The Padres continued their busy deadline activities with a trade large in both numbers and long-term scope.  The Padres and Mariners combined on a seven-player deal that will see catcher/utilityman Austin Nola and right-handers Austin Adams and Dan Altavilla go to San Diego, while Seattle will receive top outfield prospect Taylor Trammell, infielder Ty France, catcher Luis Torrens, and right-hander Andres Munoz.

After already picking up Jason Castro from the Angels in another trade earlier today, the Padres will further bolster themselves behind the plate with Nola, though Nola brings extra versatility to the table.  While Nola has primarily worked as a catcher this season, he has a lot of experience at first base and second base, plus a handful of games as a third baseman and corner outfield.

Okay - the trade was officially announced as

The Padres announced Monday the acquisition of right-hander Mike Clevinger, outfielder Greg Allen and a player to be named later from the Indians in exchange for a six-player package of outfielder/first baseman Josh Naylor, catcher Austin Hedges, right-hander Cal Quantrill, minor league shortstop Gabriel Arias, minor league left-hands Joey Cantillo and minor league infielder Owen Miller.

wow so I'm reading that Clevinger isn't going to hit free agency until 2023 so the Padres will have him for a while.

From Trade Rumors

Beyond Clevinger’s high-end performance on the mound, his remaining club control only added to his allure among other clubs. He’s earning $4.1MM in 2020 — which prorates to about $1.48MM (with $617K yet to be paid) — and is controlled for an additional two seasons beyond the current campaign.

So since he has two more arbitration years left - the question is are the Padres going to be willing to pay him.

Assuming he keeps pitching like he has (and doesn't piss off his current teammates) - he is going to command a pretty penny and the Padres already have some very large (and bad) contracts on the books

The Marlins are buying AND selling.

Get rid of Villar but picking up Starlin Marte from the D-Backs

Villar was expected.

Getting Starling though is... interesting...  I mean, I kind of get it.  As loathe as I am to say it, they're still in the vicinity of the playoff hunt, so why not rent him for a year or so and roll the dice.  All it cost was walking injury report Caleb Smith (who frankly, I liked a lot).

Well the NL is horseshit this year so pretty much everyone is in the playoff hunt.

If the playoffs started right now - 1 team would make the playoffs with a .500 record and 3 would make it with sub .500 records

MLB and MLBPA have agreed to the expanded playoffs for this season

16 teams - first round are best of threes (no word if it is higher seed plays all home games as was once rumored)

Yeah - Top 2 from each divisions plus 2 WC from each league

That is why - so many of the middle of the road teams were buyers and not a lot of sellers

It is pretty much a lock a team from the NL will make it with a losing record

Well Alex Dickerson has himself a game

3 HRs, 2 Doubles

His 16 total bases in a single game ties Willie Mays for most in franchise history and he is only 15th player in MLB history to have 5 extra base hits in a game.

The Giants beat the Rockies 23-5. They had three players with 6 RBIs which is the first time that’s ever happened

The Pirates Socrates Brito might be opting out of the rest of the season.

There was a report that he definitely was, the Pirates announced that it was just "possible"

Socrates - who tested positive himself for COVID-19 this summer - just lost his brother to it.
