caley Posted October 27, 2013 Posted October 27, 2013 I actually really liked his album from a couple years back which was basically a meditation/ambient album which was so funny and weird to come from a guy who'd never really dabbled in the genre and somehow is a perfectly fitting final album because it's just out in left field. And this is actually my favourite Lou Reed song. Just something so comforting about it. Sounds like a guy just happy in his skin.
JRGoldman Posted October 27, 2013 Posted October 27, 2013 The first time I heard heroin, it was basically a religious experience. It was so unlike anything else I had ever heard and opened up a new world for me. RIP 1
Greggulator Posted October 27, 2013 Posted October 27, 2013 The first time I heard heroin, it was basically a religious experience. It was so unlike anything else I had ever heard and opened up a new world for me. RIP I knew only a few VU/Lou songs -- Sweet Jane, Wildside, Waiting for the Man, before I went to college. I loved the hell out of The Ramones and a lot of punk stuff and knew of the VU and Lou's influence but didn't make a full leap. My roommate/best friend was a huge VU and Lou fan and I remember playing NHL '94 when he put Heroin on for the first time. It was, like you said, sort of a religious experience and totally opened up a new type of music and world. My favorite Lou song is Dirty Blvd. So friggin' good.
cool arrow Posted October 27, 2013 Posted October 27, 2013 Not a huge fan but I dig some of his tunes, and I respect that he was always trying something new. Say what you will about Lulu, but at least it was different.
Andrew POE! Posted October 27, 2013 Posted October 27, 2013 WHAT? Wow, I'm totally shocked by this. I kept hoping that the remaining Velvets would make 'one last album' before ending the band forever. Some of my favorite of Lou Reed songs:
Cole Miner Posted October 27, 2013 Posted October 27, 2013 Total Bummer. Right now I am taking the journey of going through all of Metal Machine Music in one listen. Just about at the half hour point. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3-Vy4VRRO30
Big Fresh Posted October 28, 2013 Posted October 28, 2013 I suggest you all download tonight's episode of Penn's Sunday School podcast. If you don't know, Penn Jillette and Lou Reed were very close friends about 20 years ago, and tonight's episode was a bunch of good Lou Reed stories. And Penn gets very emotional.
J.T. Posted October 28, 2013 Posted October 28, 2013 I was never a fan of the VU or Reed but I respected his creativity, his courage, and his sincerity. At least someone in the music industry dared to be bold.
DEAN Posted October 28, 2013 Posted October 28, 2013 "The Kids" is so the greatest Lou Reed song. So pathetic and genuine in the honesty of the feeling he has for her. The the only way can have her is when she is a complete wreck- so he's glad she's a wreck. It's got my favorite line from a Lou Reed or VU song. "I'm just the waterboy. The real games not over here." I first heard Lou Reed in 1978 or 1979 because they actually used to play stuff on the radio in the old days- and they used to "Sweet Jane" (and "Rock and Roll") from ROCK AND ROLL ANIMAL. The excesses of that version has fallen out of favor with the most, but I'll always remember being 13 and playing it as loud as I possibly could because it was sooo fucking bad ass. So it's my favorite "Sweet Jane" I bought everything by the Velvet Underground when it was re-issued in 1985 to coincide with VU being released- and that is as life-changing as buying Hank Williams 40 Greatest Hits when you are 18. Who can pick a favorite Velvets song? I loved this one the longest:
Big Fresh Posted October 28, 2013 Posted October 28, 2013 Who can pick a favorite Velvets song? I loved this one the longest: "Rock n Roll" is the VU song with the most plays on my iTunes, so it probably makes sense to go with that one.
DEAN Posted October 28, 2013 Posted October 28, 2013 Two more of my favorites: The coolest guitar sound. Please revel that this is a cat lover video:

Thanks for the heads-up. Also, DEAN is correct about the live "Sweet Jane." Steve Hunter and Dick Wagner at their finest. 1
Curt McGirt Posted October 28, 2013 Posted October 28, 2013 Death From Above already posted my favorite. Pretty dark times back when I played that a lot.
Lacelle Posted October 29, 2013 Posted October 29, 2013 I've always been partial to Vicious. Great rock & roll song.
cool arrow Posted October 29, 2013 Posted October 29, 2013 Not a great song by any means, but certainly a memorable video: http://www.metacafe.com/watch/sy-36166905001/lou_reed_no_money_down_official_music_video/
Big Fresh Posted November 7, 2013 Posted November 7, 2013 Reminder: Lou Bega is not Lou Reed. http://www.spin.com/articles/lou-bega-lou-reed-death-confusion-tribute/
cool arrow Posted November 7, 2013 Posted November 7, 2013 Nor is Iggy Pop. http://www.gigwise.com/news/85587/Etsy-confuse-Lou-Reed-with-Iggy-Pop-with-tribute-t-shirt
Ace Posted November 8, 2013 Posted November 8, 2013 The site has a gimmick like that. If you look at their Michael Jackson shirt, it's mid90's Prince.
