting vs Abyss Casket match nearly stealing the greatest Wrestlecrap match honor from the Chamber of Horrors was their peak for me. Greatest Wrestlecrap match is still an honor but almost the greatest, and having nothing else great to brag about, is not.

A lot of puro fans are gate keeping scat munchers.  There's this expectation that EVERYONE should have grown on up tape trading and IRC channels, so if someone's only exposure to the pro graps was WWE and WCW, again, because they didn't have the means to see foreign stuff, then they don't DESERVE to watch lord and savior Kawada who descended from Mt. Head Drop with the original 5 star matches which math be damned are superior to 7 star matches.

Look I really like modern New Japan and Mid 2000s NOAH was my jam during that time period but it's this whole thing how a lot of fans are like "Well why don't people appreciate this more," I don't know, stop chasing them away you fucking dick taxis.

Also, Shawn Michaels having a bad punch should not disqualify all the other awesome stuff he did.... this fucking board sometimes, man.

So when Nigel McGuinness was in his glory days in Ring of Honor he was probably my favorite wrestler during that time period, so I pretty glad he got a shot in TNA.  There was that video floating around of some Hogan vs. Abyss match that someone put a sepia filter on and scored to old timey music and put in old movie cards on it and when Nigel/Desmond showed up it was "CAN THE ENGLISHMAN BE OF HELP!"  So yeah seeing my one of my favorites reduced to that but at least that clip was pretty hilarious

ROFL some good homemade YouTube stuff did come from TNA. The BPP math lesson is another example. There was so much crap that I guess it acted as fertilizer when the weather was right.

I recall reading that NJPW was supposedly running longer matches to make up for shorter cards with less variety of talent during the pandemic. They always have gone too long but it might explain some of that.

To be fair, going long = good has always been a weird mindset some have had.

Not quite dead just yet.

For example: MiSu vs Ishii from G1 Climax 30

EDIT: Oh, right... Hawt taykz.

Here's mine: Pro wrestling is fun. Watching it is fun, discussing it is a fine way to pass some time, going to live pro wrestling shows and hanging out with pro wrestling friends is just about the most fun a person can have with their clothes on. Over-analyzing pro wrestling and getting all worked up about pro wrestling opinions is...

Spoiler

...also a lot of fun

any curse word plus any noun? OK.

Cody's neck tattoo is dagnabbit marshmallow.

The new IWGP title belt is jumpin’ Jehoshaphat air conditioner.

Nope. Not working for me. Let's try again.

People who didn't grow up watching blurry videos of Volk Han matches are H-E-double hockey sticks plebeians.

HBK's punches are pussyfarting gimcrackery and ayone who defends them is a perhot' podzalupnaya scarabaeus viettei

Oh, OK. I think I see how that works now.

Pfft, if you paid attention you'd have known that his punch is actually fine, it's his chop that was usually awful...

Every HBK chop I’ve ever seen seemed Owen Hartish. Hear me out. He seemed like he was joking around while doing them, and occasionally doing all but exposing the entire business like Owen did even though he wasn’t being blatant lol! Then when the whooo chants started it’s a wonder Vince didn’t ban the move. I personally love chops but they really are dumb lol! Also the reason I refer to every chop “I’ve ever seen” is because I haven’t watched as many HBK matches as a lifelong NWA/WCW fan.

One match I did see was the Hogan Summerslam match. Now that was blatant and that was AWESOME lol! I can’t believe the crap HBK still catches over that match. I still maintain that there are wrestling Gods and that Hogan blew them. He’s just always the victim every time, which isn’t often because nobody ever tried him no matter how big of a liar and a jerk he always was.

I'll somewhat miss the Thunderdome/no fans set ups right now because I find American crowds to be obnoxious. Mostly interested in getting in every stupid chant and distracting from the matches. It's been bad ever since the post WM29 Raw and it was a problem prior to that for a long time.

The "you fucked up" chant and anyone who starts it can fuck right off. The "what" chants are not funny. "This is awesome" has been overused.
