2021 Puroresu General Discussion

When covid is over with hopefully, lot of these top promotions (NJPW, Dragongate, lesser AJPW) will be very profitable. Others will carry on breaking even or have money backers to prop themselves up. Some like BJW and Zero 1 will carry on somehow regardless if they're losing money. Those really smaller local indys don't have much to worry about.

CyberFight brands will have the usual slow growth but I wouldn't be surprised if they further changed up their business with more restructuring. Their combined ltd was established in 2020 while the old ones were ended, they left their old debts behind.

You can tell those final 4 are the top guys these days in AJPW.

Spoiler

Still doubt someone as small as Ashino is ever winning the Triple Crown title. Then again Tajiri is booking nowadays..

I still don't think Ashino's size is that much of a detriment. They've kept him near the title picture since he first arrived and he's pretty buff for a short guy. Truthfully I didn't even think of him as being especially small until it was brought up on this board. Mutoh almost certainly would have eventually put the TC on Kaz if they hadn't all jumped ship, so I don't see it as a deal where only bruisers ever get the TC. I see Ashinoe going to the final here just to keep him strong, and possibly winning? It seems awfully soon to already go back to Jake vs Ashino, especially if Jake is just gonna best him again (and I REALLY hope they aren't going to hot potato the title off Jake so soon considering its his first reign, unless it's with the purpose of him asserting his dominance by regaining the title in a non-3 way batch...see below for my preferred hypothetical scenario along this line).

They really should have just removed a few guys from the brackets and given Suwama an automatic bye to the semis. He never lost the title in the first place, was only out for a few weeks, and was on the tail end of his monster run when he got sick. Honestly, I could see a good argument in having him win, beat Jake, and then lose the title back to Jake in a couple months just to really establish Jake as a Miyahara-style champ who always gets his win back right away. Similarly, he beat Miyahara in the triangle match after Miyahara had already gone a long time with Aoyagi. There's gotta be interest in a Jake/Miyahara showdown where Jake proves his win wasn't a fluke by defeating a "fresh" Miyahara

This GLEAT card looks swell:

Glad Ayato Yoshida is getting so much work outside of 2AW. Dude is too talented to be wrestling in front of 86 people.

Jesus Christ, Kawakami, T-HAWK and frickin Ryo Mizunami?  It's my fucking dream card.

GLEAT is weird because they seem like an event company, where each card is special. And yet they’ve got big names—just a very talented smell cadre of regulars.

Wow, Minoru Tanaka is wrestling Koji Iwamoto and that's gonna be a bit confusing to watch.

And the winner of AJPW’s Oudou tournament is

Spoiler

SUWAMA!

Not terribly exciting, since he certainly didn’t need a win to justify a TC challenge, but I guess this way he comes in with momentum and it’s not just a perfunctory match. Lee beating him will seem a bigger accomplishment.

I know wrestling Twitter likes to complain about Ashino’s record in AJ, but since debuting less than 2 years ago he’s beaten every heavyweight but Suwama in singles matches.

As long as Lee beats him clean then I'm fine with this. I think he will. Ashino seems to have Suwama as his final road block. I could see them meet in the CC Finals in a year. They were supposed to be forming a team, them vs NEXTREAM would be a fun direction.

From Suwama’s Twitter:

Anyway, a wrestler named Ashino resonates with my heart! !!
 He's a great man.
Let's go to the World Tag Team Championship together this time.
