The Coolest Names For Wrestling Moves/Holds

DEAN

Recommended Posts

Can't believe it's been 6 pages and no one (myself included) has mentioned the Diamond Cutter. Perfect name for a perfect move, and inspired many terrible rip-offs for the opposite end of the spectrum (Bubba cutter and Cody cutter come to mind).

I wonder if DDP is proud of the fact that "cutter" is now a generic for the move he popularized.

Almost forgot these gems, some of which may have already been mentioned on the pages I didn't go back to skim:

Booker T - Harlem Hangover

Road Warriors - The Doomsday Device

Eddie Edwards - The Boston Knee Party

Tyler Black / Seth Rollins - God's Last Gift

Christopher Daniels - The Angel's Wings, The Last Rites.

I am also a sucker for workers with moves named after their shoot or real names rather than their gimmicks. (Gedo Clutch, Styles Clash, the Hart Attack, the Banks Statement, the Strong Hold, ad nauseum).

I think that no one mentioned the Diamond Cutter because everyone expected someone else to bring it up.

I have always wondered if Christian and KENTA have ever had heat concerning their finishers as Christian uses the Unprettier (which was awesome when it was named the Tommykaze) and the "busiaku" from Busiaku Knee Kick loosely translates to "to make ugly."

I must also give Kenny Omega some love for having video game themed finishers (Croyt's Wrath is named for a series of videos feturing German gamer who lost his shit playing Halo 2 and the One-Winged Angel is the nickname of Sephiroth from FF7) and of course his Cleaner gimmick is based on Albert Wesker, the villain from the Resident Evil games.

This is a bit of derail, but I've never understood this. Seems to me that both a sleeper and an RNC work by compressing the carotid arteries, and neither attack the windpipe, so it makes no sense to say that an RNC is a "choke hold" in a way that a sleeper isn't.

Kayfabe, brother.

With that said, anyone who tells you an RNC doesn't attack the windpipe is lying to you.  A rear naked choke is so effective, becuase it kind of shuts down everything immediately. If you've been in a triangle choke (which is 100% a blood choke), you can kind of fight it for a second until your brain uses up all the oxygen, a rear naked choke almost makes you panic, because of how immediately you realize you can't do shit but tap or go unconscious.  A blood choke makes you feel like your life has a dimmer, and the lights are slowly going out.  RNC makes you feel like someone just flipped a switch on your life and now you're struggling in the dark.  If that makes sense.

But ACE CRUSHER is a cooler name.

That all depends on who’s applying the hold and how clean you get it on, my guillotine is extremely nasty. Arm out, arm in, mounted, one arm, chin strap, most of them (if hook them clean) get a very quick tap. And it is absolutely a strangle or blood choke. My RNC people are usually slower to tap to, even if it’s on super clean. Triangles are different because usually even when put on quick the person slapping it on will change their angle to tighten it up or pull down on the head as well. These are all strangles. Unless you’re a goon your RNC should be a straight up strangle and not on the wind pipe, if it is, it’s in wrong.

How come Hogan's legdrop never had any kind of fancy name?

I always thought Ocean Cyclone Suplex was a cool name. I think it was in the No Mercy videogame. I don't like the overly contrived, wink-wink names that indy guys use nowadays. Frankensteiner might be the best original move name of the the last 30 (32?) years.

I like that even though Shining Wizard is a totally made up nonsense name it immediately became popular enough that 'shining' became a generic prefix for any move where you post off of someone's knee.

I got reminded on twitter the other day of one of my favorite pun indy move names: The Berkocet

Yeah, a bad (good?) guillotine feels like your head might pop off, but in my experience (I've done some judo and jiu-jitsu, but I spend more time reading and trying to understand grappling than I have actually grappling) guillotines are something everyone knows, but are often hastily applied.  The guillotine is the first choke I learned, and therefore the first choke I learned to defend so I've always been pretty confident with my defense.  So, one day I decided that I was going try to bait someone with an obvious guillotine opening and try to set up a guard pass, because I thought I was good with my defense.  Little did I know that this dude was the fucking guillotine master and he grabbed onto my neck, and twisted my neck at an angle that made me feel like he could have taken my head home and placed it on his fireplace if I didn't tap immediately.  It's one of the more unpleasant moments of my entire life.  Everything in the world cut off, and the only thing I could think about was getting this man to please let me go.  RNCs suck, but you kind of know when you're caught, you're caught.  Guillotines are nasty, because you always feel like you can defend it...until you can't and it feels like you're in that scene with the vice from Casino.

I’ve been training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for over 12 years under Matt Serra and am one of his brown belts. Technique and leverage over everything, angles make strangles as I’ve been taught. I’m only 5’ 8” & 150 pounds and have been told mine is ridiculously tight. Strangles should be blocking or sealing off the carotid arteries and not the windpipe, temple, or jaw.

Tyler Black / Seth Rollins - God's Last Gift

Ah, I looked through 6 pages of this thread hoping no one had mentioned it yet, and then got to page 7 and discovered you beat me to it.

It's a much better name than "Pittsburgh Plunge"... although I don't think they're quite exactly the same move?

I'm a white belt who gets the itch every so often and go to one of the many local jiu-jitsu gyms to roll for a month or so every so often.  If I stuck around for any length of time, I'm pretty sure I could probably get my blue belt, but I'm much more interested in grappling as an idea than as a lifestyle.  I am better than most of the white belts I roll with, and I probably tap a blue belt at about a 1:6 ratio.  They get me most of the time, but I compete well enough they can't let their guards down.

Since we're in the coolest name thread, the coolest jiu-jitsu choke is clearly the Peruvian Necktie.

I genuinely thought it was called Atomic Leg Drop...was this the real life, or was it just fantasy?

Reminds me that the official name for Johnny Valentine's back-of-the-neck elbow drop was the "Atomic Skullcrusher." In the stands, we usually called it "Jesus, that fucking elbow."

I think Tiger is 'A' level, but Dragon is 'S' level.  My proof is that a tiger driver is a fucking dope move, but there is not a dragon driver, because we kind of all agree that we haven't even invented anything that cool yet.

I always thought the difference between calling something a "Tiger" or "Dragon" was that a "Tiger" hold/move started from a double-underhook position while a "Dragon" move started from a full-nelson position.

I don't think it was ever referenced as such on screen but I vaguely remember seeing it named the "Atomic Leg Drop" in some video games and in print.

Where does the Steiner Flatliner sit in those rankings?

I believe if you add Steiner the name gets a 66 2/3rds %  chance of winning.

*Edit* Cremation Lily and Orienteering With Napalm Death are also great ZSJ move names.
