Trying a do over would make things ten times worse. No way should that be an option. Besides, isn't tomorrow pretaped anyway?

Considering Christian is being advertised to make his Dynamite debut, I don’t think so.

I also don’t think they should redo the explosion idea but they could do something different, to get the Eddie Kingston storyline over if they had major plans for it.

Otherwise, hopefully they just do something crazy in a good way that will gets fans talking about something else in a positive way.

I also don't think coming out and apologizing for it works either. That's such a breaking down of the 4th wall that I don't want to see it.

Apologising for it is not an option...

I don't really see it as breaking the 4th wall, and I can't understand why it wouldn't be an option.

I mean, coming out and apologizing that there were run-ins in every match or some of the matches were booked to go too long? Explaining that "We need to get Mox off TV for a while because his wife is having a baby"? That would be breaking the 4th wall. But I think you can reasonably just say 'We are sorry the big explosion was a dud" while maintaining kayfabe.

It's too late to try and spin it as the result of Omega's heelish scheming. We all saw what happened, we all know the Funk vs Onita story they were trying to tell with Kingston saving Mox. Trying to spin it as anything other than a failure is insulting our intelligence.

This is a great opportunity for AEW to once again demonstrate that they have more respect (or, less contempt) for their audience than the "competition."

I can remember Dana f'n White (of all people) coming out after a disappointing-to-many Spider Silva title defense and owning up that it was not an exciting fight and apologizing for it.

He and the UFC have long since pissed away the goodwill that generated but it did generate a lot of good will at the time, and aligned White as a man of the people and a fellow fan. It was good PR. A smart decision.

All Tony K (and/or Mix or King) needs to do is come out and admit that the big explosion at the end didn't go as planned. Promise to make up for it. Have Mox and Kenny fight again, all bandaged up, without the gimmicks.

All will be forgiven (excepting, of course, the haters).

Still better than the Snyderverse.

Oh fucking hell, I've lurked in the DC movies thread long enough that this line here killed me laughing myself hoarse

I like Snyder so I'm not taking up against Niners but goddamn this just had to get some appreciation for such a deep callback hahahaha.

Well done sir?

Getting on topic, some footage of Nakazawa fumbling around ringside up to hijinks could maybe, not entirely, help offset things if they go in that direction.

Yet to watch this, but I do feel like hyping up a new signing for a PPV instead of TV, was that maybe the first misstep? Not even getting into HoF worthy yet, but hey we got a new signing we'll announce on ppv just... feels off? Most signings are quick to go up on Twitter, will announcing during a ppv actually add buys?

I mean sure, they can apologise that their fake-fireworks were not as big as the fake-fireworks should have been, but yeah you're breaking the 4th wall in the process. Then they'd also better expect no one to ever take a grittier portrayal seriously again & might as well 'fess up directly that everything is just staged. You show respect for your audience by not fucking things up, and not repeatedly making snake-oil-salesmen hype claims on Twitter or otherwise that come to absolute naught. Let's see if they've learned, or if they go back to that same well.

0 room for comparison between a kayfabe-wrestling promotion completely fluffing production & Dana apologising for Silva running around non-participating in a live MMA fight. Dana is also just an absolute different universe as a promoter .. there is no remote comparison in the history of UFC production to Sunday night.

Most of this show felt like almost everything went five minutes too long. And there was way too much interference throughout the night.

The preshow match was good. Maki Itoh got a bigger pop than the other two surprises. Thunder Rosa is awesome.

Bucks/Jericho-MJF didn't feel like the teams were on the same page. The match overstayed its welcome. I'm beyond the Bucks playing tough guys. They want to avenge their father--by having any other match they do flipping instead of fighting when the story calls for the latter. They did set up for the Inner Circle breakup on Wednesday if they want to do it.

The Casino Tag Team Royale had too many bodies to keep up, but there were some quality spots. QT Marshall went heel, and I found myself shrugging. The Evil Uno-Marko Stunt spot was hilariously bad. Jungle Boy looked good throughout. Bucks vs Death Triangle should be entertaining.

Shida vs Ryo had a lot going on. Good striking/kicks and they did a solid job of telling their story but again, it went too long. Setting up a six-woman tag for Dynamite was fine.

Miro-Sabian/OC-Chuck happened. Lasted eight minutes and somehow that was too much time. Let's forget it happened and not speak of it again. I don't care about them rebuilding Miro.

Page/Hardy was fine enough. I think they made it something respectable toward the end. But it could have easily been done on an episode of Dyanmite. Tell me if I've said this already, but it was too long! Dark Order coming in worked here, probably the one time during the night where interference made sense for me.

The ladder match was (holds nose). Ethan Page as the surprise was lukewarm. There was no flow with this match and having no flyers hurt a lot. Archer stuck in the ladder was offensive in how he just laid there, waiting for the next spot. Cody doing the super-resilient babyface spot was rightfully booed. Go to the back and THEN do the run-in. Being on camera the whole time was ridiculous. Had guys killing themselves and get no shine because we had to ask "What about Cody?" seemingly forever. Scorpio Sky won a gold Lifesaver which was a dumb brass ring joke. A total mess.

Christian being the new AEW guy is fine. They would have been better off not announcing the 'big name' beforehand, but it's OK. There are a lot of matches there for him. But within two weeks, they've brought in Christian, Paul Wight, and Ethan Page. None of them are going to set AEW on fire. They're already short on time for the women and younger guys. I realize they're expanding their YT presence and eventually will have a second TV show. So is it a matter of splitting the roster or spreading out the veterans? Who are they going to hold off on PPVs for Sting, Christian, Jericho, Matt Hardy et al? Even Wight and Taz need focus as big-name commentators, especially with Taz being in charge of a faction. Finding a balance seems tough.

The street fight was beautifully shot. It felt like a scene from Sin City. Half expected Batman to swoop in. They had a clear jump cut when "Sting" did a sunset flip that was a body double. Bringing in Sting so early, it felt anticlimactic. My biggest gripe is the commentary. It wasn't necessary. Just stick with the music. Well done as far as cinematic matches go.

The main event! The match was presented as properly dangerous. I liked Mox's Onita-inspired jacket. They beat the stuffing out of each other. Mox kicking the wire to break up the One-Winged Angel was cool, as was the loaded bat spot. The barbed-wire ring was so-so. Needed to take down the ring ropes to give a better look, but it wasn't too bad. The explosives on the floor were laughable and was where the match started to wane for me. The Good Brothers coming out was expected, but eyerolling. Like someone (Goodyear, maybe?) mentioned, why didn't Mox better prepare for that? Kingston coming out to save Mox was FANTASTIC. Had the explosion gone off as planned, it would have been incredible. But, oh boy.

Stuff happens, no matter how much you plan. If it was indeed a dud explosive, that's too bad. But they got too cute for their own good. That can't be ignored. What are we supposed to do with this? Mox and Omega got cut up, dropped on their heads and electrocuted for nothing. Kingston looks like a goof trying to save his friend from a sparkler attack. Excalibur's commentary was a through-the-looking-glass moment.

No one reasonable thinks AEW will go into the tank over it. But my word, it's going to leave a bruise for the near future. I would say ignore it and move on. But they've talked about it during their post-show presser already. Maybe they can do something with it, but Khan kind of screwed that up with all his chatter that just adds to the confusion.

A very messy show nearly top to bottom.

During the Tonys paid ad on Impact, Tony K said Kenny is terrible at building exploding rings, put the focus on finding out why Eddie did what he did, and mentioned the exploding ring wasn't enough to seriously harm either man. I liked it. They also set up Kenny defending against the winner of Swann vs. Moose on Impact PPV next month.

1:37 for the Kenny bit.

Not bad. Didn't apologize, as such, but he acknowledged it. I could live without the "It's All Kenny's Fault" storyline but don't feel like our intelligence is being insulted here. I'm quite willing to wait and see where they take it next.

All it will take are awesome promos from Moxley and Kingston and everyone will easily move on from this.

...although, I imagine, it's going to live on as kind of a "Shockmaster" moment.

I think Kenny needs to visit Impact and have a feud with Rich Swann.  They had that tag match in January so it would make sense for those two to have something going.  And since the door's open that's something that could play out on AEW as well if they choose.  Plus it would mean no gimmick matches needed which would be nice.  Barring that there's always a feud with whoever's next up in the rankings.  But for whichever way they go they need to get that rolling at full steam tomorrow and do their best to move on.  And I say that because I have a feeling that there will be people hanging onto this for some time despite the company's intentions so the sooner people talk about something else the better.

Ah, fuck it you know what'll get people to shutup about it?  Just bring in a big name from New Japan (quarantine and all) and get a feud going.  I might be mostly joking but if they went through with let's say Omega/Suzuki then that would do wonders.

This is going to happen now from the sounds of it.

I think the only way out of this is to put the blame on Winnipeg not teaching you had to build a deathmatch ring, Kingston going after Kenny for embarassing him, have Mox get taken out by Ricky Starks, and try to get past this ASAP.

I do think AEW lost some goodwill from this, but they have enough banked that it will be forgiven as long as they don't screw something else up in the near future.  No more exploding rings though- and fewer gimmick/ultraviolence matches in general.  AEW doesn't need to feed the ghouls and vampires- they should have been packing with Jimmy Havoc.  If you need a blowoff match, stick to a cage, ironman, or I quit match.

Another easy 'out' for the did explosion - Have it revealed that Kenny was worried he might lose. That he feared what Moxley would do to him so he wimped out on the gimmick.

Then you can have the Club take out Mox on Dynamite, and redo the match (this time built by Jon/Eddie) when Mox gets back or at Revolution 2022.

Everything was too damn long for no reason.

Pure wrestlecrap at the end.

You've reminded about a topic I've had an idea on, time management. The best matches using the time right to those overlong, overdone.

Yeah, I think AEW has adopted too many of PWG's lesser qualities. They go 5-10 minutes too long all the time now. Not everything can be a raga.

I fully expect there to be an underwhelming explanation on Dynamite when their best route is to ignore it entirely.

STOP CATERING TO PEOPLE WHO ARE ALREADY WATCHING. I guaran-goddamn-tee that there will be some smarky bullshit that will pop some people here (somehow) but be ultimately garbage. I don't want some celebrity-laden crap to bring in casual fans but there are other ways.

I won't be surprised if Dynamite opens with a promo about how underwhelming the explosion was. Because WE'RE ON THE INTERNETS LOLZ

Trash.

I mean... Sting, The Giant, Jericho, Christian, Taz, Arn, Tully, Jake... these guys were not signed for the people already watching, dude.

For better or worse, this is the first PPV since original Double or Nothing to garner 30 pages of discussion. I mean sure, a lot of it is critical, but there is more discussion and therefore interest than there has been in a good while. And it seems that there are people taking part in this discussion that I haven't seen before or in a good while, so that tells you something as well. Even if most of this crew is among those who are "already watching".

I don't think any publicity is good publicity. My guess is the buy rate was higher for this show than any recent ppv and that will not be the case for Double or Nothing. I've talked to friends who watched it and all of us felt burned.
