JANUARY 2021 Discussion of Wrestling

So Elayna Black/ Cora Jade is making her WWE debut on 205Live tonight, but apparently up until yesterday she was still booked on GCW's 24 hour show next weekend. Against Joey Janela.

If you wanted to get conspiracy theory-ish, you could suggest that WWE moved her debut up to prevent her from doing the GCW show...

I need to keep reminding myself of something Lance Storm said on a podcast a few months ago: that you shouldn't criticize a wrestler for going to this company or that company because you don't know what their options were and what offers were or weren't on the table when they made the decision.  Like I'm ready to say, "why does anyone go work for WWE when 98 times out of 100 they'll just languish for a few years and waste their careers?" but then I realize people need to make money and there may not have been another option outside of jobbing to Jimmy Lloyd in shitty deathmatches.

100%.

We should mainly just criticize them for their ringwork.

Especially in comparative form.

With polls.

I just read about NHL likely being moved to USA network by the end of the year. If they take NXTs slot I think WWE would rather that be the reason they stop going head to head with Dynamite then being force to because of viewership

Just added to WWE's YouTube. Enjoy everyone. The best Royal Rumble match of all time, Ric Flair going an hour and the best commentary to any match ever by Bobby The Brain Heenan/Gorilla Monsoon. *****.

https://www.cnn.com/2021/01/22/media/nbc-sports-network-shut-down/index.html

Spitballing here, but if theoretically one of these sports properties catches on big with USA, for example NASCAR or something, are Raw/NXT in trouble come renegotiation time if they're no longer the top shows on the network? I'm not hoping for it or anything, I'm just nterested in TV and sports TV stuff like this outside of wrestling.

Dave Meltzer on WrestleMania XXVII. In spoiler tags for size:

Spoiler

A report by Dave Meltzer in the new issue of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter explains why the direction for the top matches at WrestleMania 37 remains unclear:

The reason there has been no television direction for the main matches at Mania and you don’t hear anything about them is because there isn’t any. The only thing we know is the top Raw championship matches are not locked in. On SmackDown, Reigns has two different opponents that are being considered so Bryan is not a lock and at least as of this past week, Nakamura was not one of the two under consideration as of last week, even after the gauntlet. Then again, if you followed the Kingston deal a few years ago if they sense people want something, it’s possible to change and in fact, plans change daily anyway. But with no crowds, while plans will change, the change to Nakamura in that spot is less likely but nothing is impossible.

Meltzer also reports that as of earlier this week, WWE is planning for an attendance of 30,000 on each night of WrestleMania 37:

Inside WWE, the plan looks to be to put 30,000 people in the building both nights. If the Super Bowl puts in more, they’ll likely put in more. But that was the legit goal as of early in the week. What they’ll announce is anyone’s guess. The shows will likely be four-and-a-half hours with the first match going in the ring at 5:30 p.m. and the targeted ending at 10 p.m. The Tokyo Dome did two five hour shows. The second day was tough, as it was last year, and as it was to a degree with WrestleMania last year, but in the long run it was the best for all concerns. Right now it doesn’t look like that will be the plan going forward, but two shows at four-and-a-half hours leads to better matches and longer matches and higher quality shows than one at seven. Plus there is more money to be made. In the past you could argue it would break tradition or it just wouldn’t work, but New Japan has proven two years running that it does.

WWE announced last weekend that WrestleMania 37 will be held on Saturday, April 10 and Sunday, April 11 at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida. It was also revealed that WrestleMania 38 is scheduled for April 3, 2022 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas and WrestleMania 39 is set for April 2, 2023 in Inglewood, California at SoFi Stadium

---

Any guesses for WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns opponent? I think Daniel Bryan is the most likely. Really don't want to see Reigns vs. Brock Lesnar or Seth Rollins again. Reigns vs. Edge? Spear vs. Running Hug. Read Edge's rehab for his injury isn't going good. Reigns vs. Bryan is the match I want to see the most then Reigns/Cesaro, Reigns/Big E and Reigns/Nakamura. Like to think Drew McIntyre walks into WrestleMania XXXVII as WWE Champion and doesn't drop it to Goldberg at the Royal Rumble next week. Just have to wait to see who wins the Royal Rumble match and the Elimination Chamber match.

One alleged twat in one state doesn't besmirch the entire charity, IMO. Unless there's other examples of this I'm unaware of.. then I'm all ears. Make-A-Wish(at least seemingly) does a lot of great things for those who could use it probably more than anybody else.

it's annoying when that happens, WWE on FOX twitter is guilty of that.

Here you go, Adam and to Americans here:

Fucking vicious chop by WALTER.

I know Shawn and Hunter think the World of WALTER but I wonder what Vince thinks of him. I imagine he'd be losing his shit over him, we atleast in the previous eras. Even with all his upside I'd still be nervous about how he'd be used on the main roster, just based off how a guy like Keith Lee has been booked.

Happy 62nd birthday to overall good guy Akira Maeda.

For all his flaws, he's one of the biggest stars of Japanese wrestling/combat sports that hardly anybody in the West gives too much of a shit about. A pioneer of sorts in terms of MMA too and an absolutely great wrestler. He's way more than kicking Choshu in the face and fucking w/ Andre.

Didn't WALTER only sign with the WWE under the condition he wouldn't be moved to the main roster?
