2021 Discussion about Wrestling Podcasts

pre-9/11 airplane/airport security being what it was.. I can believe that. If the Sheik was flying cross-country for a match, one would wonder if he would fly as Edward Farhat from Michigan and how much he would fly as "A. Sheik" who openly carries sharp objects onto a plane because it was allowed in 1970.

Cornette mentioned quite a bit about the flight etiquette of wrestlers and I suspect some of his aversion to flying involves the fact that a lot of his flights have involved the suspicion that if he falls asleep, some wrestler is gonna pull some prank on him. (Of course the standard of conduct was a little different between commercial flights and the Crockett Jet.. and he actually mentions liking being able to see the pilot from his seat)

Can I get some decent wrestling podcast recommendations?  I recently stopped my F4W/WON subscription because I'm cutting costs and paying off debt.  The only one I've recently looked into that I like has been We Watch Wrestling with Matt McCarthy and Vince Averill.

What I like right now so far: the aforementioned We Watch Wrestling, Wrestling Anonymous (Colt), Marty & Sarah Love Wrestling

What I tried and didn't like too much: Deadlock (too many inside jokes for me to get into, they seem like a bunch of young stoners enjoying it more than I am), Post Wrestling (I just can't get into dry recaps with little to no personality).

What I'm really just not into: Anything longer than maybe an hour and 45.  Even that's pushing it.  Like I heard Between the Sheets is decent but, holy shit, some episodes are like SIX HOURS long.

Any suggestions?  Thanks in advance!

I like AEW Unrestricted, even though I am not a massive AEW fan. Most episodes only go 45 minutes, and Tony and Aubrey are great hosts.

If you can handle listening to Disco Inferno, Keepin It 100 with Konnan is good too. They discuss current wrestling, sports, pop culture and politics.

I really like Zellner on BTS, but those shows are very long. I can listen to them all day at work, so it is tolerable for me. Another plus is that the episodes discuss things that happened long ago, so you don't really need to keep up to date with your listening habits. The episodes where Zellner and Rob Naylor go through old PWI magazines are shorter, and more fun.

listening to the Tony Khan episode of Phil's book podcast, and yeah, the AEW title is very obviously modeled on the Mid-South North American Title (Tony mentions liking that North American title belt)

the concept of a major wrestling promotion ran by a dude that's 3 years older than me who was tapetrading in the 90s is kinda wild to think about, to be honest

Frankly, it just makes me angry at my father that he is not a billionaire.

So I finally listened to both episodes of Art of Wrestling where Punk was the guest, how do two guys who were THAT tight, stop speaking to each other. I can’t fathom why Punk would supposedly offer to pay for something and then not do it. This all happened during the period where my fandom had lapsed so I’m clueless if there was more to it than that.
Also, now that they’re all available again, any episodes of AOW. I should seek out?

Check out the Lance Archer one. Very insightful, and intelligent. Avoid all the ones that have old vets in them. They don’t really give Colt anything. Stick to modern wrestlers, and indies wrestlers from the past two decades.

Same!  I just re-listened to both a few weeks ago, right around the time Punk came back.  Like you said, they sounded so tight, and it was so sad to listen to.  I think Punk told Colt that he had nothing to worry about as far as paying for the defense went, but then Colt had to hire his own lawyer for some reason and both guys had different ideas about who would pay that guy, then Punk blew up because Colt visited friends at a WWE show, and then somehow they sued each other maybe?  I can't even remember but it ended up with Colt in a ton of debt.

My only guess is that Punk was just mentally in a really bad place and probably acted in a way that I hope he regrets now.  I sincerely hope they work their shit out.

As far as episodes to check out, I just relistened to the Tommy End episode (Malakia Black) and that was decent, especially the parts about essentially growing up in a weird religious cult.  Off the top of my head, I also recommend:

  • Any episode with Cliff Compton
  • Pac (great episode with a great story behind it.  Pac did a whole interview with Colt and afterwards, they talked and Pac felt bad about not really opening up and suddenly started talking about all his insecurities, so they went back and re-did it)
  • Tommaso Ciampa
  • Kevin Steen: pre WWE back in the day before WWE went on the indy hiring spree, where Steen says he knows what he needs to do to get there (lose weight and get jacked), but isn't so sure he really wants it
  • Marty DeRosa: discussions about comedy and wrestling, and some really fun stories.
  • Truth Martini, just for the amazing story of Truth frantically trying to get into Canada for a show

I'm sure there are tons more I'm forgetting.  I'll update as they come to me.

Punk is ultra protective of himself and his family when it comes to money. I don't think Colt was trying to do anything malicious and I wouldn't be surprised if Punk was maybe giving him mixed signals when it comes to covering Colt's fees and how much he would cover.

What really sent things over the edge was Colt suing Punk. That may have landed Colt on Punk's shitlist for life, but who knows. History is littered with best friends who had an awful falling out because of a girl/guy or money and then they reconcile later.

I would say the regal aow was the one that got me to go back thru the archives.   Cliff Compton in Nigeria I think is a must listen.  If you never heard the mvp casino heist story, colt is the first place I heard it and it is also fascinating.

Is there a Cliff Notes version somewhere? That podcast is almost 6 hours long.

John Arezzi wanted to do a show with Conrad Thompson, and Brian Last got jealous, so Brian Last kicked him off.

Ron Fuller 1) wasn't paying Last his cut of the profits of the show, 2) wanted to use footage of the show with folks Last didn't want to, and 3) was (insert Desus and Mero "allegedly" graphics here) beating his girlfriend, which horrified both Last and the producer of the show. Last claims the third reason is why the show was cancelled, but he had already decided to fire him beforehand.

Additional information: According to Last, he made it clear to Arezzi that he wasn't going to keep Arezzi if he was going to work with Thompson. He also gave him time to decide if he wanted to commit to the podcast and when he didn't commit after a set deadline, kicked him off.
