Magneto, Nazi Hunter, could've been a whole movie.

Personally, I had Gravity pretty high, so I wouldn't be surprised it it still shows up, and yes, I saw it in IMAX 3D.

Joker was the best movie of the decade for me hands down. Not since There Will Be Blood have I been so utterly blown away by a performance. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE Paul Thomas Anderson put Joaquin Phoenix and Daniel Day-Lewis in a movie together. On top of that, I didn't expect the film to be so thoroughly focused on class struggle. Which changes the whole lens in which you view Batman. He is NOT a good dude, beating up petty thugs when he could use his vast resources for systemic change.

Also, hilarious. All the dark humor hit spot on, though I seemed to be the only one laughing in the theatre.

As for being derivative of Scorsese, it's certainly influenced by and in some ways an homage to both Taxi Driver and The King of Comedy, casting DeNiro as the talk show host was a blatant acknowledgement of such, but it's far from an imitation.

Great post!

The Irishman is about growing to old age being a blessing or curse depending on how you’ve lived your life. We see how every criminal who died young was murdered to establish that they’re frozen in time at the age of their death. The consequence is not being alive anymore, but maybe it’s better than gumming your food in prison or realizing you’ve ruined every personal relationship you’ve ever had and you’ll die alone.

Hoffa realizes this on some level and refuses to accept surrendering his union because it’d be the equivalent to him of accepting his advanced age and mortality. He’d rather risk his life to maintain the power and relevance of his youth than go out peacefully as some old codger who used to be somebody. The tragedy of course is that the Hoffa presented in The Irishman is beloved by his family and just generally better adjusted than Frank, who is empty inside save for his desire to maintain his identity with the mafia and the teamsters.

It’s funny how much we worry about the future, but few of us meditate on the consequences of how we live our lives aside from maybe health and finances. We don’t consider falling victim to the alienation and loneliness of being elderly until it’s upon us. It’s a movie about how life isn’t just about crossing the finish line; it matters how we run the race.

I had written up a long post about my appreciation for this reading of the movie but I lost it and don't want to re-write the whole thing but the general point of it was that, I think this will make me appreciate the movie more if I ever get around to re-watching it and that it really brings the movie closer to Goodfellas in my mind as one is about growing up chasing childhood fantasies and the consequences and the other is about moving from from adulthood to old age.

True story:  First time I watched MI:FALLOUT was on like an 8-inch seatback screen on an airplane.  I’m not proud of it, and it’s probably some kind of heresy against Lord Cruise, who did that skydiving sequence like 30 times to get it right, for which I will be justly punished when our space lizard overlords finally return.

Between practice and filming, they've said it was 106 jumps from 25,000 feet. So of course sending this dude to space is the only logical next step.

I'm late to the party here, but holy fuck Sorry to Bother You is the most insane thing I've seen in a long time. It's literally like nothing I've ever seen before. I definitely hope Boots Riley has another film in him. And maybe another Street Sweeper Social Club album.

50) THE FAVOURITE (2018)

Director: Yorgos Lanthimos

403 Points (6 Votes) - HIGH VOTE: Bill S Preston (#6) - ADDITIONAL VOTES: Andy in Kansas, Broken Lamp, EVA, KLOS, Control

IMDB : ROTTEN TOMATOES (93%/69%) : METACRITIC (91/7.7)

I was let down on this one here. I was fascinated by 'Killing of A Sacred Deer' and intrigued by/not completely sold on 'The Lobster' so I was excited for a big budget Lanthimos movie with a great cast. But it felt, to me, very much like toned-down Lanthimos/Oscar-friendly Lanthimos. Just never clicked me. Maybe it, like all things, needed more Colin Farrell.

This is a big shocker to me, as I thought it had enough praise/fans to easily slot into the Top 10 if not the Top 5. Seeing it come down this early is surprising to me, though, truthfully, it's probably in about the right spot. JK Simmons is goddamn terrifying in this one.

I thought about bumping this off my list in favour of something else, and then it was on cable recently and I watched 1/2-3/4 of it and laughed really hard and remembered why I enjoyed it so much the first time around all over again.

I completely forgot this movie existed. It probably could have snuck into my HMs for sure. I liked this miles better than the sequel

I'm pretty shocked that this made the list. I mean, I voted for it in the HMs largely because I only saw it once, late at night and don't remember a ton about it I mean except that insane twist towards the end taking it in a completely different direction than I expected and because I didn't think it had much backing on here to actually make the list. My bad.

somewhat astounded and disappointed I'm the only #1 on Sorry To Bother You, but so it goes

short: for all the movies about The World Today :*( , Sorry To Bother You actually proposes solutions instead of just saying what the bad things are. On top of that, it's fucking hilarious and everyone in that movie is fantastic in it.

126) A GIRL WALKS HOME ALONE AT NIGHT (2014)

Director: Ana Lily Amirpour

194 Points (2 Votes) - HIGH VOTE: Execproducer (#3) - ADDITIONAL VOTE: Sublime

IMDB ROTTEN TOMATOES (96%/75%) : METACRITIC (81/7.1)

NOTE FROM RIPPA - Almost all the discussion I can find is @Curt McGirt saying he is going to watch it and then saying that he didn't actually watch it

Ooo this one was good.

The way he comes up behind her in his weak Dracula get-up not knowing that the score is, and then the way she tilts his head back. Tense and stylish as hell. Woo, hit me with that good shit, Iran! Good call, Execproducer and Sublime.

So go see Inherent Vice. And then go see it a second time because you're gonna be TOTALLY tripped out after seeing it the first time. Just an awesome, awesome film. Phoenix was downright fantastic in it.

Watched Inherent Vice today. Man, that film is horny. Really horny. I don't know that I've ever used that adjective to describe a film (hell, a lot of porno can't even go by that though it's meant to get you off), but that one... whew. Not really what I expected but most everything in that film is not what me or anyone else might expect.
