JULY 2020 WRESTLING DISCUSSION

This is true except that during the Attitude Era they aimed a more adult audience and that's when they were the most popular. And then it regressed into more child friendly themes and the audience dwindled. Those adults watching now are the ones that tuned in in the late 90s as young adults, not kids. So yes, WWE seems like children's programming now and certainly in the 80s/early to mid 90s, you can't say that they can't do anything else and the real question is why don't they do something else given the evidence we have now?

Even then, that doesn't necessarily mean that they're two different things. The key for writing good children's entertainment the whole family can enjoy is getting into the sweet spot of "Children want to be treated like they're adults, adults want to feel like they're a kid again."  You can hit that sweet spot with a more family-friendly product if you actively try to work at it.

Likewise, the "more adult-oriented show" claim is also the problem, since Heyman's run on Raw not being very good showed the problem. The Attitude Era was unpredictable, gave you a feeling that anything could happen, gave you a feeling everyone on the roster was important in their own way, and it felt like it worked. Most of the people who want the Attitude Era or a more adult-oriented program back, however, have been blinded by "Blood, swearing, and scantily clad women"- all the things that wrestling got away from for good reason, and it showed in Heyman's era (the Lashley/Rusev/Lana storyline was the most maligned thing of Heyman's run. Let the record show that storyline was also the single most Attitude Era storyline WWE has done in a long time.) For those things, it all makes sense. Blood no longer works because fans have made it clear they want the wrestlers to be as safe as possible in the ring. Scantily-clad women no longer work because the fans have made it clear that they want the women's wrestlers to be treated with respect, and every fan can realize "ten little girls who want to be Becky Lynch when they grow up" are far, far, far, far, far,  (there's not enough fars to really fathom how far this is) more important than "Hollywood Cybernetico in a raincoat." Even swearing could be used, but right now they use it right and have turned them into a high spot. (any time someone says as little as 'bitch' on WWE right now, it's seen as special.)

It is really amusing to me that them (and AJ Styles) actually bought Vince's line that it was Heyman's fault they got fired

Wait, so the guy that fired them told them that it was somebody else's responsibility for firing them, and they believed him?

I think they’re trying for that sweet spot now. The Fiend, Edge/Orton, a recovering alcoholic angle, I’m not convinced these are for kids. The Lana/Rusev angle was bad because it was bad, not because it was geared to an older audience. The Tozawa ninja stuff is bad and that’s meant for children (I hope). So to your original point, I think they are still trying to appeal to “us”, and kids, and members of the AARP. It’s the scattershot approach that isn’t doing them any favours and shifting the maturity level, sometimes mid-segment, is bound to alienate someone.

Fun fact: Florida is a medical Marijuana state.

$300 and you can walk in and tell them your back hurts sometimes or that you have stress. A week later you have the card and your choice of dispensary’s, most of which will deliver(mail).

Not saying the “burner” is full of shit but it is Twitter. Also those tweets make me glad pots and pans bixenspan is not here anymore.

I know that years ago I posted as a joke that Bix was the pot-banger, don't tell me that turned out to be true!

For an hour, Joey Ryan addresses most of the allegations against him. Of course he denies all of them.

A guy whose sole claim to fame is supposedly playing with his dick turns out to be a pervy scumbag! Say it isn't so!

Ditto- even if this name doesn't "reflect" who I am there, I also was one of the EWB people. (Doesn't work because I long ignored him here, but still.

I've known who you were here for a while, not sure quite how I figured it out.

I'm like square in the demo, I guess, 37, but even with the Network I can't be fucked to watch current stuff. I'm moving through the ECW redubs, just bouncing around, watching the Hardcore TV from 2000 for a fantasy booking project (I'm that kind of lame), and I just started to dig into the WCCW on the Network. Current stuff just doesn't catch my interest.

I do with I knew of an easy way to watch like, early 2000s indy stuff in context, I'm not too up on streaming services, but one where I could watch early PWG or ROH would be dope.

Oh, cool. What’s the fantasy booking project you’re working on? If you care to share.

It's just a TEW 'diary' based on ECW surviving with a HBO show, over on EWB. I seem to remember DVDVR not being too big on that stuff in the past, and 'defunct pro wrestling fan-fic' is probably the lamest possible sort of fan-fic, so I don't really talk about it, but hobbies is hobbies.

Those diaries are fun to dig through! I used to lurk and read through a bunch of them on there back when I was playing more. Shoot me a message of your page and I’ll try and check it out when I get my password figured out.

”Lamer” the hobby the better. Work friends tease me about wrestling, but hey I love it. Art, creativity, activity, whatever it is as long as it keeps you from focusing on the inevitability of how we’re all inching towards death. Throw in a ~weird~ hobby and you’re more interesting than others, is how I look at it.

Edit: I’m saying “lamer” because you said lame. I don’t think it’s lame, actually cool.

Joey Ryan should be nuked from orbit. Fuck that piece of shit.

That's a lot of collateral damage buddy, and chances are he'd be dead before he knew it.

Now if you said, "Joey Ryan should be taken out in the woods somewhere where somebody could see how long they can keep him alive while cutting pieces off him", that would make more sense...

First of all if you spent a whole hour of your Saturday night watching a Joey Ryan "apology" video then maybe you need to consider hookers and web cams for entertainment.  Hell even iMPACT last night is a better option.

From the clips I have seen, it is basically the predictable slut shaming and "in hindsight that was a bad joke".  I don't know how anybody is going to look at this and think everyone is so wrong about this.  The only smart thing he did he was remove the porn star look

I don’t think it’s lame it’s actually really interesting. Have you read this article? May help with the project, there’s talk of which WCW would have most likely shown up, RVD as World Champ and a Tommy Dreamer heel turn.

And they're still chopping each other to this day...

I remember a video going 01:30 back when it happened of the chop fest served up between Kenta Kobashi and Kensuke Sasaki. 2005 was a great year (apart from the death of the late, great Eddie Guerrero) for wrestling thanks to WWE, ROH, TNA and NOAH.
