Cobra Commander Posted January 18 Posted January 18 watching a Midnight Special episode from 1974 where Barry White is looking majestic, conducting the Orchestra, sweating, and being awesome https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dykRco1YtqQ 5
zendragon Posted January 18 Posted January 18 Between the hair and the sparkly jacket I'm tempted to say this is when culture peaked 2
supremebve Posted January 18 Posted January 18 I remember when I was a kid in the 80s, there seemed to be a consensus that the 70s music sucked. I really need to know why there was a huge backlash against the time when a bunch of virtuoso musicians got handed full orchestras to make pop music. 1
odessasteps Posted January 18 Posted January 18 Cultural biases against disco is prob a logical part of it. 4
Curt McGirt Posted January 18 Posted January 18 I don't know, have you really sat around and listened to shit like Tales from Topographic Oceans? Even as a prog fan I can't stomach that.
zendragon Posted January 19 Posted January 19 And what a cool name for a band Love Unlimited Orchestra! 1

Curt McGirt Posted January 19 Posted January 19 Hell, I love Yes. But that album is the shits. Really I kind of misread the question, "orchestras used to make pop music" is definitely more focused at disco and R&B, unless you really hate the Moody Blues (I'm on the fence myself. Sgt. Pepper's was responsible for a lot of that, eventually evolving into prog itself). The truth is every new generation is gonna shit on the music right before it, or at least in the '80s that was inevitable with the rise of either really stripped-down and postmodern music (hardcore and post-punk) or nouveau stuff (heavy metal, hip hop, New Wave, '80s pop). It was a sea change.
Curt McGirt Posted January 20 Posted January 20 Seeds were busted up the spine... How come that is the only Monster Magnet album I can get into?

They had a good 5 album run where they were firing on all cylinders. Lost a lot of time with them and Lake of Tears back 10-15 years ago. Seems like another life.
Curt McGirt Posted January 21 Posted January 21 I don't mind 25... Tab, but I bought Superjudge and immediately thought it was weak sauce. I'm not a stoner rock guy though, I'm a doom head. Kyuss is about as far as I go in that direction.
zendragon Posted January 21 Posted January 21 Robbie Krieger is going to be playing 5 doors albums in full over 5 nights at the Whisky A GoGo

Death From Above Posted January 22 Posted January 22 Powertrip is a fucking amazing album and I'm glad Monster Magnet made a ton of money off it. 2

Monster Magnet is a name I've been familiar with but can't recall actually listening to. Is that the best spot to start?
Cobra Commander Posted January 23 Posted January 23 Listening to an American Top 40 episode where Casey mentions a controversy over the song "Shot People" by Randy Newman Quote CASEY: "But the critics aren't hearing what the song is actually about" ME: "Because they're too short" 1
