[Charity] Support Rev Ray in the 2023 World Series of Birding

Recommended Posts

I will once again be participating in the 2020 World Series of Birding with the Hackensack Riverkeeper team, the RiverCreepers, doing a about 16 hours of birding on Saturday May 9th.  Our run in the in the watershed of the Hackensack River, basically in the eastern parts of Bergen County and Hudson County as part of a fund raiser for the Hackensack Riverkeeper, an environmental group in my area.

Since I've been on the team we've done the mid-120 species in one day range most years except the one time we got fogged in pretty bad.

This year will be a little challenging due to COVID-19, we're going to have to do social distancing and take 2 cars.  Fortunately we went from having every county and state park closed to them starting to open, hoping that we don't run into park capacity issues due to reduced parking and head count allowed in at a time.

I was thinking of you as I put up the hummingbird feeders, does that count?

Now find us an Ivory-billed Woodpecker! I just know that motherfucker is out there somewhere!

A pretty good haul but  a weird year.  We had a split squad due to basically them laxing a lot of rules due to social distancing requirements.  We did a split squad with me and team Captain Hugh in 2 cars birding together as  a team and by the rules, a 3rd team mate Hugh's son Dan birding in different locations.  As a two man squad, Hugh and I racked up 110 species with Dan getting 18 species we did not see.  Rough day, it felt like 28 degrees (IN MAY) at 4am when we started.  We actually had snowflakes falling at points in the day.  We were also dealing with high winds, with gusts in the 30mph range during the day.

First Bird:  White-throated Sparrow

Last Bird:  Swamp Sparrow:

Bit of bad news, the Riverkeeper had a fire in the neighboring store that apparently has done a number on their offices.  They are the blue building on the right.  Nobody was hurt and their boats are not at the location but they had like 2 feet of water in their basement and it is unknown at the time of the email how bad the structural damage to the shared wall is.  So if you were on the fence about helping, every little bit will help.

There's a mama mallard about to hatch 10 eggs in the next 5 days that's literally feet from this house. I can stand on the deck and look at her. Does that count as birding?

Real sports is supposed to be doing a story on the world series of birding (in a weird pro wrestling type connection Ariel halwani is the reporter).  My team captain was apparently on the list to be interviewed but they did get back to him.

Hey fellow teens, Rev Ray here with the worst sales pitch ever. As some of you know  I do the birding thing, this Saturday is the world series of birding and I participate as part of a fundraising team for the Hackensack Riverkeeper.   If you can only contribute to only one thing, by all means contribute to the gofundme for Dean's family, otherwise any support is appreciated.   We usually tally about 125 species, our high score is 134.

From 4am til about 830pm we covered parts of hudson and Bergen County in New Jersey covering the watershed tallying 134 species,  actually setting a new team high score of 134 species (our previous high was 131).  Best birds were probably Wilson's phalarope and a merlin.  Big misses were wild turkey and great horned owl.
