AEW Dynamite - 10/28/2020

Recommended Posts

I thought the show peaked with Hangman vs Wardlow. I think they did a good job of making Wardlow look strong while still giving Hangman the clean win.

I’m more interested in where they’re going with the MJF Jericho than the actual segments they’re doing.

The women’s match was pretty good by AEW standards. I was actually curious about what happened with the Tay Conti Abadon match but I guess whatever happened was too bad to show.

The Cody Orange match was okay but we saw it two weeks ago and I’m not that into the Orange gimmick.

Omega vs Pentagon was pretty disappointing. I thought they had a better match last year. Omega’s weird facial expressions and awkward movements really took me out of the match.

I don’t know if it’s because it was taped or if it’s just because this is a transition show before the ppv week show but overall it seemed like this show was missing some of the energy the shows usually have.

I had another look. The most viewed video on Beyond's channel (Dickinson vs Addy Starr) has 222 Million views. The most viewed one on WWE's channel (Randy Orton makes it personal with Triple H) has 243 Million. But the second most viewed WWE one (John Cena and Brock Lesnar get into a brawl that clears...) has 176 Million. So it's not only the most viewed match, it's the second most viewed Wrestling video on the world's leading video website.

Abadon suffered a throat injury from tay Conti that left her unable to breath and they rushed her to the hospital.

Out here in Vegas when Guevara said what ever he said to MJF it cut to commercial abruptly then came right back after he said whatever he said. It was a short commercial but weird.

Warlord vs Page was rowdy. That spear was gnarly. Whoever said this could be headlining a PPV I totally agree. Wardlow is a license to print money. He’s not only like a big powerhouse wrestler but like he showed with that moonsault off the top he can fly when he wants. Page landed him moonsault so I’ll give Him that. He hit two. Page is no slouch himself, he’s a star in the making too. It taking two Buckshot Lariats to put Wardlow down was a nice touch. I enjoyed this a lot. How was Wardlow wrestling in obscurity out in Pittsburgh for so long?

I liked that Video Package from Moxley and the pre match promo from Kingston. The match at Full Gear is gonna be good. I like that they gave Kingston vs Sydal backstory with Kingston referencing The Casino Battle Royal. This match was really good what I really appreciated is they kept wrestling during the commercial by that I mean they didn’t slow down out all they just kept going. Match was everything is was suppose to be Kingston kicked ass Sysfak kept up even kicked some ass but eventually Kingston proved too much for Sydal. Kingston not letting go of the choke, it’s nice to see a true heel in 2020. Whatever Kingston’s group is developing into its own adding Allie was a good idea.

I liked the Bucks-FTR interview. Call me crazy but I think we are seeing a double turn at Full Gear atleast the Bucks are turning full heel at Full Gear. Not sure if FTR is turning face. I hope the Bucks go the Cody route and lose the match. Loose the match have a meltdown assault Excalibur or something else equally crazy and become heels.

So the Town Hall Meeting I enjoyed it. This was played completely straight yes there was comedy but the actual town hall meeting was structured like a town hall meeting in TV I liked that. MJF was condescending throughout the segment. Santana Ortiz and Sammy have had enough of all this they don’t like MJF. I like Eric Bischoff he’s full of shit but idk I love WCW especially the WCW Bischoff oversaw so I got a soft spot for him. MJF losing his cool because he’s not getting his way leads to a match at Full Gear: if MJF wins he joins the Inner Circle. This may be Ortiz’s breakout he’s good on the mic and he’s passionate about MJF not joining the Inner Circle.

So Team Taz. Is still courting Hobbs but Hobbs still has Darby’s back. Simple but effective video package that furthered the stortyline without taking up too much air time.

The Lumberjack match, was good I liked it. I like that Cassidy with his aloft attitude turns out to be a worthy advisory for Cody. Much like Kingston vs Sydal the match didn’t slow down during the commercial. This was fun. The lumberjacks did what they were suppose to do. I really dug the dug the suplex countered into a stunner. Off course it becomes a brawl after the bell. So being that the Dark Order helped Codybwin the match does that mean Cody was the exalted one all along. “It was me. It was me all along Brodie!”. Or did Brodie Lee give the Dark Order to keep the belt on Cody so he can take it off him, himself. We’ll see if the Dark Order gets involved at Full Gear.

Penelope Ford dressed you as Orange Cassidy for Halloween.

I wish they showed footage of the match where Deeb won the title but it is a PPV so maybe they want to get some potential buys and not spoil the victory. Deebs promo was good she’s almost like the workers champion with the belt atleast that’s the vibe I got. I thought this match was really good. Actually so far I haven’t disliked a match. Layla Hersh is badass if I was AEW I’d consider signing her. Deeb put on a clinic. She reminds me of WCW Dean Makenko she’s gonna have a good match, she’s just that badass. That arm bar move was cool looking. I hope Deeb defends the title more on Dynamite.

We are returning to Shida vs Nyla at Full Gear. I thought they were gonna go with Britt.

Did we really need a Shawn Spears squash match? I guess we did need it to set up the Scorpio Sky run in. Does this angle feel like a demotion for Scorpio Sky to anymore else?

Kenny Omega’s entrance is so over the top. Kenny’s a fucking prick and I think this is the most I’ve liked him since the Okada program. I dug this one a lot. Crazy Kenny is the best Kenny. I liked the brawling aspect of the match. Every match has almost picked up during the picture in picture and this one is no exception. I think what I liked about this match was that it felt so or die to me every move count. Both men’s goals were to put the other down. That Canadian Destroyer onto the ramp was gnarly. I also dug Penta fighting out of the OWA then get in the submission hold was cool too. Kenny finally does hit the OWA and it’s game over man.

I liked the show a lot I think it was great from an in ring standpoint.

It probably won't happen, but I'm totally in favor of Eddie Kingston winning the title at Full Gear and just getting epic promos every week and just stomping on dudes.

Some good matches this week. Penta vs. Omega was a lot of fun. That said, having Omega get hit with a Canadian Destroyer on the ramp and a package piledriver back to back was just overkill. I would've vetoed that and just kept one. Having Kenny get hit with both of those back to back and then kick out is just insane. Especially on a TV main event.

I’m willing to bet the thumbnails for the non-WWE videos have a lot to do with the views, instead of the caliber of the matches or competitors.

I would have enjoyed tonight's show if the picture didn't keep crapping out.

I was having the same problem as were quite a few people on Twitter. When they went to commercial it seemed to be fine. But when the show was on it was choppy and going in and out. I ended up watching on the TNT App and it was fine there. But it must have been something with TNT because when Star Wars started it was still doing the jumpy video.

Aside from those technical problems, I thought it was a good show. Not great. There seemed to be a bunch of filler this week.

Cody/Cassidy 2 was fine. I thought the lumberjack stip made no sense though. I guess we're getting Cassidy vs. Dark Order from all of this. Though Arn vs. Orange is a match I didn't know I ever wanted to see and know we can't get it. Cody not seeing Arn with the cheap shot was nice though. Arn is telling this great story of Cody being cocky and it's gonna cost him.

I'm sad they're going with Jericho/MJF at the PPV. I was really hoping they would keep dragging this out with MJF ducking him while still antagonizing him. At this point I don't think MJF needs to join Tully and FTR. But if he did, he would be a vast improvement over Shawn Spears. Nothing against him, but he does not fit with Tully at all.

I can't figure out what Kenny Omega is going for. He's trying to be this version of The Cleaner that makes no sense.  If he wants to just be a guy with a super ego who's like "no one is on my level", do that. I was hoping Pentagon would win because I could see it setting up this angle where Kenny costs Hangman the match and tournament at Full Gear. I'm afraid we're finally going to get Kenny and The Bucks booking themselves over everyone. The Bucks put themselves into a corner with the whole "if we don't win, we'll never challenge for the tag titles again".

Moxley and Kingston is setting up to be a great match. I want Eddie to win. But not if he's gonna be a transition champion for Kenny.

I just hope Full Gear II is better paced than the last AEW PPV though the majority of my interest/involvement was taken away by what happened to Matt Hardy and how badly it was handled.

I seem to remember Matt Sydal being in the business for fucking years already and also being pretty damn good.

Both true, but beside the point. What has Sydal done in AEW to establish himself to that audience? Has he even been on Dynamite before last night?

I mean, I sort of remember liking Evan Bourne, but I had no idea who Sydal was when he showed up last PPV. And remembering Bourne at all probably puts me ahead of the curve as far as caring about Sydal goes. Like it or not, to much of the audience Sydal is just the guy who fucked up his debut at the casino battle royal. Having a competitive match with that guy does nothing to build Kingston.

I only had one problem with Dynamite and now it's a problem with AEW booking and that's going back to this fucking stupid self-imposed stipulation that if the Young Bucks don't win the titles then they'll never challenge for them again. I figured after they did that with Cody then they wouldn't do it again. And yet, here we are again.

I love AEW and it delivers basically most everything I want from a wrestling promotion, but I hate stips like this. The feud in particular between FTR and the Bucks doesn't feel particularly hot, this direction the Bucks have gone in where they're dicks but also babyfaces feels kinda dumb and misinformed (it feels like something someone in an efed would do), and it feels a little early to take the titles off of FTR.

There's one more week until the PPV and I suppose they can do something next week to heat this match up, but at this point I'm not digging the angle or feud even if I'm sure the match will more than deliver.

The rest of the show was great. I fucking love Wardlow and Page so much. That match was the shit. Wardlow and Page are so money.

The lumberjack match started hot and then had something of a flat finish, but I fucking cracked up for John Silver's antics. That kid is so good. I also cracked up at Best Friends taking their cheap shots on Cody. The post match angle backstage with Miro and Kip was whatever, but it proves what we said a week or two ago that Best Friends will make Miro and Kip look legit. And Penelope dressed as OC looked like something out of a Guess ad back in 1992. Anyway, shit finish to the match even though Silver cracked me up.

Kingston and Moxley are on such another level wrestling and promo wise in the US. I don't think it hurts the World title that much if you have Kingston choke Moxley out and win by stoppage. You don't get Moxley saying he quits, Moxley winds up having an argument for a rematch, do a rematch a month later on Dynamite and have Moxley win the title back then.

The MJF and Inner Circle stuff is legit interesting to me. Ortiz can fucking talk, man. I'm looking forward to Ortiz and Sammy vs MJF and Wardlow next week. Should be pretty good.

PLEASE SIGN LEYLA HIRSCH. This goes right back to what we were talking about in the general AEW thread, but you have to start signing some of these women.

Penta vs Kenny was pretty awesome. Felt like a mix of Penta's matches and some Japanese style shit, which I dug even though some of the theatrics from Penta and Kenny felt disjointed. Very stiff match. Kenny and Page is going to be great and I'm hoping these guys cut the promo of a lifetime next week.

Considering Kenny's angle throughout his career in the company has been that he lost his vicious intensity and is trying to get it back, the overblown entrance and him talking to himself all the way through the match really works. Like he's constantly in need of self-reassurance.

I really liked Hangman/Wardlow!  First off, I enjoy the interviews they do right by the entrance, and then use that to transition to walking to the ring.  It gives the setting a real sense of place instead of some weird wrestling dimension that exists outside the real world.  It makes AEW feel like a sport instead of a TV show.  MJFs "Wardlow's going to win the belt and then give it to me" promo was great, real Ted DiBiase vibes.  Likewise, Wardlow's low key reaction was perfect.  Nice slow build to this thing eventually blowing up.  Anyway, excellent match.  The finishing sequence put Wardlow over as a guy you need to kill to beat.  That sack o' shit slam off the top did not look pleasant to take, then we got two Buckshot Lariats.  NICE.  I remain firmly on the Wardlow train.

I know AEW has some sort of deal with Corgan where they had to promote the NWA, but giving soooo much time and hype to Deeb and then cutting to a short, awful promo by Shida to promote her barely-built match was terrible.  It made AEW's women's champion less than an afterthought.

I have no idea where they're going with Cody but this title run has been a mess so far.  Silver interferes AND Arn takes a cheap shot at OC?  And both behind Cody's back.  What is going on here?  What's this storyline going to lead to?  Good match until the meh finish, though.  I loved Chuck and Trent catching OC and then, later, unceremoniously dropping Cody.  BF yelling at everyone to back off, then going in for the hug, was fucking perfect as well.  Very cool booking with Cassidy going right to serious mode, even eschewing the hands-in-pockets spot for a fakeout and attack on Cody.  Good job by Excalibur explaining OC's lucha training after just-here-for-the-paycheck JR, ostensibly the color commentator whose job it is to explain these things, said something about not seeing/knowing much about OC's wrestling skills.  You can bet that if OC spent two weeks as the 8th string end-guard-and-tackle for the Tuscaloosa Bull Terriers semipro football team, he'd know all about that.  I guess we can at least be thankful he didn't call Excalibur a nerd for knowing it.

Jericho/MJF was fine, I guess.  I like the segue into the Ortiz/Sammy vs MJF and Wardlow tag match.  Ortiz giving the ASL sign for "bullshit" was top notch.  I hope he learned that from Curb Your Enthusiasm like I did.  Nice job by Reba playing the Trump lady from the town hall.  Schiavone's "shut up" was fun but they should have cut MJF's mic instead if they want to keep doing 2020 presidential race references.  Likewise, MJF needed just a tiny bit more spray tan.

Not sure about the Bucks doing the exact same gimmick as Cody with the "if we lose we won't challenge for the belts ever again" thing.  It's too early for FTR to lose, right?  So then what?  Heel EVP gimmick where they go back on their word?  That's not great.

Penta/Omega sure was a mixed bag.  I really like Kenny re-finding a character after a year of just kind of being around.  Great match until the finishing run.  Canadian Destroyer to the ramp and then a kickout because it took too long to get him into the ring for the pin attempt would have been fine.  But Canadian Destroyer to the ramp and then a package piledriver, for a two count, is a bridge too far for me and I'm a PWG fan for fuck's sake.  And then Pentagon does the arm break, the announcers play up how that will keep Kenny from hitting the OWA...and then he hits it for the pin?  Jesus.  Fantasy booking:  When Kenny had Penta up for the OWA and Penta was struggling, I imagined Kenny pulling off his mask and then Penta falling off, covering up, and giving up the pin.  Which would have been a better finish for Kenny's dick heel persona.

Hirsh has those Tyler Bate-like proportions that make her look like a little person and it was really disconcerting.  People are saying they should sign her but I'm not so sure.  They're not doing enough with the women they do have.  When your next show's women's world title challenger has spent the majority of the past few months in the crowd watching the show, your problem is not lack of staffing.

Eddie/Sydal was good.  Enjoyed the chokeout and taunting Moxley at the end.  Moxley has got to win best promos for the WON, right?  God damn.

Add "Jericho and Hager are gunning for the tag belts" to your list of angles AEW has abruptly dropped.

I was hoping Bischoff would ask about climate change.

MJF's line about Sammy looking like somebody who sells Adderall to kids was fucking tremendous and is indicative of what guys can do when given some leeway instead of a script.

I liked the Taz promo about wanting Hobbs in his group because, regardless of everything else, Hobbs can make him a lot of money.  Holy shit, a promo and motivation that is simple and makes sense.  Yes, please.

Bravo to AEW for booking the tournament to look like it was going Hangman/Kenny, then sticking to it.  We talked about this yesterday.  There's no damn reason at all to do a swerve.  Tease something and then just give it to us.  It's not 1998 anymore.  Excellent.

I enjoyed the show quite a bit.  Hangman/Wardlow was wonderful and the main event delivered.  I also liked the lumberjack match though the ending was a bit weird to me.  But before that it was good.

The only thing is while the town hall was amusing at points I hated the references to the real debate/town hall that happened.  I watch wrestling to get away from shit like that and them using the "I like your smile" line (a lady said that during 45's town hall) along with other things just took me out of it.  Now if I didn't know what it was referencing I might have liked it a bit more.  But I could have really done without that.

But aside from that I liked the show.  There's momentum for matches at Full Gear and it's made me a good bit more excited for the show than I already was.

JR says some things that annoy me from time to time, but what’s the issue with saying someone’s been on the squat rack? It’s a physical “sport”, people have different statures, different shapes. Could he say Wardlow can bench press double his body weight? Is that allowed?

Not to speak for anyone but probably the belief that he was using "she's been hitting the squat rack" as a way of talking about her ass.  I didn't take it that way but, given previous comments by JR, I can't begrudge anyone for being sensitive about his commentary when it comes to women's appearances.

Yeah, that's pretty much it.  I don't hate JR as when he's on he's on.  But considering JR's recent history for things that should not be said even if he didn't mean it that way he shouldn't say it (the All Out line about Anna Jay is one main example).  But I get it if those didn't take it that way.

I think if that’s the case he may as well be made to sit in the back when the women fight, if he can’t even mention someone’s physical appearance.

when he says something out of line, by all means jump on him. But I don’t see why you’d bring this up.

I removed it from that post.  I realize it may have been just me but hate feeling like it's a shit opinion when it was something that just irked me more than anything else.
