WCW PPV Memories/Discussion Thread Part 2: Russo's Revenge

I vaguely recall a fairly entertaining one between Regal and Y2J.  Not a patch on Austin/Foley, but, hell, there's no shame in that.

The Duchess of Queensbury rules match? Yeah, that one was ok. I recall that one was set-up by Y2J pissing in Regal's tea.

Even worse was that they replayed the injury on Nitro the following night, completely uncensored with barely any warning... and the announcers had so little credibility at that point that no one even believed them. "Yeah yeah yeah, Sid's horrible injury. Pull the other leaaaaAAAAAAAHHH FUCK OH GOD WHY ARE YOU SHOWING THIS?!?!"

That is exactly what happened to me.

Greed 3/18/01

-From Jacksonville, FL

-Opening video spells out DDP's game plan for the world title match: hit the Diamond Cutter. OK then.

-Hosts are Tony & Scott

-Tony immediately breaks my heart a little by optimistically calling this show "the first WCW Greed".

-Match 1: Kwee Wee VS Jason Jett

-Jett is the former EZ Money, and has just made his debut by beating Alex Wright earlier in the week. Poor guy went from one sinking ship to another. Kwee Wee jumps Jett from behind to kick things off, but Jett promptly takes control on the outside. Back in, Jett hits a corner slingshot legdrop for two. Jett locks on a swinging surfboard, then drops an elbow across the back. Kwee Wee comes back and tosses Jett outside by his hair, but then misses a (really bad) suicide dive.

Jett charges, then when Kwee Wee backdrops him into the ropes, he springs back with a DDT. Back in, he hits the Afterburner (Money Clip Clothesline), followed by a standing moonsault for two. Kwee Wee backdrops Jett outside over a corner, then chokes him with a cable before trying to get a pin on the floor. Back in Kwee Wee drops Jett to the mat face-first, then hits a Thesz Press followed by mounted punches.

Kwee Wee methodically works Jett over as the crowd starts to really get behind Jett. Jett blocks a superplex and goes for a super powerbomb, but Kwee Wee turns that into a super rana in mid-air, and that gets two. Jett blocks a powerbomb with a low blow, then Kwee Wee slides out of Jett's finish, and gets a sunset flip for two. They crack heads and Kwee Wee spills outside. Jett plays possum, laying down in the ring, but first he asks the crowd to stay quiet. Jett avoids a flying elbow, then finishes with the Crash Landing (EZ Bomb), which is a suplex, which is then released so his opponent takes a powerbomb bump. Really strong opener, and they could have died out there with the time given, since Jett had just debuted and I'm not sure where in the pecking order Kwee Wee was.

-A video recaps the cruiserweight tag team championship tournament.

-Match 2 for the Cruiserweight Tag Team Championship: Elix Skipper & Kid Romeo VS Billy Kidman & Rey Mysterio Jr.

-Kidman & Romeo start. Romeo hits an alley-oop bomb, then tags Skipper. Romeo wheelbarrow slams Skipper onto Kidman, and that gets two. Kidman comes back, and gets Skipper tied in the ropes for a Rey springboard guillotine legdrop. Skipper hits a couple forearms, but Rey comes back with a couple rana, and sends Skipper outside. Kidman hits a baseball slide on Skipper, then everyone ends up on the ramp. Rey & Kidman knock Skipper & Romeo to the floor, then hit stereo running dives off the ramp.

Back in, Kidman & Rey hit a double-team chokeslam on Skipper. Skipper manages to send Kidman outside, where Romeo jumps him and whips him into the guardrail. Romeo gets in, and hits a short-arm clothesline followed by a choke. Romeo hits a couple chops, but stops to play to the fans, allowing Kidman to fire back with chops, then whip Romeo chest-first into the buckles before hitting a clothesline. Romeo turns a wheelbarrow into a facebuster, then cheap shots Rey.

Romeo hits a face-first suplex, but Rey makes the save. Skipper gets in, and Kidman is officially the FIP. Skipper sets Kidman on the ropes, but Kidman manages to hit a second rope BK Bomb and tag Rey. Rey cleans house, leading to a series of dives by both teams to leave everyone down and out. Back in Rey hits Skipper with a sunset bomb off the buckles for two. Skipper gets a fancy takedown on Rey. Kidman then hits an inverted suplex on Romeo for two. Skipper hits Rey with a Dragon Suplex, then Romeo adds a legdrop off the top to the chest for two. Rey & Kidman come back with a powerbomb/splash combo for two. The match breaks down, and Romeo catches Rey in mid-air off a quebrada, and finishes with the Last Kiss (Northern Lights Bomb). Skipper & Romeo dance to celebrate. Another really strong outing from the cruiserweights here.

-A short video shows the end of the stupid "Stacy's baby" angle and that resulting in Stasiak insulting "fat, toothless bald guys", thus pissing off Bam Bam Bigelow.

-Stacy comes out to introduce Shawn Stasiak.

-Match 3: Shawn Stasiak VS Bam Bam Bigelow

-Stasiak is now in his "Mecca of Manhood" phase, which will always be remembered (at least by me), for his backstage segment with Debra at SummerSlam 2001 ("I don't even know what mecca MEANS!"). He's even wearing the same tights that he would wear in that segment. Stasiak throws out some photos of himself before stealing the Hollywood Blondes' catchphrase. He just cannot pull off "arrogant" at all.

Bam Bam catches Stasiak with a punch to the face, and he crawls outside to get comfort from Stacy. Stasiak manages to hit some punches, but stops to blow a kiss to Stacy, allowing Bigelow to make a comeback. Bam Bam hits a dropkick, which sends Stasiak back outside. Bam Bam follows, but gets distracted by Stacy, allowing Stasiak to turn the tide with a jawbreaker followed by a shove into the steps. Stasiak hits a cross-body off the top, but pops to his feet instead of covering. Bam Bam fights back and hits a diving headbutt for two, but Stacy provides another distraction, and this time tosses a can of hairspray to Stasiak, who blinds Bigelow before hitting a hangman's neckbreaker for the pin. Not much of a match, but it did its purpose in establishing the new gimmick of Stasiak.

-Shawn & Stacy get frisky before leaving.

-The Cat tells Miss Jones to stay in the back during his match. She's not happy.

-Skipper & Romeo enjoy their new belts.

-A video previews Storm/Awesome VS Morrus/Konnan.

-Match 4: Lance Storm & Mike Awesome VS Hugh Morrus & Konnan

-Morrus charges in alone before Konnan comes out. The two teams brawl for a moment before settling into the match, with Morrus playing FIP right off the bat. That goes on for a couple minutes until Konnan gets the hot tag. Konnan goes for an X-Factor on Storm, but Awesome breaks that up, and now it's Konnan's turn to play FIP. The heels work Konnan over with mostly uninspired punch-kick offense. They go full-on tag formula by throwing in a false tag, then Awesome hits a really terrible piledriver on Konnan for two.

Storm tries a flying...something or other, which is really just an excuse to jump into Konnan's foot. They do a double KO spot before Konnan finally makes the tag to Hugh. Morrus hits a couple avalanches on Awesome, but turns into a superkick from Storm. Awesome follows up with a splash off the top for two, and Konnan makes the save. The match breaks down, and Morrus stupidly goes for the moonsault in Team Canada's corner. He has to stop to fight off Storm, which allows Awesome to hit a running release powerbomb for the pin. I appreciate the attempt at tag formula, but this did not have the hatred and intensity that a grudge match should have.

-Dusty gets ready for his & Dustin's tag match by having a bunch of burritos delivered for when Flair has to kiss his ass.

-Buff hires a camera man to show him asking Rick Steiner questions. Rick says he's going to kick Booker T's ass, then the two talk about someone messing with Midajah and it screwing with BPP's head.

-Palumbo & O'Haire say they'd die before losing the tag titles. We hear a producer say "clear" to end the segment.

-Match 5 for the Cruiserweight Championship: Chavo Guerrero Jr. [c] VS Shane Helms

-Helms is done with 3 Count and has his "Vertabreaker" theme and some dancers for his entrance. They start out with some nice chain wrestling, until Chavo hits a pretty vicious clothesline. Helms comes back with a gutwrench slam and a second rope fist drop for two. Chavo blocks the Nightmare on Helms' Street and hits a T-Bone suplex for two. Chavo applies a really loose Regal Stretch, before switching up to a kneebar then an Indian Deathlock, then the kneebar again. Chavo hits a belly-to-back suplex for two, followed by a stiff overhand chop.

Helms goes for a powerbomb, but Chavo blocks and hits a DDT for two, then follows up with a pump handle suplex for two. Tony tries to complement Scott on his commentary by comparing him to Gordon Solie, and Scott can't resist twisting into a "LOL SOLIE WAS DRUNK ALL THE TIME" joke. Helms hits a TKO into a face buster, then blocks a backslide before hitting a neckbreaker for two. Helms gets Chavo on the apron, then knocks him off with a superkick before rolling Chavo back inside and get a two count. Chavo avoids a second superkick, and hits a sit-out inverted suplex for two.

Shane blocks a tornado DDT, then turns a pumphandle suplex into the NOHS for two. Shane sends Chavo outside, then as a small "boring" chant breaks out (fuck those people), Shane follows with a frog cross-body, hurting his knee in the process. Back in, Shane goes up top, but Chavo charges into the corner, and Shane takes a nasty fall off the top. Chavo gets a cover and tries to use the ropes for leverage, but he gets caught. Chavo makes his one mistake, going for a Vertabreaker, and Shane turns it into one of his own to win the title. This was another really good cruiserweight match, totally different from the other two in that it was more the WWE cruiserweight style done really well than the high-flying stupid unnecessary risk style.

-Flair & Jarrett promise to make the Rhodes' kiss their ass.

-Booker delivers a short promo in advance of his U.S. title match.

-A video previews the tag title match.

-Match 6 for the WCW World Tag Team Championship: Palumbo & O'Haire [c] VS Totally Buff

-TB do another lengthy pre-match promo, and they really had some good chemistry. Lex posits that their recent losses to the champs were because of overconfidence, but still messes up the champions' names and says it won't take them long to win the titles.

After a brief slugfest, Luger accidentally nails Buff. Palumbo hits Luger with a superkick, then O'Haire hits Seanton bombs on both Buff & Luger (w/Palumbo having to pull both guys in position) for stereo pins. "That was a Georgia Championship Wrestling SQUASH!"-Hudson. That sums it up.

-BPP works out in a shower, then says since it's Falls Count Anywhere tonight, he'll pin DDP in the midst of his fans when DDP runs into the crowd to escape.

-A video previews Kanyon/Cat.

-Totally Buff need help to leave the ring after that devastating 30 second ass-kicking they took.

-Match 7: Kanyon VS The Cat

-Despite his plea earlier, Miss Jones comes out with the Cat. Kanyon goes right after her, but gets cut off by Cat. Kanyon has his right hand and wrist wrapped, apparently injuring himself destroying M.I. Smooth. Kanyon throws Cat over the top and stops to posture, allowing Cat to sneak up and hit an electric chair drop. Kanyon comes back and goes for corner punches, but Cat counters into a powerbomb. Cat sends Kanyon outside, then stops him again when Kanyon lurches towards Miss Jones.

Cat sends Kanyon upside-down into the guardrail. Kanyon makes a comeback, hitting a flying clothesline for two. Kanyon hits a suplex, followed by a slingshot elbowdrop for two. Kanyon hits a famouser out of a corner for two, then slaps on a chinlock. Cat counters into a belly-to-back suplex, but Kanyon comes right back with a neckbreaker for two. Kanyon goes up, but Cat sweeps his legs, then hits a superplex for two. Cat does some more damage while dancing, and hits a roundhouse kick to the face for two. Kanyon gets a ropes-assisted pin in the corner, but the ref sees it at the last moment, and waives off the three count.

Cat gets a schoolboy for two. Kanyon hits a ginger Alabama Slam, then transitions into a Boston Crab, but Cat gets to the ropes. Cat gets the Feliner, but Kanyon gets his foot on the bottom rope at two. Kanyon counters a belly-to-back suplex with a foreign object shot, and that gets two. Kanyon drops the ref and begs Miss Jones to get in. Cat holds Kanyon for a kick from Miss Jones, but she hits Cat on accident. Kanyon goes after her, but a second kick connects, and Cat finishes with the Feliner. I was totally expecting a nonsensical turn by Miss Jones here. The match was pretty good, and they were smart enough not to let the Kanyon/Jones angle run over it.

-Kanyon cuts off the celebration with a Flatliner, but the beatdown is interrupted by M.I. Smooth.

-Buff isn't sure whether Luger hit him on purpose or not.

-Dusty is feeling those burritos.

-Tony & Scott talk about both backstage segments that just happened.

-A video previews the U.S. title match.

-Match 8 for the United States Championship: Rick Steiner [c] VS Booker T

-Rick gets the ref to check Booker T, and takes advantage of that distraction by decking Booker. Rick pounds on Booker, then hits a Tiger Driver for two. Rick gets a surfboard, then forearms Booker in the kidneys when it looks like Booker might escape. Booker hits a suplex, but Rick comes right back with a belly-to-belly for two. Booker gets a roll-up for two, but walks right into a clothesline for two. Rick applies a chinlock, but Booker gets out, and hits an axe kick. Booker then hits a spinebuster, but Rick pulls the ref in the way of a Harlem side kick.

Rick hits a German suplex, but the ref is still out. Rick goes up, but Shane Douglas emerges from the crowd and cracks him with a cast, and Booker hits the Book End to win the title. Not much to this one. Pretty much a decent TV match.

-Animal stands over a fallen Buff. Luger gets there, and thinks it's convenient that Animal "found" Buff.

-A video previews the Rhodes VS Flair/Jarrett match.

-Match 9: Jeff Jarrett & Ric Flair (w/Animal) VS Dusty & Dustin Rhodes [Kiss My Ass Match]

-Flair's choice of ring gear for tonight: slacks and a Hawaiian shirt. He declares that he's not wrestling tonight, and that Jarrett will take both Rhodes out by himself. Animal comes out to ringside, but is immediately sent back by Charles Robinson. After plenty of stalling, Jarrett finally goes after Dustin. Dustin comes back with punches of his own, and hits corner punches before crotching Jarrett on the post. Jarrett blocks a fist drop with a foot to the face, and tags Flair.

Flair works Dustin over with chops and punches, but lets Dusty tag in. Dusty responds by, according to Tony & Scott, crop dusting the ring. Dusty hits some STIFF chops and a bionic elbow, followed by the flip, flop, and fly. Dustin gets back in, and catches Flair with a suplex. Jarrett provides a distraction, however, allowing Flair to hit a low blow. Dustin plays FIP, with the heels working his knee. Jarrett gets the figure 4, but Dustin hangs on, and eventually reverses it.

Tags are made on both ends, and Dusty cleans house, eventually dropping an elbow on Flair for two, with Jarrett making the save. Dusty tags Dustin back in, and he goes after Flair while Dusty takes care of Jarrett, which is the opposite of the angle going into this. Flair & Jarrett go for stereo figure 4s, but get kicked off and crash together, allowing Dustin to roll Flair up for the pin. Dustin holds Jarrett in a corner, and he takes a (mercifully short) stinkface from Dusty. This was what it was, a nostalgia trip for 1970s and 80s NWA fans. Not the worst reason I've seen a match be booked for.

-A video previews BPP/DDP.

-Match 10 for the WCW World Heavyweight Championship: Scott Steiner [c] (w/Midajah) VS DDP [Falls Count Anywhere]

-Michael Buffer handles the intros. DDP goes right on the offensive with punches, an inverted atomic drop, and a neckbreaker for two. BPP knocks DDP into the ropes, but then turns his back, allowing DDP to hit a flying clothesline for two. They go outside, where BPP takes control. They go into the crowd, where BPP scores with a garbage can shot and sends DDP into the Spanish announce team's location. BPP steals a crutch from a plant and decks DDP. DDP fires back, gets the other crutch, and decks BPP.

DDP puts BPP through a conveniently placed table for two. They make their way back towards the ring, where BPP takes something from another plant (that may be Paul London), and cracks it over DDP's head. BPP jaws with the plant, and DDP grabs the same thing from another plant and cracks BPP for two. They go back into the ring, and Midajah hooks DDP's ankle, allowing BPP to get a low blow.

BPP hits a big clothesline, but opts for push-ups instead of a pin. DDP tries to make a comeback, but BPP cuts that off with a t-bone suplex for two. BPP gets a bearhug, then an overhead throw when DDP escapes. BPP cuts off another comeback with a belly-to-belly for two, then applies a surfboard. DDP escapes that, and hits a DDT for a double KO. DDP makes a comeback, but runs into a back elbow for two. DDP counters a hiptoss with a DDT, then calls for the Cutter. BPP blocks, and hits a low mule kick followed by a DDT.

DDP hits the Cutter, but Rick pulls the ref out at two. DDP sends BPP into Rick, then gets a schoolboy for two. BPP gets a jawbreaker, then wallops DDP with the title belt for two, and that busts DDP wide open. BPP gets a Boston Crab, but DDP makes it to the ropes. I've never understood why that counts in a "Falls Count Anywhere" match. BPP gets the Recliner, but DDP makes it to the ropes. Rick adds a couple cheapshots, then Midajah distracts the ref (why?) as BPP destroys DDP's back with a pipe, then re-applies the Recliner for the KO win. This was a pretty good main event, as they brought the intensity and made it a tough struggle for both guys.

-BPP drapes a Michigan University flag over DDP, then adds a couple more pipe shots as the show ends.

-FINAL THOUGHTS: This was actually a pretty strong show, with the cruiserweights carrying things until the final hour. The Kiss My Ass match was good for what it was, and I really liked the main event. Not a bad way for WCW to go out on PPV. The only real bad thing is hearing the optimism in Tony & Scott's voices knowing what's around the corner only eight days later.

-FINAL EVENT: The Final Nitro

After two years, eight months, and nine days, we are finally here...

Monday Nitro 3/26/01

-"Night of Champions"

-From Panama City, FL

-The final WCW show opens with...Vince McMahon, who gloats about purchasing the company, giving his infamous "the fate of WCW is in my hands" speech. The live crowd actually cheers this, BTW. On a personal note, I'll always remember the moment I found out that Vince had bought WCW. I was at a friend's house, and they had two computers. I was on one and he was on another, and I went to WWF.Com, where the announcement was right on the main page. I said "holy shit" and told him to go to the same page. He did, and the first thing he said was "holy shit". We then called another friend, told him to do the same...and you can figure out what his first two words were.

-The Nitro open airs for the last time.

-Hosts are Tony Schiavone & Scott Hudson

-Tony & Scott kick off the show by wondering what Mr. McMahon is going to say later. They also talk about all the titles being on the line tonight, including a World/U.S. title unification. Tony has the looks of someone who knows his hours are numbered, and he's doing his best to concentrate on the show that is in front of him.

-Ric Flair comes out to respond to what Vince said. Flair runs down a list of all the NWA/WCW greats (throwing Bagwell in there for some reason), and says that Vince won't hold their fates in his hands. Flair, company man to the end, puts WCW over as "the greatest wrestling organization in the world" despite the treatment he received the last few years. Of course, his tune changed the moment he got a job with the WWF ("that place needed to be closed down a year before it was"), and that really diminishes the moment here. Flair mentions that when Vince was just starting to become an announcer, Vince Sr. voted for Flair to be the NWA World Heavyweight Champion. Flair says that while in the offices it was WWF VS WCW, to the boys it's always been about being the best performer they could be. Flair goes after Vince for never being an active wrestler and not having to do what he and the others had to, then says he can't hold the futures of the current WCW employees in his hands. Well that's just not true. Flair then challenges Sting for one last match tonight.

-UP NEXT: The World/U.S. title unification. I've always been baffled by the decision to put this on first. I guess they figured they didn't have to worry about rating or anything and just said "fuck it" and put the card in a blender.

-Match 1 for the WCW World Heavyweight & United States Championships: World Champion Scott Steiner (w/Midajah) VS United States Champion Booker T

-BPP opens up with chops, but Booker comes back with a big clothesline for two. Booker goes for corner punches, but BPP hits a powerbomb to counter, and that gets two. BPP sends Booker outside, and Midajah slaps Booker. BPP goes for a pipe shot, but misses and hits the post. Back in, BPP hits a clothesline and an elbowdrop, but opts for push-ups instead of a pin. Booker tries to fight back, but BPP hits a belly-to-belly for two, then slaps on a surfboard. Booker gets out, and hits a dropkick, then after an exchange of punches, an axe kick.

Booker hits a flapjack, followed by a spinaroonie and a Harlem Side Kick. BPP counters the Book End, and hits a Northern Lights Suplex for two. Booker slides out of a powerbomb, and hits the Book End to unify the titles. Way too short to be appropriate for either the end of BPP's reign or a unification match, but they have a lot to get through on this show, so it's understandable. Still a pretty weak way for the WCW title proper to go out.

-Vince talks to one of his lawyers, and can't resist throwing in a shot at Panama City.

-The end of the world title match is re-aired.

-Match 2 for a Shot at the Cruiserweight Tag Team Championship: Yung Dragons VS 3 Count VS Rey Mysterio Jr. & Kidman

-The Dragons get a jobber intro. 3 Count are Moore & Karagias. This is worked as a triple threat where guys can tag their own partners. Evan takes out both Kidman & Kaz, but then stops to celebrate, allowing Yang to sneak in and hit a wheelbarrow slam. Yang mocks Evan, and Rey springs in with a rana to take him down. This leads to a series of dives, ended by a shooting star by Kidman to the outside. Back in the ring, Yang hits Rey with Yang Time, but Kidman saves. Kidman goes for the Kid Krusher on Yang, but Moore breaks that up, and hits Kidman with the Bottom's Up. Kaz makes a save with a kick, then the Dragons hit a double team on Moore.

Evan hits a 450 on Kaz, but Kidman makes another save. Kidman wipes he and Evan out. Shannon blocks a Bronco Buster from Rey, but Rey counters a shoulderblock from the apron with a knee to the face, then finishes with a guillotine legdrop. This was a fun sprint while it lasted. Definitely the TV version of what the cruiserweights were doing at the time.

-Vince it on the phone talking to someone about a particular piece of WCW talent, before he's interrupted by Trish. She brings some champagne, but he's all about hitting that instead. Can't say I blame him.

-A video recaps the cruiserweight title change at Greed.

-Match 3 for the Cruiserweight Championship: Shane Helms [c] VS Chavo Guerrero

-Helms I think is someone who got screwed by WCW closing. He had that nice run as The Hurricane for a while, but it looks like he was being positioned to be a breakout star in WCW over the last couple months. They slug it out to start, then Chavo hits a belly-to-back suplex. Shane blocks a superplex, then hits a flying sunset flip for two. Chavo comes back with a big clothesline for two. Chavo ducks a clothesline, then hits a throw for two. Chavo blocks a DDT, then hits a Northern Lights suplex for two. Shane blocks a sunset flip, and gets a near-fall. Shane hits a tilt-a-whirl backbreaker, but Chavo rolls under a superkick.

They fight over an inverted suplex with neither hitting it. Shane hits a superkick, then calls for the Vertebreaker. Chavo fights it off once, but can't fight it off twice, and Shane retains. While obviously not as good as their PPV match, it was a good TV version of it.

-LATER TONIGHT: Team Canada will challenge for the world tag titles.

-Booker T says that even though WCW is closing, he will move on and prove that he is the best the wrestling business has to offer.

-Lance Storm stands at attention for the Canadian anthem.

-Michael Cole barges into Vince's office, saying that WCW fans are worried that they won't see that brand again and that the wrestlers are worried about their jobs. Vince asks Cole how he feels about his own job security before throwing him out and drinking some champagne with Trish.

-Match 4 for the WCW World Tag Team Championship: Chuck Palumbo & Sean O'Haire [c] VS Lance Storm & Mike Awesome

-O'Haire & Storm start. That doesn't last long, as Palumbo gets in and hits Storm with a fallaway slam, but he then goes after Awesome, allowing Storm to hit a superkick. Awesome gets in, and Chuck settles into the FIP role. Chuck avoids a Storm dropkick and hits a catapult, but Storm comes back with a low dropkick to regain control. Storm promptly allows the hot tag to O'Haire, who cleans house before hitting a flapjack on Awesome for two.

Team Canada gets Palumbo in the ring by himself, but O'Haire pulls Storm outside, then Palumbo slides out of an Awesome Bomb before hitting a superkick, followed by a Seanton Bomb from O'Haire for the pin. Meh.

-LAST WEEK: Bam Bam Bigelow talks Shawn Stasiak into agreeing to a tattoo match for tonight.

-Stacy comes out, and first teases dancing for the crowd before introducing Stasiak.

-Match 5: Shawn Stasiak (w/Stacy) VS Bam Bam Bigelow [Tattoo Match]

-Bam Bam thankfully interrupts Stasiak's attempt at cutting a promo. Bam Bam hits a couple punches to start, but he then misses an avalanche, and Stasiak scores with a clothesline. Bam Bam avoids a cross-body, then hits a slam followed by a diving headbutt, but Stacy distracts the ref. Bam Bam goes for the Greetings, but Stacy holds Stasiak's legs to block, and Stasiak hits the hangman's neckbreaker for the pin. Yup, that was a TV match.

-William Regal talks to Vince to first plug WrestleMania X-Seven, then advises Vince against buying WCW.

-In a pre-recorded video, DDP thanks the fans for letting Page Joseph Faulkenburg become Diamond Dallas Page.

-A video (that definitely looks WWF-produced) spotlights the history of the NWA/WCW world title.

-Vince tells someone he's about to get ready to make his simulcast address.

-Match 6 for the Cruiserweight Championship: Skipper & Romeo [c] VS Kidman & Mysterio

-Skipper & Romeo also got screwed, perhaps worse than Helms, since they went from being future players in the cruiserweight division to not having jobs at all. Tony reacts to Regal's comments from earlier, including his infamous "we've had to do crazy things here Steven Regal, including put your ass over on TV". Skipper & Romeo go right on the attack, getting Kidman down and hitting The Quebecers' finisher. Romeo cheapshots Rey before going back to attacking Kidman. Skipper gets in, and bridges out from underneath a Kidman cross-body before landing a leg lariat. Romeo gets in, but Kidman catches him with a dropick, then makes the tag to Rey.

Rey cleans house, hitting a swinging DDT on Romeo for two. Rey takes Romeo out, then the challengers team up on Skipper, leading to a Bronco Buster from Rey. Romeo clobbers Kidman with a clothesline then dumps Rey. Romeo hits Kidman with Angel's Wings, but Rey saves. Rey hits Romeo with a springboard headbut, but Skipper saves. Skipper hits Rey with a straightjacket suplex from the electric chair position, but Kidman saves. Rey wipes Romeo out, then Kidman counters the Play of the Day into the Kid Krusher to win the titles. Another decent enough sprint.

-Sting, in a room filled with hanging baseball bats, cuts a promo about his match with Flair.

-Vince walks down a hallway.

-Match 7: Ric Flair VS Sting

-Flair, in "fuck it" mode, forgoes his now-usual Hawaiian shirt and slacks for a robe (albeit with a t-shirt on), and tights. As Tony recaps the history of Flair VS Sting, Flair tries a couple shoulderblocks, but only bounces off Sting. Hudson notes that the Sting-Flair match at the first CLASH was up against WrestleMania IV. Sting absorbs a couple chops, then sends Flair outside. They go through a couple counters, then Sting hits a gorilla press followed by corner punches. Sting tries to add more punishment, but Flair goes low to turn the tide.

Flair hits a couple chops, then drops a knee on Sting's forehead. Flair hits a snap mare and goes up top, but you should know by now how it goes for Flair. Sting hits a couple clotheslines, but whiffs on a dropkick. Flair gets the figure 4, but Sting holds on, and eventually manages to reverse the hold, and Flair breaks. Sting no-sells some chops, then goes on the attack, hitting a superplex then finishing with the Scorpion Deathlock. Sting & Flair hug it out after the decision. Pretty much an abbreviated, put & paste version of every Flair VS Sting match, but that's what it needed to be. A perfect in-ring send-off for WCW.

-Vince delivers his "State of WCW Address". If you're reading this thread, you probably know how this goes.

-FINAL THOUGHTS: Well, that's that. As a wrestling show it moved briskly and nothing was too bad, but the watching it over twelve (!) years later, the show just has an air of sadness about it throughout, knowing how it turned out for almost everyone on the show, and the WCW name as a whole. It's worth a look for historical value if you haven't seen it, but if you're like me, it'll be pretty depressing, knowing that this is how the era of wrestling that you grew up with came to an end.

I am filled with grief.  I read every single one of these, even from before the board crash.

Now I want to read them all over again.

Mope.

Someone posted a link to an archive of the old board. If I was on a computer, I would post a link to the original thread.

What about going back to the first WWE draft, and running through all the brand split PPV's from the "SmackDown 6" to "Raw is Hunter" to the end of times with guys like Kenzo, Dupree and Rev DVon getting big pushes??

Hey don't knock the Rev Devon gimmick. I thought it was a great gimmick and his theme music was awesome. "He's callin my name!"

If I had all the early 2000s PPVs, I'd consider the brand split idea. I have a lot, just not all. My next project is either going to be SNME (likely) or, if I can find one misplaced DVD, the "In Your House" PPVs from the first one until Over the Edge '99.
