Gallows and Anderson aren't Impact Tag champions any more. They lost the belts to Finjuice last weekend.

I don't watch Impact on the regular, so I was unaware that they lost the belts.  I also zapped out most of the commentary since I was watching the show on DVR at 1AM this morning after I got home from work.

That kinda sucks because now the GBs have devolved from champs in their own right into mook bodyguards for Omega which makes any tag-team showdown between them and the Bucks all the more pointless.

I am not the biggest fan of the Good Brothers, but I feel badly for them.  Even though I believe that the right team won for the right reasons, you still have Karl and Doc unable to handle Kingston 2 on 1 and then the dropped a match to a fledgling tag team.  Doesn't exactly make you excited to see them square off against an established superteam like the Bucks, nor does it bring gleam to the Impact tag-team titles.

They beat the shit out of those two for the entirety of the match it seemed like and they lost to the most protected wrestler in the company. Plus, they're dirtbag heels and in AEW primarily used as heaters for the champ. I thought they looked pretty damn good given that. Then they Pillmanized Kingston's ankle in the post-match.

Well, Cody is the most protected worker in the company, but yeah Mox is almost equally shielded.

As for the match, the Good Brothers could not secure a win despite ambush tactics, eliminating Mox from the equation via Magic Killer on the floor, and having the numbers advantage on Kingston.

If the match was going to end with a beat-down, an injury angle for Kingston, and a teased crippling on Mox, then why not work that into a DQ instead of having Karl get rolled up and pinned clean as a sheet?  Mox and Kinsgston definitely need momentum at this stage of the Bullet Club angle, but I dunno if I'd be putting them over clean just yet.

On the plus side. The Bucks showed signs of maturity and I found myself pulling for them.  That doesn't happen often.

Caught the KingMox tag, Pinnacle promo, and the main, saving the rest for the weekend when we get to watch Snydercut.

And I gotta say, that main was just fucking unreal. I wanted to say the last hard hitting women's match I've seen before this (North America in last 7 years) was Sexy Star vs Mariposa from LU (thank you editing crew) but then again I barely remember the Becky/Charlotte match that kicked off Becky's face turn (or was it just the post match beating that was brutal?) so I'm likely misremembering (in my defense there's tons of NXT I've yet to catch up on so any of those matches post Bayley/Iiconics leaving i haven't yet seen)

Just such great character work by Britt and Rosa, and props for them not backing off and not trying to phone it in ?? Two warriors went to war and Tony nailed it calling Rosa the winner before correctly saying she'd survived it ? ?

re: fuck Shawn Spears and similar takes...

Okay, that’s just uncalled for? - hopefully that looks like the “10” gimmick.  My eyes are so bad and those emojis are getting more detailed that it is really just a guessing game....

Spears hasn’t said a word, wrestled a match or anything else apart from interfering at Revolution.  He has mostly wrestled on Dark before he did that confusing angle with Schiavone. Does he really just have so much ill will from jumping and being over pushed?  He isn’t established enough elsewhere to have residual heat with posters that crosses promotional lines with him when he jumped over.

I am warming to the fact that Cody is the most ludicrously booked guy on the show.  He often delivers with big matches but he is so directionless.  They don’t commit to any single idea.  He is probably paid too well to be used as a utility player - if that term means anything to those not into baseball.  He should be in continuous feuds at the very least.  Not losing to the guy who is going to put you on the shelf for various “reasons” is not helping anyone.  Maybe he can get stretchered out...by QT and The Freakbeast.  That looks far too convoluted for an angle that could have ended last week.

Pentagon could have injured him last week and that would set up nicely for the big return.  I wonder if Cody knows how bad his injury is?  He could be trying to put off the inevitable surgery.  Hopefully he won’t be out as long as Anna Jay might be.

Watched the matches today.

This will probably shock most people but I don't think Cody v Penta was that bad aside from a terrible ending. Penta really didn't go as long and heavy on the taunts as much as I have seen him do in the past. Most people are looking at Cody no selling the arm breaker but Penta took a cross rhodes, a cody cutter, a Canadian detroyer, the figure four and a cop killer. I'm not sure how much offense that is but it sure seems like a lot. But I would agree with the sentimate that the ending was really flat. They were going for an out of nowhere pinning combination but the execution wasn't good enough to make it work.

Jade has been a pleasant surprise of not stinking really badly and being actively impressive. The double arm chickenwing facebuster is the women's wrestling finisher of every power wrestler ever. Not sure why.

The ten man tag suffered from the terrible "You tagged in and I didn't want you to" trope which SUUUUCKS. Turns out Luchasaurus should have tagged in one of the 300 pounders in his corner instead of the incredibly useless Marko Stunt who got pinned in a short order, who could have guessed something so incredibly obvious! You can almost excuse The Bears for throwing Stunt at the heels since that's most of his Jurassic Express offense.

The Good Brothers are the most overrated team of this era. The beat down and subsequent, protracted heat was boring. Just a slog of a match and they had Eddie Kingston selling for them and if the match with Pac showed us anything, Kingston can sell like a genius. Moxley is getting to be like Randy Savage where he got laid out by the nWo every week for what seemed like months.

Didn't really pay attention to the Fenix match. Sorry?

One thing making that women's match even more amazing to me, is they did it with no audience just the few wrestlers in the front row there. To go out there and work that hard... and pull off a match that good with no actual fans is so fucking impressive. They deserve all the praise they're getting it. I didn't think Britt had that in her but jesus she went above and beyond. Her act with Rebel is like the modern day Jericho and Ralphus and I never want it to end. Who knew D.M.D. actual stood for Death Match Dentist? I'm quite shocked that AEW had a match that good taped a week in advance and had the restraint to not over hype it on social media. They have done a phenomenal job of keeping the taped weeks seem live and exciting in a way no other wrestling promotion has even been able to do with taped episodes. That will go down as one of the most famous women's matches of all time.

Strap up Britt asap. Let her hold the title for a year and duck Rosa that whole time. Finding loopholes to not have to defend against her. Then do a casino royale for a guaranteed world title shot. Rey Fenix wins only to take off the mask and reveal it's actually Thunder Rosa and she wants her guaranteed world title match against Britt Baker in a steel cage. (Rey Fenix starts wrestling with a long sleeve Penta style top for the two months leading up to this so it doesn't come out of nowhere lol).

Y'all remember last year when WWE wanted Thunder Rosa to be a referee? If you're wondering why they're in the shape creatively that they're in... wonder no more...

HHH is such a goof.  He made sure to get fucking Eli Drake signed up double quick, though.

I’m sure Eli Drake will do about as well as EC3 did the second time around in WWE.

Podcast Prichard is a big Eli Drake fan, so he might do okay. He shouldn't, but he might...

I don't recall hearing this. She mention it in interview?

I'm glad they put that terrible Cody/Penta match on first because the rest of the show was good to awesome. No idea why they decided it would be a great idea to kill Penta's biggest move, and then have him do the exact same turn as Scorpio did on Darby last week.

Good to see Cage breaking away from Team Taz. He seems way too good for that jobber stable, although the problem is that now he has to feud with a jobber stable.

The 10-man did a good job combining a lot of stories into one match.

Mox and Kingston could sell me on anything. Liked the nod to Southpaw Wrestling. I never really cared for the Gallows/Anderson team, but I think this AEW run is the best they've ever looked.

The women's main was a star-making match for both of them. I loved Rosa breaking the submission by just rolling Britt into the tacks. Probably the best use of tacks in 15+ years. I hesitate to say this was Sasha/Bayley level because while the initial spectacle was the same (perhaps even better), it doesn't seem... sustainable? They can't do this kind of stuff every match and there's not really a next level to take it to. It was an amazing one-off and great for both of them, particularly Britt, but I don't think this going to usher in an era of drastically improved women's wrestling for the promotion.

I'm really not just saying this after missing you out, @MoeCristyV.1.6, but the combination of your Kazuchika Okada avatar and Randy Orton GIF are a standout here. Kazuchika Okada when he won the IWGP Heavyweight Championship in February 2012 and Randy Orton when he fucking dumped one of the Singh Brothers on his fucking neck on the commentary table at Backlash 2017.

Call me a prude or a hater or whatever, but I think it may be a very good thing that the WWE has a no color policy for the women. ?

No, AEW is doing it the right way, very limited use of color for the ladies, just for feud blow-offs or other special situations. Someone in the vast array of people with their hands on the book understands that "less is more". Now if only that philosophy could be manifested throughout the show then you'd really have something. AEW's biggest problem right now is that they are too big for their TV time. There just isn't enough time to build compelling angles with their cast of thousands. I completely get why they will sign anyone with talent just to keep them from being ruined in McMahonland, the thing is that they are rapidly approaching 2000 WCW where you have guys sitting at home doing crossword puzzles pulling a nice paycheck because creative simply can't squeeze everyone into the TV time that they have unless they want to do a twenty-man battle royal to open the show every week.

That main event was amazing, nothing looked rehearsed or pretty, every spot looked like a real fight. Britt is specially great at the brawling between spots, every little kick she throws between big moves looked fierce. She did a quick curb stomp inside the ring without a lot of buildup which just looked nasty.

Obviously Baker looked amazing with the blood but Rosa had some next level facial expressions too, her eyes always look like they’re about to pop out from either rage or pain. Combined with the blood and her green/white attire she also looked great.

Only thing I wish is I was waiting for Britt to grab a handful of tacks before locking in her submission, it would have fit the moment so perfectly.

Apart from that, Penta got hit with a Canadian Destroyer, Springboard Cutter, Cross Rhodes and Vertabreaker in a row and kicked out but lost to the shittiest of sunset flips. I just don’t understand why Cody had to win this one tonight ?, but hey Penta just likes to have fun by the end *zero miedo taunt*

Spears would be better off as an "associate" of Pinnacle, always trying to be in the group, always getting his ass kicked for them, while they secretly laugh at him behind his back.

You've sold me on the concept of MJF convincing Spears he's the leader of the Pinnacle Black and White brand and spends the summer feuding with Stevie Ray, Scott Norton and Horace for the leadership.

Actually, I think I just want more Scott Norton more than anything.

How is it that Cody has such a great mind for the wrestling business except for the part about matches that he's in? My biggest fear about AEW appears to have quietly stolen up on us while we were paying attention to great matches the slimey spectres of egomania, nepotism, and general old school carnyism had quietly manifested themselves throughout  the executive vice-presidential team: The Bucks are once again the greatest tag-team in the universe, Cody Rhodes, ostensibly the face of the company gets himself a drunken biker tattoo in about the most conspicuous place possible and begins to book himself as unbeatable, the apple has not fallen very far from the tree, likely the only thing that prevents him from getting his own plane is the fact that they don't travel. Now that he has no one telling him to behave himself, Kenny Omega is totally free to do all the things that he enjoys: Making grotesque faces, admiring himself on the monitor, using finishing moves in the middle of a match and then not following up, thus rendering the move meaningless, in general acting like the nerdy goof that deep down inside  he actually is. Khan has a shit-ton of his dad's money to throw around and as we've been able to track his wrestling fandom, there's nothing to imply that this is a phase he's going through; no, this is a guy who has always wanted to run his own fed and now he can. He's already made the first move of doom, (appearing in an on-screen role), look for him to insert himself into a major angle sooner rather than later).

Continuing down the primrose path of a boy and his wrestling company we can see "legends" signed to contracts regardless of their (in)ability to actually work. Steve Borden is a "legend" to a certain group of people who were of a certain age when he spent most of his time sitting up in the rafters of the Omni or showing up at the ring to point at folks with a baseball bat. The facts are this: He's a year younger than I am (62) and certainly in much better shape, however, while folks have fond memories of his work in TNA, they seem to have forgotten his disastrous comebacks elsewhere. While he seems to be a good dude and I wish him well, the fact of the matter is that no one of his age with the amount of punishment that his body has taken should be seriously contemplating working even a light schedule as a professional wrestler. StIng is a major accident just waiting to happen and when it does, it won't be pretty for anyone involved.

As long as we're on the subject of guys who refuse to act their age, once again AEW makes a big deal out of signing Christian. I simply don't get it... The man is more Jeff Jarrett than Jeff Jarrett. If you have a TV Title, US Title, European Title, Western States Heritage Title or something like that to give your mid-card guys something to squabble over, you immediately give this prestigious belt to Christian so he can defend it on live TV at least once a month. The reality is this, as he approaches fifty, I think we can take a view of his career and draw certain conclusions. I don't think I've ever seen a bad Christian match that was his fault, for that matter he's pretty good at dragging a fairly decent match out of some real choads, it just happens that there are some goofs who are beyond even Christian's abilities to get anything decent from.

So that brings us to the faces of the company going forward: Hangman Page, Orange Cassidy, and Darby AlIin. I worry about the validity of a cowboy character in 2021, I hope I'm wrong because I like everything about this guy. I'm just afraid that the clipboard-carrying suits with their focus groups won't like him and will add to the difficulty of securing a good TV spot. Orange Cassidy... Okay, this was hysterical the first time we saw him. It was sort of silly and annoying the second or third time around. The gimmick moved into Henny Youngman territory the next time we saw it, now it's on the level of catchphrases like "I'm Rick James, bitch!" or "Where's the beef?" He's 35 oor thereabouts so there's no reason to think that he won't be doing this shtick for another twenty years. They have some other folks signed who have very interesting possibilities, but I'll cover them in another post.
