AEW Dynamite - 9/2/2020

Death From Above

Recommended Posts

This show made me very happy as a wrestling fan. This was a proper, really good go-home show where all the segments did what they needed to do and nothing on it was actually bad.

That whole opening Best Friends vs Santana/Ortiz segment was great.

MJF's promo was so good. That switched from comedy to All Work And No Play Makes MJF A Dull Boy real fast.

I thought the 8-man was decent. I thought the result was always kind of obvious because why the fuck would you put SCU/Private Party on PPV over the Bucks/Jurassic Express but they got there in a good way. Serious Bucks are actually fun. Someone did a shooting star press without fucking anything up, which feels like it is 50/50 in the wrestling business on the whole. Enjoyed this.

Kenny Omega calling the FTR "dickhead hillbillies" ruled. Kenny Omega being dismissive of Tully Blanchard existing despite it putting him in direct personal danger ruled. FTR calling Hangman Page "a piece of shit" ruled. This is exactly the kind of "angry men doing angry dumb shit to build up to punching each other on the big show" shit the WWE thinks fans don't want to see for some fucking dumbass reason. Wrestling is great. It's honestly not that complicated.

Jericho just kicking the shit out of Joey Janella while Orange Cassidy watches was pretty good. Post-match brawl involving Sonny Kiss coming out to try and get some payback for his tag partner, giving Jake Hagar a chance to also slam someone, was honestly a nice little touch. This show is delivering exactly what I want from a go-home show so far, all these segments are getting to the point they need to. Nothing on this show has been bad yet.

Jake Roberts said nut. Eddie Kingston basically told Jake Roberts to shut the fuck up. Half the wrestlers on earth are brawling just for the hell of it. I fucking love this show.

I liked the Dark Order/Nightmare family hype video too. Dustin being real quiet while he talks about how you attacked his brother and his brother's wife is the heavy shit. I don't know if I actually care about seeing Dustin and Brodie Lee wrestle in 2020 but I mean fuck it, I'll try it.

Thunder Rosa/Serena Deeb was good, wish it didn't have a commercial in the middle of it but what can you do I guess. I'm not sure you need to build up Rosa with a match this competitive as compared to a faster showcase, but I'm not going to complain about getting good wrestling on my TV. Both of these women are clearly better than a good chunk of the women's division so hopefully they stay around. Thunder Rosa's finisher is cool in that convoluted Akiyama clutch ultra exploder kind of way.

"You ain't foolin' nobody" INSTANT DEATH CRUTCH SHOT TO THE BACK OF THE HEAD. Listen, I don't know if Baker/Swole is actually going to be any fucking good. Probably not. But this moment alone was great, my favourite moment in their build.

Mark Sterling's ring gear is the most jobberific shit I can possibly imagine. It's perfect. This match reminded me of Stalker Ichikawa. Boy that was a weird looking guy, that Stalker Ichikawa. Man they are really putting Wardlow over strong. MJF is fucking great. Moxley is going to beat the shit out of him on Saturday.

Blade once, say "shit" twice every week. It's a fair trade.

Taz, Jake Roberts, Eddie Kingston and Tully Blanchard talking at the same time is the closest thing wrestling promos have ever had to Woodstock.

Was Serena Deeb that good before? After watching the AEW Women's division try not to choke on salt water for five months that match was balm.

I can't think of a scenario that would produce more storyline/character depth + entertainment than Moxley completely wiping out MJF. This would only work if FTR vs. BANG~!-Man is the main event, which it should be.

did Serena come out of retirement just to wrestle Thunder Rosa on Dynamite? Hopefully she stays active and signs, she’s the type of veteran the division needs (and is infinitely valuable as a coach).

I really hope Serena gets signed. The division needs an experienced vet like her and she can perhaps work with some of the greener members of the roster.

When they said Thunder Rosa’s opponent was going to be Serena, I knew it would be good and I wasn’t disappointed. Hopefully Deeb isn’t quite done with wrestling yet and sticks around for a minute. Really getting more and more excited for Shida/Rosa.

I could be wrong but Serena Deeb has been wrestling longer than about 80% of the AEW locker room.   She wss pretty good on the indies and was really good in OVW.  Then I think  she had issues in the WWE with drinking and was used mostly as a manager.  She was in the Mae Young Classic and I thought was still a trainer in NXT but I guess she was caught in the purge

IIRC, she was seen out enjoying adult beverages while she was a member of the Straight Edge Society, which led to her getting fired.

That was always insanely stupid to me. Mark Callaway goes out and about since 1990, and he's suppose to be dead. HE AIN'T LIVING THE GIMMICK~!

Thunder/Serena lived up to my hopes, great match! Both looked fantastic there and I definitely hope Serena gets signed. She'd be one of my top picks for the division for sure.  Lots of good build to All Out tonight. I like the Kenny/Hangman partnership so I hope they stick together as friends regardless of what happens around everyone else. Britt attacking with the pizza was amusing. "Holy pepperoni!"  The Casino Battle Royal preview brawl was fun, I like that there's no immediately obvious winner but a few possible choices. Dug all the big guy showdowns with Cage, Archer, Hager and of course Billy! Sad that there's no big match Cody but the PPV looks great on paper, looking forward to it.

Most definitely. Her 2010-2011 indy run after she first left WWE was excellent until a concussion wiped her out for over a year.

I liked Thunder Rosa/Deeb. Most of tonight was angles building up All Out, and from that standpoint, the show did it's job. I thought The main event was excellent in that sense. It did what it needed to do. MJF assaulted Moxley. That works.

I'm not sure I would've made Joey Janela the "sacrificial lamb" to Jericho tonight. Like they couldn't have gotten Brandon Cutler to do this? I get that Janela isn't a mega star or anything, but I think they could've gotten someone else to play sacrificial lamb, which they oversold. JR even labeled Janela as a sacrificial lamb. Other than that, the segment worked.

I get a big attraction for AEW is the promos are unscripted, but the battle royal segment, much like last week, was just too sloppy and chaotic. Taz, Eddie Kingston, and Roberts were all just talking over each other, and it didn't work. It reminded me of those Royal Rumble promos that starts out with some John Cena idiocy, and then everyone is coming out and trying to get their catchphrases in. Too chaotic, sloppy, and schmozzy. Not saying they need to script all the promos, but they needed a few more cues and a bit more direction here. I kind of feel like they also rehashed a lot of the material from last week.

Not quite sure they are going with this Omega/Page angle, but we'll see.

Schiavone seemed a little off tonight with his interview segments as well. He seemed a little nervous for some reason. Dunno.

I was disappointed Janela didn't get some offense in. I definitely wouldn't have used him to get squashed like that. That would have been a fine spot for one of the Dark regulars, say Brian Pillman, Jr.. Besides that, I also feel like the segment worked.

Janela's promo was while you lot were on break, wasn't it? He was talking about how Jericho was his favourite wrestler when he was a kid and how he always wanted to be Jericho when he grew up. Which if that's true, he probably asked to be in the match even though he knew it was to be a squash.

Yeah no shit. Only problem was the dead silence it played to.

This was a really, really chaotic show in general, to the point of almost falling apart, but that's fine. JR was saying all kinds of ridiculousness the whole time too. It's about time Botchamania switches "Ross Time" to "Insipid JR Commentary".

And hey, I even caught a whiff of uncooperation in Friends/P+P! If they could do that all the time instead of taking it out on a vehicle or gear then that'd be just peachy.

1) I'm curious to find out of that pizza company Excalibur mentioned was a real place. Did they just get a free plug? Like did they know that segment was going to happen?
2) I got a Jimmy Hart vibe myself from that outfit.
