The DC Entertainment Thread

Superman saved the soldiers in Smallville before the events in Metropolis. That's why they were working with him in the first place.

Bingo.

This thread should probably be used for the upcoming movie from now on. I think we've exhausted this Man of Steel discussion. It's just gotten crazy now.

Every time i think that, someone starts it up again. (Ditto IM3 in the Marvel thread)

I wasn't comparing Superman to terrorists.  I was saying that people in the MoS universe would, more realistically based on actual events, be treating him like a terrorist, given what was presented to them in the movie.

I tend to agree. People, in this world anyway, have such an itchy trigger finger to paint anyone and anything as evil, along with being inherently ignorant. If something doesn't go completely perfect, people lose their shit. Given that Supes was involved in a battle that destroyed a city, everyone would overlook the fact that he just saved the world, and would instead be asking just how 'Murican he is, they would be skeptical of whether or not he'll turn on them, etc.

EDIT: But the world in the movie is not this reality and it never could be.

I actually agree with Mike, as well.

I was just re-watching the Reeve Superman film the other day - call me old-fashioned but that will always be my idea of a perfect Superman movie - and I was thinking about this very thing during the iconic "Who's got you?" scene. In that movie, the public's introduction to this strange and hugely powerful visitor was him saving a famous reporter and untold number of bystanders from a falling helicopter. And when he's asked his name, he very humbly responds, "A friend."

Contrast that with the general public's introduction to Supes in MOS. The military takes him into custody because they think he's dangerous, then after he's released he takes part in a giant battle that leaves Metropolis fucking rubble. And to top it all off, he takes justice into his own hands and executes the guy who was after him.

Yeah, I suppose people "in the real world" would still be leery of Supes even in the Reeve incarnation but I'd like to think they'd at least be somewhat optimistic and positive about his presence. The MOS version, though, based on his actions I don't how people could be anything but scared shitless of him.

Superman's introduction to the public/military was him assisting them during the initial battle with the Kryptonians. This is where they realize he is good and a protector. Nothing that happened in Metropolis would change that viewpoint. The battle with him vs. Zod didn't destroy the city. The city was already destroyed when Superman arrived. He was shutting down the machine over the Indian Ocean.

Jesus Fuck.

Of course, rumor is that the beginning plot of "Totally-not-the-Justice-League-Movie-Its-Really-Man of Steel 2" is that at least Batman is leery of Superman, so this kvetching is for nothing, because its being addressed already.

For a moment there, I forgot this lovely thread of death existed, so I'll bring this over from the TV thread...

A lot of new info just came out about the new GOTHAM series.

-Apparently, they're using a SMALLVILLE model where the last episode would be the one where Bruce puts on the cape.

-Bruce will be about 12 when the show starts.

-The show will feature known characters like Catwoman and the Penguin, in some form or fashion.

I still don't see how this works.

And to follow up:

It really must be said for the 10000000000th time: If you want to make a Batman show, then just MAKE A BATMAN SHOW. The viewing public is smart enough to differentiate between the Batman on TV and the Batman in the movies.

And of all the major superheroes, he's the one who most easily lends himself to the small screen, because there are virtually no outlandish superpowers to deal with among his core cast. Even the more "out there" characters in his rogues gallery (i.e. Croc, Ivy) could be easily rejiggered to work on a TV budget. Unlike a Superman or X-Men show, you wouldn't have to sacrifice anything that people like about Batman's world to make him fit on the small screen.

In some ways, I think Batman is an even better fit for TV than the movies, because the longform storytelling would allow you to delve deeper into his supporting cast, not just of villains but the Bat Family as well, and utilize characters who'll never see the dark of a movie theatre because by the time any film series gets to the point where they would be brought in....boom, time for the reboot. I mean, you're never going to see Barbara Gordon or Tim Drake or Stephanie Brown, and on and on, in a movie. Never.

So just make a motherfucking Batman show.

I just watched the first season of Arrow and whats out of the 2nd over the Christmas holidays and that's pretty much the perfect format for a Batman TV show surly?. You show his training and becoming Batman in flashbacks and use the bulk of the episode to show an already established Batman in the current time. You introducing Robin from the 2nd or 3rd season and have them move on/replaced/killed off etc as the show goes on.

Which brings me to my question. Whats the deal with all the Batman villains in Arrow?

Arrow gets a lot of overflow of Batman rogues in general since his rogues gallery is pretty small and meh to begin with.

And Batman's/Titan's B-C level rogues are still more well known than Ollie's A-Level, so it works.

That and it keeps us geeking out that Arrow is actually using DC properties in their TV show, while the Lord of Light knows what the fuck Marvel's waiting for in theirs.

Fair enough. Admittedly i know nothing about Green Arrow other than what was in Smallville and and a couple of appearances in DC animated shows and movies. I'm guessing the Smallville and Arrow versions are pretty different to the comic version?

http://latino-review.com/2014/01/batman-vs-superman-dcs-game-changer-casting-notes/

A "trusted source" tells Latino Review the movie The Rock is working on this year is Justice League, which will film back to back with Batman vs Superman to capitalize on actors being available and a hot BvS ending.

Take it with a grain of salt but it's enough to wet your pants over.

Well, Smallville basically just took his background and made him Batman x Iron Man with a bow. He's only really recognizable as Ollie in the most superficial sense.

Arrow on the flip side actually adds a lot. The island gets far more backstory and Ollie is way more of a badass than he was originally. He also has a family, which is uh...new.

The thing about Ollie in the comics is that he's REALLY SIMPLE. Rich guy washes up on island, becomes amazing with a bow to survive, becomes urban Robin Hood/bleeding heart Liberal. As long as you keep that intact, the rest is pretty malleable which is why such distinct TV adaptations are possible.

I thought "Batman vs. Superman" would end up being the Justice League movie but it'd be great if they spread it out over two movies.

Superman's origin is complete. They did a good job with that.

Batman doesn't really need an origin. I know the Nolan films are separate but everyone knows the deal.

The other characters though.. it'd be best to introduce them in the first film and then go from there.

Bringing in Franchise Viagra to save the Green Lantern property would be kinda brilliant.

And the truth is, if there even is a market for a Green Lantern solo movie out there, and I remain unconvinced that there is, I don't think that market particularly cares who's wearing the ring. I'm sure I'll get blasted by somebody with an encyclopedic knowledge of the character, but I've never felt like Hal Jordan was such a strong character in his own right that you'll be missing out on a lot if he isn't the Lantern you build around.

Kyle, Guy, John, Kilowog, new Arab guy whose name I can't remember, Mogo, G'Nort, Alan, Arisa, Tomar, Ch'p, Salaak, Katma, Bodika, Laira... > Hal

I'll give you Guy. Beyond that, you're full of shit...I mean that in the nicest way possible. :)  Kids these days! Why, when I was young, we'd walk uphill five miles in the snow to get to the 7-11 to grab a  Hal Jordan GL off of the good ol' comic book rack. Who in the hell would do that for Kyle?
