DECEMBER 2020 WRESTLING TALK.

Recommended Posts

It's hard to want to go back to wrestling talk when the way back in is Jim Cornette talking about Bray Wyatt, but I'll try to stay on topic.

EDIT: It took me this long to get that Sister Abigail is a somewhat oblique reference to The Stand, which is kinda cool: Bray Wyatt as Randall Flagg, with his own warped, evil version of the goodness that is Mother Abigail as exemplified in his finishing move.

That's a pretty high-end reference wrapped into his character, at least for pro wrestling. Dude is definitely very creative.

Here's some wrestling talk: Wrestlers wearing short trunks without kneepads is the worst.  Just way too much exposed leg for my taste.  I'll make an exception for Masa Fuchi, but that's it.

The worst of the worst was Nakajima's kickpads-with-no-kneepads look.  Truly awful.

See how Dynamite is delayed by like 2 and a half hours tonight? Is there anything good announced for NXT, or is it a night off type of thing? Are Shotzi or Timmo booked?

Bray Wyatt is going to be a weird career retrospective to do someday. I was at Target a few months ago and saw him on the cover of the SummerSlam dvd. I know I watched that show but I do not recall it at all. Just a long, uninteresting career. He should just be a manager.

I find Cornette to be a misogynistic, racist a hole most of the time but I mean, he's not wrong about Bray. Stopped clock and all that.

Bray, like Seth Rollins, was better off working six-man tags his whole career. He's only had one singles match that I'd consider great, against D-Bry at the Rumble, and based on the rest of the existing evidence, I give all credit for that to D-Bry doing some "carrying a broomstick" magic.

"Bring me the head of the Pumpkin King." - Bray in his next gimmick as a race car driver based on that stupid description they always gave him as Husky Harris, while he listens to David Bowie.

I just have to share this nugget from reddit about Moxley not defending the IWGP US Heavyweight title..

Quote

If NJPW worked it out with Japan's ambassador to the US, could Moxley defend the title at the embassy? He'd only have to come to DC, and it's technically Japanese soil

That sounds like a Dusty gimmick. "Per NWA rules as this match technically ended in a 3 count on Canadian soil, and therefore is unsanctioned by the NWA, the Minnesota Wrecking Crew retain!"

Well, I know that wrestling matches held on military bases are not under the jurisdiction of the state athletic commissions. That was a loophole in MD so they could get away with stuff without a penalty from the notoriously stringent officials.

Caesaro when he debuted and Booker trying to explain those...straps were due to him being a rugby player.

Yes they do.

Was Antonio Cesaro originally Italian?

His Italian background has never been acknowledged. Originally Swiss, then he was pseudo-German for about two months.

16th in the World. Only seven places behind Wales. A country that has less than 1% of the USA's population.

That's not playing Rugby. That's trying to play Rugby, and failing.

Switzerland are ranked 28th...

Listened to a podcast Dennis Rivera and Joe Don Smith. Dennis is Savio Vega's younger brother as I mentioned previously and JDS is a former Puerto Rican manager and wrestling personality. It maybe my favorite podcast Dennis has taped.

Spoiler

JDS grew up in New York and he got signed by the Dodgers and some other MLB teams and he played in the minor leagues. He met Dick Murdoch while playing in the minor leagues. Murdoch was a big baseball fan and he frequented games JDS played in and that's how they met. However he never visited Puerto Rico and Murdoch was already doing tours over there with WWC. They kept in touch and JDS went to PR on vacation and they met up and Murdoch told him he wanted to break him into the business. They arranged meeting up at the hotel where Murdoch was staying along with the other foreigners, but Murdoch had already left and JDS met some of the other foreigners who told him Murdoch had told them to break him into the business.

When Murdoch returned, JDS was his manager for a bit. Dennis comments on Murdoch's racisms and JDS says he got a ton of heat as Murdoch was very vocal. He told a story about meeting the Harris Brothers and they asking around for JDS. When they met JDS, they saw he was a Nuyorican and told him he either was the coolest person Murdoch had met or Murdoch had changed his views.

JDS said his first match was a tag match with Murdoch taking on Carlos Colón and Invader #1. Murdoch told him not to worry as he would carry the match and that they had to both get juice, but that he would blade him so he wouldn't have to do it himself.

Since he had gotten a $300K a year contract with minor league teams, he had money saved up, so making money in wrestling wasn't a top priority for him at the time. Victor Jovica and Carlos had already fallen back on his payment and they owed him about $300 and they told him they would pay him next Tuesday, but JDS told them not to worry about that and that they should use that money to pay the other wrestlers instead.

After Murdoch left WWC, JDS was the heel manager for all of the heel wrestlers. He said there was a time when he was staying with Fidel Sierra and Mohammed Hussein. Sierra was near hitting rock bottom and he took their rental car one day and disappeared for a week into the projects. They tried helping him before he left, but Fidel turned down their help and Fidel's future wife Fantasy would call them daily to speak with him and they would always have to make up excuses as he wasn't there. Eventually Fidel returned and they took care of him and his future wife helped him get clean and get his life back on track.

There was an angle where JDS faked a face turn and he said he had a big surprise during a title match between Murdoch and Invader. During the match, JDS interfered and he had a bottle of spray and he sprayed it in Invader's face. He says he got so much heat, he had to get police escorts. They accompanied him all the way to his house.

He took a break from the business and years later he turned face and he began feuding with Bronco #1. He was a great promo guy and he cut promos so intense on Bronco that Bronco got mad at him and told Carlos to tell him to tone it down as it was getting personal. After a show, he spotted a green car in the parking lot and he was told that was Bronco's car. At the time, Bronco didn't have a license as he had come to the territory from the Dominican Republic. In Puerto Rico, the cars have those registration sticker on their front windshield. JDS noticed that Bronco's car didn't have it, so it was a double violation. At Sundays TV taping, JDS said the police had done a poor job as there was a green car riding around without a registration sticker. The following week Bronco in his green car got pulled over and he got fined for driving around without a license and without it's registration sticker. At that Sundays TV taping, JDS said the police had finally done their job and they had fined the owner of the green car. Thing got more heated between JDS and Bronco and a few days later they revealed the cards and they caught JDS by surprise as they threw him in a match with Bronco. Dennis thinks it was a rib as Bronco had JDS spend the entire match on offense and El Viking was the ref and he spent the entire match pressuring JDS to beatdown Bronco. He was blown up.

When he returned, Jovica and Carlos offered him a contract and told them his money would be on time now and they offered him his own segment on the show where he would a short talk show. It was called Ringside con Joe Don Smith. The producer of the show told him they needed to find a way to create controversy. They managed to get an interview with a serious local journalist called Francisco Ojeda. Ojeda at the time had a real life grudge with a politician who's nickname was El Caballo, the Horse. In the interview JDS tells Ojeda his hair was white and that it reminded him of a horse and of course that caused Ojeda to flip out and cuss him out on TV. Moving forward they would create a script for the segment and they would alter it when they were recording so JDS could bring up personal questions that would get the people he was interviewing mad and they would storm off the set.

JDS was also the manager who got Abdullah the Butcher to break character at a live event and got him to dance in front of the crowd. Abdullah went from being a foreigner monster to being a lovable and adored by the fans.

Jovica and Carlos began falling back on their pay and JDS eventually left. At the time, Dutch Mantell was working with IWA and JDS and he would meet for lunch. Savio began joining for lunch and he began asking JDS about his thoughts on IWA. Within two weeks of Savio joining them for lunch, JDS jumped to IWA. In his debut for the company, JDS came out as a surprise and opened a card and Savio told him to cut a promo saying IWA was the best wrestling company in the world. That promo burned bridges and Jovica didn't allow him to return to WWC for approximately 5 years.

In his time in IWA, he also had a segment with Stefano and Chicano and the show was so popular they also got a local radio show which they had special guests with BJ and someone else calling in as a parody of Hugo Savinovich called Jugo Savinovich (Juice Savinovich) and Willie Urbina called Willie Turbina (Willie Turbine) (Willie Urbina was a former IWA commentator and now AAA and AEW Spanish commentator).

Joe talks about his post wrestling career where he turned to Christianity and he says God saved him healed him from illnesses and saved his life.

And before the end of the interview, he says he was living a double life which is another reason why he didn't get into wrestling for the money solely and why he had jewelry and was always driving Benzes.

I'm sure I'm missing some details and stuff as I listen to these when I'm driving to and from work during the week.

It's also funny to include Chavito, who is not exactly a textbook definition of "lucha practicioner".

Admittedly, better than involving Carlos.

It took me a minute to realize who you were talking about and during that time I was thinking how a WWC-influenced show might be kind of fun.

As it is, I never really thought about Chavo's career and I guess I always just assumed he started in AAA or CMLL. Cagematch only has one match prior to WCW listed. Does anyone know much about his early stuff? Wikipedia says he did shows in Mexico from 94-96.

I'm not surprised. Dean Ambrose used paperwork to get out of defending the WWE United States Championship ;).

That's exactly the reason I hated Greg Valentine as a kid, his legs looked super disturbing to me, just two smooth, oily sausages

Yeah! Any idea how fluent Mox's Japanese is? Imagine how long it will take him to get through all that stuff if he is nowhere near fluent?

So I just saw Sarah Rowe (off the Rioty Squad) complaining on twitter that her Instagram is being suppressed and her views and interactions are way down. But then she said "I don't post anything controversial, I just post things that reflect traditional American values".

Really not inclined to check exactly what she's alluding to there, but it sounds ominous.
