Wrestlers are Recycling “Allegedly”

Recommended Posts

To balance out the trash thread, we should have one dedicated to good deeds. Make-a-Wish, friendly meetings, not being a creep, etc. It’s important to address the terrible things and act accordingly on them, but for our own mental health we should take a moment to find something to smile about.

For the last several years, I've involved myself in a traditional hobby with a twist -- I send out birthday cards for celebrities to sign. The cards are specifically for my daughter and, before her 2018 passing, my wife. I always try to think different to try and surprise family.

I started doing this for my daughter (who turns nine next month) when she was 3. Based on the books I read to her when she was a tot, I got cards signed by various authors and illustrators. It moved on to some of her favorite cartoons on TV and streaming (pretty much the whole voice cast of "Blaze and the Monster Machines" signed cards for her, plus several "PAW Patrol" voice actors signed the first page of an actual script from the show). When she was 3-4, she had this phase where she watched anything and everything that's tot-friendly and British on Nickelodeon and YT. That led to her getting signed cards and photos from three "Peppa Pig" voice actors, the narrator of "Hey Duggee" , one of the Chasers on "The Chase", the entire cast of "Countdown" (she actually learned how to put letters together to form words by watching episodes of the show), plus membership in the "Sooty International Fan Club" by Matthew Corbett.

As I mentioned previously, she's starting to show interest in wrestling, so I decided to show her some non-WWE content pre-pandemic. She really got interested in Thunder Rosa, so I wrote to the studios in Atlanta where they tape NWA Power prior to a taping and hoped for the best.

A few weeks later, Rosa returned the card (based on what she wrote in front of the card, she took it back to her home in Texas to mail it). She wrote a wonderful birthday message to her, which I'll share with her next month. She could have just dismissed the card, sloppily write a signature and move on, but you could tell she took her time to think about what to write and seemed to really appreciate the request.

I have a few other requests out to wrestlers, so we will see what happens.

This thread isn’t going to do well because it doesn’t allow people to salaciously point the finger and bask in scandal...

BUT I would like to add CM Punk paying off Joey Mercury’s mortgage when he was going through personal problems

Maybe if we have a harsher tone and phrase kind things in an aggressive way it’ll be a more popular thread.

Can you believe that Punk? Paying off Joey Mercury’s mortgage. Who does he think he is helping someone going through person problems? Ugh.

5 years ago in San Jose at the 2015 Wrestlecon. My brother and I met DDP. DDP is my brothers favorite wrestler it was our first Wrestlecon we were excited and nervous cuz wrestling is our favorite thing in the world and everyone there could have been Sinatra to us we were in complete awe. Well there was a moderate line for DDP my brother, Steve is his name and thats how i'll be referring to him from now on didn't want to wait in the line. I told him "Steve we are waiting i. line you are meeting DDP." So we get to the front of the line at the table they got 8x10's spread out on the table, DDP's then wife was standing there, Steve and I were discussing what 8x10 to get and I told Steve "get the one with him holding the belt you were there." It was the Spring Stampede shot where DDP has the belt upside down, Steve agrees we get to DDP, his wife informs him we were at the show displayed in the picture (I wasn't at that show but thats another story for another day) DDP seemed genuinely excited that "we" were at the show where he won his first world title.  I told DDP "You know how every Nitro for like 2 years ended with the nWo beating you up?" DDP was like "yeah I do" then I was like " well he (referring to Steve) cried every time the nWo beat you up." DDP looks at Steve says "dude come here" gives him a hug like Steve was his solider son returning form 'Nam who walked up on the porch. He put the WCW World Title on Steves shoulder writes him a personalized autograph that read something like "Yo Steve sorry about making you cry feel the Bang 3x champ DDP" and takes a picture with Steve (who i think he he could have would have walked off with the belt), shakes his hand thanks us for coming and sharing that story with him. It was the coolest moment ever. DDP one of the good guys. Made Steve and I feel like a million bucks, and like we were his long lost buddies.

There’s an old saying that goes something like “Even (bad person) liked his dog.”

historically, look at Eddie Graham. Amazingly charitable with the Boys Ranch stuff, but obviously the Snake Pit stuff shows what a sadist he was.

Ron Fuller devoted 4 episodes of the Studcast to the Snake Pit.

basically, it’s where the shooters in Florida would work out and when necessary smarten up fans or wanna be wrestlers by shooting, hooking, etc on them. Some like Ron and Jack Briscoes did it reluctantly. Some like Graham and Bob Roop took pleasure in it.

I met DDP (and Kimberly) back in ‘97 when tickets for Slamboree went on sale. They both were super nice and down to earth, and they even pretended to care when my geeky high school ass mentioned talking to them on their AOL Grandstand board.

I think I may have posted my story of having a few with DDP and Paul Wight way back in the day. Suffice it to say that I am a rather large man, (5 '11 and around 240 when I'm in shape, maybe 260 when not working out). DDP makes me look small and of course Paul Wight dwarfs him. Somewhere on Queen Anne ave a motorist returned to his car to find the hood horribly dented in. This is what happens when a drunken giant thinks he's being funny and drops a headbutt on a parked vehicle, if you think for a second that either DDP or myself told him not to do that, you are of course, dead wrong. As far as I'm concerned after banging down a dozen boiler makers Mr. Wight may do anything that he bloody well wants do and I'm sure not going to be the guy to tell him to "Cool it!"

My DDP story... June of 1996, Wheeling, WV.. the Monday Nitro where Kevin Nash made his WCW re-debut. One of my grade-school friends won a contest sponsored by a local Domino's to win 4 ringside tickets(ended up 3rd row) and a pizza party with a WCW superstar. They led us down to the room where the party is, which is adjacent to the locker room. As we're sitting in there waiting for the party to start, a few wrestlers were walking through the room as it led to the main concourse. We said hi to Ric Flair, who gave us a head-nod but basically no-sold us and the Public Enemy who were pretty cool. Then DDP walks in. He's the guy joining us for the party. He was still a heel at the time but he couldn't have been nicer to this scrawny 14-year-old kid. Took time to talk to us, signed some things and grabbed a few pictures with us. Was a really cool experience.

One other remembrance from that evening is Randy Anderson crashing the party and stealing a slice of our pizza. As he walked away, I yelled "Hey, Pee Wee!" which led to this picture of him turning around and looking at me mid-bite. It was hilarious. That was a fun night.

I have been super lucky when it comes to meeting pro wrestlers. Through my friends on the Vancouver and Osaka indie scenes and through just plain crazy good luck,I have had the opportunity to collect little personal memories of people like Bryan Danielson, Tajiri,  Jun Akiyama, Suwama, Chono, Razor Ramon RG, Dump Matsumoto, Tsuyoshi Kikuchi... and all of them went out of their way to be extra-nice to me or to someone I know. Even people with reputations for not being friendly to fans, like Akira Hokuto and Abdullah the Butcher, have been supremely friendly and kind to me.

There are a lot of scumbags in pro wrestling, but there are also a lot of good people. One example:

Atsushi Onita was a special guest on Osaka Pro's 14th Anniversary Show in April 2013. At intermission I got out into the lobby as fast as I could to take advantage of the opportunity tp pick up some Onita merch. I got to his table before he did, and snagged a pair of Onita sweat bands (you can see one of them on my wrist in the above picture). I didn't have a ton of cash on me, and that was an affordable memento.

There was a kid, around 12 at the time, who was always friendly to me at the various Osaka Pro shows and events. He had an autograph book that had been signed by all kinds of wrestlers. He really wanted to add Onita's autograph  to his collection, but Onita's manager (or whoever he was) was firm in insisting that the kid had to buy something first. The kid had less money on him than I did, and he was pretty clearly heartbroken.

So, I handed him one of my new wristbands, which he put on and used to get into the autograph line.

Then, I saw Onita staring me down and gesturing at me to come over. I figured that I was in for a bollocking, but instead Onita pulled up a chair, sat me down beside him, and threw his arm around me. I had just taken money out of his pocket, and he had seen me doing it, but because I'd done it to help a kid he apparently loved me for it. For the remainder of the intermission, everyone who took a picture with Onita took a picture with him and with me.

Imagine a pro wrestler rewarding you for costing him merch money! It really happened.

I had to look up the Onita sex scandal after reading that (because the thread is what it is and I was thinking the worst) and not only does it not seem bad to me, it also seems really funny, if inappropriate for his position:

Spoiler

Like fellow professional wrestler, Scott Steiner, Onita has also claimed to have broken Wilt Chamberlain's record of sleeping with 20,000 women. Coincidentally, his exit from politics was forced by a sex scandal in which he was alleged to have used government accommodations to host a threesome with a pornographic film actress and a female employee of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transportation.[76]

Great idea, @OctopusCinema.

Mick Foley is one of my 10 favourite wrestlers ever. Mick Foley was the first heel I ever liked as Mankind when he debuted in the WWF in 1996.

In 2003, Mick Foley came to a town for a book signing for Tietam Brown in July 2003. The queue was massive. I find travelling, standing up and walking difficult with the Cerebral Palsy. The shop was supposed to close but Mick Foley insisted it stayed open so he could meet all who wanted to. I've never queued as long for anything. Mick Foley was really nice to me. I got a handshake, signed book and photo with the man behind the Three Faces of Foley: Cactus Jack, Mankind and Dude Love.

Years later I got to thank Mick Foley on Facebook for what he did and he thanked me. I'd like to do so again here.

This is a pretty little thing, but it was a kind gesture and sticks in my memory. In 2001, I went to an indy show where Christopher Daniels was wrestling in the main event, and I wore a Curry Man t-shirt. After the show, I stopped at a Denny's about a half-hour down the road. About 5 minutes after I sit down, a large group walks in, most of them wrestlers from the show, including Daniels, and they get seated in an area pretty much right next to me. I figure since this wasn't a public appearance, they're just here to eat like I am, that I'm just gonna leave them alone and sit and eat my food. I think I did a decent job not looking too much at them, though they were moderately loud and I couldn't help but overhear conversations. Turns out it's apparently Daniels' birthday, and they've got him a cake. At one point, Daniels cuts a slice of the cake and brings it over to my table, saying, "Nice shirt. Wish I had one just like it."

About 15 years ago, Colt Cabana stiffed me on some merch. Waited for about 3 months before absolutely burying him on this board for fucking me out of a meagre amount, maybe $30 (heaps to me at the time, I was a student).

Within hours of posting it here, he was super apologetic and said he'd make it up to me. Sent me a huge swag of match worn stuff and some DVDs, autographs etc.

Class act.

We were driving up to Vancouver from Seattle to go to a WWE show. At the border crossing, my friend notices Foley and Terry Funk both heading inside one of the customes buildings. My friend pulls over and goes inside to try and meet them despite me insisting that  maybe this wasn't the best time once we got inside and could see they were having a difficult time getting across the border. My friend insists on waiting and they finally finish up. My friend approaches them and despite the frustrating experience they just had both could not have been nicer. They signed a couple of autographs and chatted for a minute before leaving when they easily could have said "Sorry, no time, got to go" and really nobody would have blamed them.

One more Terry Funk story, though this one is really more about ICP. It's from Funk's book. Apparently word had gotten to ICP that Funk was a little annoyed they used him in the Stranglemania DVDs without asking him. This was what happened when they finally met:

I swear if any stories about Funk being a scumbag come out that may be what makes me lose all interest in wrestling.
