The Action Cartoons Thread

Unrelated to the controversy I realized why the Batman costume looks awful in this...they based it off the recoloured version from a few years back which inexplicably swapped out the yellow oval but didn't resize the Bat to reflect the lack of space now filled in the centre. It looks too small because it's not meant to be the whole logo and whoever recoloured it didn't fix that when they removed the logo...which is dumb.

Transformers: Combiner Wars finally launched today, so long after being announced I had honestly forgotten it.  Someone on twitter compared it to GI Joe: Resolute, in that it's almost comedically "grown up" in its brutality, and cut up into very short segments. The difference is that Resolute had a big animation budget, legendary voice talent and Warren Ellis writing. If ep 1 is any indication, TFCW will make Resolute look like Watchmen.

Resolute was good for what it was.  It had like all the classic GI Joe characters, but people could actually get stabbed and shot in this version.  It starts with Cobra Commander pretty much nuking Moscow into ash and butchering 10 million people.

I love the humor in having the actor who played Lex Luthor on Smallville doing the voice for the Flash on JLU and thne having Luthor and Flash swap bodies

I mean, the two shows launched the same year so it's total coincidence but using it that way is definitely funny.

Incidentally it was weirdly difficult to check the voice actor for Flash's Superman TAS appearance but it was a different guy, which I guess has led to spec that it wasn't Wally even though it clearly was.

IIRC the writer of the episode even said in an interview "we were asked not to give him a name, but he's based on Wally."  Interestingly enough, both Charlie Schlatter and Michael Rosenbaum would go on to play Barry in one-offs later (the former on "The Batman" and the latter in JUSTICE LEAGUE: DOOM).

Watched the new Voltron on netflix over the past two days. I either never saw or don't remmeber much of the previous serie sso I don't really have anything to compare it to per say. I found Lance annoying. Keith was under developed. Pidge was ok save for one particular episode where I wanted to strangle her. Hunk was decent as well save for the messed up, unnecessary invasions of Pidge's privacy that were played up for laughs, but made want to strangle him as well. I think Shiro, Allura, & Coran were the only ones I actively liked character wise. I think they need to balance the comedy a little better as more than few times I found the moments more annoying than amusing. I also thought there were some annoying moments of plot induced stupidity. Pidge's big episode in particular made her look like a moron and a bit of an asshole. For something with so few episodes I thought the series moved a bit slow as well. Considering how big things were sort of going I'm not sure the cliffhanger they ended with was the best idea either. The ideas was nice and should feel like a big deal, but It felt strangely small compared to what already had been happening. Feels like a calmer ending would have been the better move for a least this first season. Overall, I think it was a decent enough show, but there is plenty of room for improvement. I think I will go ahead and push my older brother to check it out. He is the bigger Voltron fan and easier to please than myself.

I can somewhat see that but can't really agree. He was kind of dumb and comedy focused, but he used his knowledge well, played a good support for Allura & co., and his occasional stupidity never seemed to show in or lead to deadly situations unlike the others.

"Since I'm in his body, I may as well learn his true identity."

Pulls off mask to reveal Wally's face

"I have no idea who this is."

My other problem is that how would Shiro not know about Pidge being the daughter of the family he was escorting in space?  I know Pidge was in disguise, but it wasn't that great of a disguise either.

That bothered me as well. Pidge's disguise was fine. You wouldn't know its her unless you knew about her brother. That of course if also why it was sort of dumb that Shiro didn't recognize her earlier than he did. I get maybe the first day or two where his brain is a bit scrambled, but after that it really made no sense.

It's tough to say, because Young Justice and Green Lantern were both great and kinda short shrifted (at least GL saw it coming). Beware the Batman got terrific too but after like episode 7 good luck watching it. I have the DVDs and it honestly might be my second favourite Batman series behind TAS, though that's counting New Batman Adventures as the same show and BatB could have an argument depending on my mood that day. Anyway, it's a shame the last few non TTG projects got kneecapped so badly.

Comic Book Resources has just ranked the ten best DC animated series:

http://www.comicbookresources.com/article/best-dc-comics-animated-series-ranked/view=all

I'd go:

1. Batman: The Animated Series.

2. Justice League.

3. Batman of the Future.

4. Batman: The Brave and the Bold.

5. Teen Titans GO!

For me it wold be

1. Justice League

2. BTAS

3. Batman Beyond

4. Young Justice

Its gets tougher for me around 5 and down. I dug Beware the Batman, but never loved it. I think Teen Titans has some strong arcs in a few of the seasons but lacking on the whole. Green Lantern was good, but short lived and not on the level as say YJ which lasted about as long and took way less time to get going. I never saw all of BTATB though I liked what I saw. The Batman has interpretations I don't like but a shockingly good-great third and fourth season.

It is nice to see someone else besides Jingus and myself who dig TTG.
