AEW Dynamite - 3/3/2021

I don't feel strongly either way about -1, but I can't hold it against them trying to help the kid cope through the worst months of his life.

I do think eventually it probably has to stop, but I wouldn't want to be the person making the decision of when that is.

Had zero interest in the opener, but fair play I was certainly sports entertained. Some clunky moments (to be expected really) but it really over delivered. Adding to the chorus of, "what was with the incredible disappearing Shaq?"

Tully looked like he wanted to be the third man in Private Party in his ring gear. Jungle Boy looks to be bulking up a bit too, Jr will loooove that.

Odd that Wardlow was behind Jericho, while P&P stood behind MJF during the presser.

Where does Brian Cage get his jeans? Truly horrifying!

Had a feeling 10 would lose due to TH2 shenanigans, I like the work they've been doing on the Hardy Page story. Same for the closing tag, nice story throughout of Hardy ducking Adam. Love the confused/happy faces from Page when Silver hugs him.

As of now, the HoF worthy signee and last ladder match entrant are theoretically not the same person.

Last guy in the ladder match and the debuting Hall of Famer are not necessarily the same person.

Fair enough. I lost track of what we were talking about.

We all kind of knew it, but it was cool to get verification that had Shaq decided to wrestle after retiring, he would had been incredible at it. Not surprising considering he's a crazy charismatic world class freak athlete giant, but yeah.

Also going back to Big Show as Mene Gene, I don't think wrestling (in kayfabe) has a Jay Glazer / Woj / Ken Rosenthal scoop guy character. I mean yeah Dave is that guy in the real world, but there's value in someone playing that role, 'leaking' signings and shit on pre-shows, and getting roughed up by heels to tell them who the secret third partner is or whatever.

Shaq great. Cargill great. Shame the narrative-lead up was such a flop because the final product was a lot of fun. Cargill should be the face of their women's division (also love her theme music - one of the rare good original creations).

Jeri/MJF conf. great. Forget any turns in this one now -- these two are in a different stratosphere to the Bucks talent-wise & golden together, get the titles on them now and figure out their turns/feuds down the road.

Someone already mentioned it but I could see Paul's surprise being RVD and RVD being in the ladder match as well.  Who else could it be? Not Taker, not Cena, not Punk, not Kane, nobody else really fits the AEW mold.

RVD is working on a WWE career documentary with them so I’d find that doubtful.

It’s definitely time for the Team Taz vs Sting and Darby story to end, but when it finally does, I’m really going to miss the way Ricky Starks says STINGERMAN every week.

I have a very strong feeling this whole thing ends up getting parlayed into a Starks/Darby singles match for the TNT title, we may not be done hearing it yet

I enjoy how he wasted no time in plugging Tacoma FD. I also could barely understand a word he said. Dude could have either just ended a 24 hour shift at the station or just woken up when he recorded that.

That plug killed me.

Where does the Shaq match rate as far as celebrity matches go? Or even on a Tom Magee miracle match scale?

Mayweather still the best. LT marginally better. Can't think of anything else as good.

Deangelo Williams in Impact.

If part of the role is getting roughed up by heels, I'm not sure Wight is the best casting.

AEW is running the risk of overexposing the casino battle royales.

I may be in the minority but AEW is really looking like they’re exploiting Brodie Lee’s son. I get having him on TV for the Brodie tribute show. To me, that should have been the end of it. But every subsequent -1 appearance feels like diminishing returns, and it’s getting more cringe. Maybe I’m wrong.

It's not wrong to think that as while I love seeing -1 there was a point where that was in the back of my mind.  Though if it helps when Amanda Huber was on their podcast she specifically pointed out that there's no exploitation whatsoever as she has final say.  If it works out and he wants to show up then he can have fun and take part in things.  And if there's one ounce of exploitation then she'll say so and that's it for him.  But considering how much they've been there for the family with her confirming as much I think it'll be fine.

And I don't think he's overexposed but it helps that he's not there every week.  As long as he doesn't detract from what Dark Order's doing then he's fine.  Heck, I even think his support made me like 10 more than before especially with lines like "This is what Hell looks like"  No matter what age that's a damn fine line to use and it was amusing seeing Taz lose his mind over that.

@EVA nailed it when he said the Cody/Velvet/Shaq/Jade match was like two separate matches.  As much as I kind of dislike intergender, I like mixed tags where you have to tag out if the other gender tags in even less.  It ruins the flow and you get stuff like Shaq tagging out and Cody running to his corner on his knees to tag out which looked ridiculous for a babyface.

I'm glad Jade hit her finisher!  She spammed taunts to fill her finisher bar the entire match so I'm glad it didn't go to waste.  It's like she watched early NXT Dana Brooke to prepare for this bout and was like, "she's good, but she should be taunting more."

Kudos the the 5th and 6th men in the match, Bryce Remsburg and whoever the director was.  Remsburg was directing traffic out there like crazy and the director was perfectly cutting on some really questionable strikes from both Jade and Velvet.

Cody's Hogan/Andre bodyslam moment was worse than the original WM3 slam.  Shaq earned points in my book for the Brodie Lee taunt before the power bomb.  Sweet.  That table bump was really well done, too.

Overall not a bad match at all.  I didn't think about the fact that they probably rehearsed and did all they could to make the match absolutely foolproof.

Shaq was too big for the ambulance and they visibly had him pull his feet up.  I LOL'd

Cody's tights look like he's wearing a codpiece.

Loved seeing Shaq lose his shit and beat up Billy Gunn's Silly Sons

Velvet murdered Cody on that Orihara Moonsault and missed Jade entirely

Overall, the match really over-delivered and everyone got together to spotlight strengths and hide weaknesses.  It wasn't Big Show/Mayweather but it was good.

Other thoughts:

RETURN OF PANTS-FREE JR WATCH: Marq Quen is bulking up and JR is half turgid.  20 more pounds and JR will be possessed by the spirit of THE BAH GAWD COWBOY and will demand they put the belt on him.

Between Jericho's Mr. Ray's Hair Weave and Santana's Jules Winfield tribute, the Inner Circle's hair game is insane.

Some nostalgia is fine.  Too much nostalgia and you start to look bush league. Tully?  Fine.  Tully, JJ, Arn, old belts, 4 Horsemen hand signs, Tony Schiavone, and the an appearance by Big Show, all in one segment, and then Sting later, is way too much.  Christ, JJ almost fell getting into the ring and they cut away to avoid showing him struggling to get back out of the ring.

To that end, I sincerely hope the big surprise isn't Kurt Angle, Christian, or some other old WWE guy.  AEW has enough of them and they're getting too dangerously close to TNA territory.  Remember when the sticking point for the Heyman to TNA discussions was that he only wanted one legend on the roster and Dixie wanted them all?  Yeah.

Conrad showed incredible restraint not having a savewithconrad.com logo on his jacket and/or not mentioning one of his HI-larious catchphrases.

"Jerking the curtain at the Performance Center!"  Damn.

Who wants Shawn Spears back?

The women's match was very good.  I'm very impressed with Nyla's selling outside of those goofy corner chops.  I loved the handshake and forearm smashes of mutual respect.  That was different.

It's way too early to start the Max Castor singles push.

I just gotta say for all the crap I talked about the shaq match, that was very good. I thought he was barely mobile and couldn’t take a bump but he looked great. The women looked great. That was a fun match, good job everyone.

So who kidnapped Shaq?

Shaq delivered the powerbomb fine, but Cody did undersell it.

As far as celebrity matches go, it did OK. I think Jade did alright since it was the first match of her career and she looks to be the attraction to push going forward, so it was good she won. Jade didn't blow me away, but I think she's got some potential and can be a real attraction.

Red Velvet held her end of the match up very well. Jade does clearly need more in-ring time though. However, the camera missing Red Velvet's spear was pretty WCW/WWE level stuff. I mean they were practically telegraphing it in the ring and still missed the spear.

I wasn't as enamored with the Tully match as everyone else. I'm glad there was a little moment with Arn just to come out and give a little kudos to his old crew. I'm glad Spears is back and he seems to be getting involved at least.
