CYBERPUNK 2077

Developers used to be able to patch games without it turning into a media event. Prior to the advent of online services, consumers usually weren't aware if a game got patched or not.  Unless different batches of cartridges were different colors or the game happened to have the ver number stamped on the cart or title screen, players usually couldn't tell.  Now players and media know when patches are released and it's become std. practice to expect them frequently.

as far as why the gaming press reviews unpatched games, I've been told by a couple of people that work at two of the largest gaming press sites that when they can't get a review up as soon as the embargo ends, or the day of release or whatever, traffic goes way down.  Apparently, if you tell viewers "we just got the code.  Our review will be up by Friday", said viewers go looking for reviews elsewhere and don't come back to the site on Friday to read your review.

As said, the problem is completely on the developer.  If you don't want reviewers reviewing buggy, unpatched builds of games, don't send them the codes to the unpatched version of the game.  Although, maybe the real problem is that fans read about performance problems and take the reviews as gospel even though they know a patch is on the way.  I enjoy reading reviews, but I don't give them that much weight, particularly if the reviewer is griping about performance issues or game-breaking bugs.  In 2020, how many games don't get performance issues and game-breaking bugs patched out?

I've been playing a lot of Switch ports lately.  Several of them had fairly severe issues at release (Rime, A Hat in Time, Bloodstained, etc.).  But, by the time I've gotten to them, they've all had at least a few patches released and whatever issues were there are gone now.

It is the version that is on the disk that you can go to the store and pay sixty dollars for.

And as soon as that disk boots up on your console or PC, you will get that lovely Cyberpunk 2077 needs an update message and 40 gigs of data will be loaded into the queue and you won't be able to play until after the installation is complete.

Reviews of the unpatched initial release are totally pointless.

Sadly, that was when software companies had extensive QA/QC departments that thoroughly tested the product before release and when software wasn't as complex as it is now.  Back then it was unheard of for a version to get past 2.0.   Software might need a hotfix for a random anomaly, but rarely required a patch to shore up anything totally broken.

This is why I despise the concept of open betas.  Developers are not inviting you to "play the game early."  They are cutting cost by farming out their QA/QC to customers and aren't paying them a single dime.

Early reviews of unpatched games may as well be bug reports, only the journalist is being paid for his time by the organization he works for rather than the software developer.  All for the sake of being the first one to review a new title.

BTW - if anyone on the XBOX is really impatient (JT might be the only person I know for sure on this side)

It has been discovered that if you change your time zone (most folks are just using New Zealand) - you can start playing the game today instead of waiting till tomorrow. (Just change the time zone and then reboot)

I am not impatient.  Thanks to USARPAC and the Japanese SDF, I'm working swing shift until Sunday, so I won't really be able to devote any real blood, time, and brain matter to the game until next Monday when I am.... teleworking....

When I get home after shift tonight it will be after 1 in the morning.  I will probably pass out immediately.  I've waited this long, so I can wait a little longer.  I am old and need my sleep.

I might do that just to download that huge patch.

So, since I got a nice gift card from work that added up to the right amount, I was *gonna* grab it and run the download just to have it done (whenever I finish up Valhalla)...

But apparently PSN's login servers are down -_-

One of the streamers I follow was playing it earlier, albeit still doing character creation.

I will probably spend a great deal of time in the character creator.

Normally, I would zip by Gamestop after work to see if they were having a midnight launch dealie, but there is COVID about and probably a retail curfew.   I will go pick up my copy tomorrow and then go get a haircut while I download 40 gigs over my secure wi-fi.

FYI Cyberpunk seems to be really harsh on epileptics. A Game Informer staffer reported suffering a grand mal seizure while playing, and wrote about the things that provoked her own epilepsy in this article here:

Jesus. My Little Sis' had two seizures out of nowhere. I still remember the visuals and how scared I was for her safety. Horrible.

This game is the shit. It's everything I hoped for so far. I do need to bump the text size up though. My biggest tv is 50" and from where I sit with the default text size, it's way too small to read.

I am young and don't need sleep, plus my ps5 arrived early yesterday, so I played it from midnight until 2am last night. Even watching the countdown clock like new years \o/.

Laughed far too hard at the delightful bounce your penis makes every time you change it. Basically made myself as a character so it only took me about 45 mins before I got into the game, but if you were making up a new character unlike yourself, yeah you could spend hours in character creation.

The gunplay feels really good so far, actually feels like a shoot em up. Enemies are bullet spongy, but I prefer that over CoD's 2 bullet kill system, plus it makes sense if everyone is augmented somehow.

Spent a lot of time just in awe of how big the map is, especially in verticality. There is also loads of NPCs crammed in everywhere, making it feel like overpopulation could be a thing.

Hacking was quite complicated to read about past midnight, but looks like it is going to be quite intuitive once practiced.

Can't wait to play it again once I finish work.

So the second person you can possibly talk to being glitched right off the bat probably isn't the best sign of the stability of this game post patch (they forgot to give her her upper legs)

Barely got a chance to play, but it still seems pretty awesome

Gameplay leaked of this thing on an Xbox One S, and mannnnn it's not pretty. I haven't watched anything from the PS4/PS4 Pro (besides what CDPR themselves showed), but at least on the Xbox... fuck, it's like walking through quicksand. And freezes. The characters have choppy edges around them, if that makes sense. So if it runs like this on a One S, then I wonder if it'll even run at all on a base Xbox One. That's not good.

Looks like what Casey said here turned out to be true as multiple folks are reporting that the "previous" gen version is shit - even post patch.

Which should seem a little concerning because the primary reason for the last delay was to "optimize the XBOX/PS4 versions"

The smallest penis size being bigger than your average dong is laughable. No matter what you're either going to be hung like a pornstar or you're going to have a vagina.

My biggest hang up with the game right now is that unless you stealth kill an enemy, then they're a total bullet sponge. I've tried telling myself that all of the enemies have head armor or whatever, but it's still weird to headshot someone multiple times and not kill them. The numbers based damage early on is kinda sucky.

Also, I'm a Corpo, but that choice doesn't even feel like it matters at this point.

The only glitches/bugs I've had (so far) was Jackie holding an invisible pistol during the Sandra mission, and then in the training module whenever you'd return from a course, you'd still be moving forwards or sometimes spinning around. And I know it's not controller drift, since it's literally the only time it's happened (and never had drift in any other games, either). Other than that... yeah, I'm loving this. I've already got a shitload of side missions, but most of them have a high danger level. I like using the guns, but melee is surprisingly fun too, despite what the reviews I read/watched said ("lacked weight" or whatever). My only complaint about melee is that dodging is tied to the same button that you crouch with.

I really want the PS5 upgrade immediately, though. It's not that the game is "ugly" or anything, but I want this game to take full advantage of everything the PS5 can do. The graphics are pretty good, but there are some texture problems, like hair having that jagged look or whatever. But it's really small complaints when it comes to that.

Oh, and I went Nomad path, just because I want to see Alanah Pearce's character because I'm a fucking stan. ?

The post-training module drift thing must be a common problem because I had the same exact thing. It made me worried that my controlled was already fucked.

I wanted to go and start prize fighting right away, but two things happened. One, while running to Kabuki, where the fights were at, I ran into a crime in progress. I stopped to look at the person being assaulted and then all of those people jumped me. Two, I got to where the fights were supposed to be, but I couldn't get into the building. All of the doors were locked.

Dear any of my employer's IT guys who happen to read this,

In my defense, I'd just like to point out that I had no way of knowing the conversation would go in this direction.  If I had known penis size would have been a major topic of conversation, I would not have browsed the site from my work computer have been a lot sneakier about circumventing the company's security software and violating various policies about using my work computer for personal use.

Thanks for not turning me in.  ~ Matt

I am so happy Kotaku wrote this

https://kotaku.com/peoples-dicks-are-clipping-through-their-pants-1845849381

Because the accidental nudity on Ellen's stream yesterday (see the last image in the story) was hysterical because it wasn't just clipping. As she was streaming - she looked in the mirror and, despite being fully clothed, her character was topless.

I think only @AxB will understand why this was so funny
