As far as match types, honestly, just stick with what No Mercy had. The only gimmick matches I would even have in there is a hardcore match, which is just no DQ, and a ladder match. And the ladder match is the thing that worries me the most. To this day, no one has been able to make a better ladder match than what was in No Mercy. That match type was perfect and ever since it's just been more and more fucked up. Look, either the ladder goes up or it falls down flat. I don't need fucking animations and physics for the ladder where it bounces all around. Just give the fucking thing some weight and make sure it doesn't clip through wrestlers and that it doesn't cause collision detection issues if you're walking around with it and an edge happens to make contact with another wrestler.

Another thing VPW2 still does better than any game since is dives to the outside. Fire Pro's are hard to align and time and wwe 2k's are a fucking mess. With AEW's roster, it's essential they nail that aspect too. There was and still is something incredibly satisfying in running Liger, Hayaboosie, Sasuke, and one of the other juniors in tag matches because you knew it would feel incredibly different than a heavyweight match and in a fun way. Fire pro is doable but can be frustrating at times.

Also, did the music during the gameplay remind anybody else of AKI background music?

It TOTALLY reminded me of the AKI music. I'm glad someone else picked up on that.

I’m very ignorant on timelines of video game creation, so maybe my question is dumb. With how much they stated this is “still early in development” what is the likelihood that graphics could change? Would it be something like adding detail of things like sweat or something like giving Jericho more realistic arms?

Either way, I like the direction they’re going. A lot of my friends loved No Mercy and Revenge and that’s what got them into wrestling at the time. If the gameplay is easy to pick up, but not completely basic it could be fun to do multiplayer with non-wrestling fans.

I’m interested in seeing No Mercy style with modern modern moves. How will Fenix handle and will he be super different to play as compared to Dr Luther.

A story mode/ basic career mode would be fun. Either an actual story OR even fighting the ranks to get a title.

They showed the brief 2 second clip of the Meltzer Driver in the create a wrestler looking mode. Just imagine the No Mercy engine being Rey Fenix (and this should only be Fenix) being on the turnbuckle and being able to run across the top rope and intercept Nick Jackson with a Cutter. But only if you time it right. Or being able to counter FTR doing The Shatter Machine with a running grapple Reverse Rana. Or giving Darby a unique reversal system like they gave the MMA guys because he's so quick.

So much potential. The n64 engine is by far the best engine and nothing in the last 20 years comes close. Just picturing what could be. Doing Unsanctioned matches with ridiculous weapons. The ridiculously high steel cage they used on Dynamite. Doing Casino Battle Royals (like the battle royal / royal rumble modes). Stadium Stampede matches. The Jaguars mascot as a playable character. Having the Hardy compound as a playable arena. lol I'm sure I need to temper my expectations, but it's pretty exciting.

So when do we think the cutoff point is for roster members? Pre-Covid? I know Kingston and FTR are way too new to be in it at launch but what about Brodie Lee and Matt Hardy?

I would think since they said this game is still very early in development, not to expect it until at least Q4 2021 or even 2022. So the roster cut off wouldn't be until probably spring or early summer of 2021 if that's the case.

My bet is Q2 or Q3 next year. Maybe they'll time it for release around a PPV.

As far as what work will go into graphics, I would imagine they'll do more with textures, lighting, clipping, etc. and probably less with models.

Also, my big wish for wrestling games for years now is NO COMMENTARY! We don't fucking need it! Nearly all commentary in all sports games not named MLB: The Show SUCKS. Wrestling games are especially bad. Fuck it. I don't need to hear it. I just want to play the fucking game and not hear some stilted ass commentary from JR, Excalibur, and Tony.

One final request, just as an easter egg or something, but give us 3 bonus wrestlers: A new AKI Man, and some sort of update on Jado and Gedo from Revenge, but keep them generic looking and call them, uh, Gado and Jedo.

The worst thing is that I recall the commentary in the WWE games being decent about six or eight years ago. Not great, but perfectly tolerable if you had reasonable expectations. Then a few years later it started sucking again for some reason.

That being said, being able to turn commentary on or off would be pretty fucking easy to implement and would probably satisfy everybody.

I wouldn't even spend the GB on commentary.

Like I said, I think the only games that get commentary right are MLB: The Show, which is easy because it's not like you need constant chatter, and maybe the UFC games.

And to piggyback on Octopus suggestion...what if...what if Reseda was a venue to use?

NBA 2K does okay with it. They have too many people on their broadcasting team (I read the next gen game has two teams now) and there is some pretty great contextual calls. Harlan is a commentary god too.

But yeah, just give us some AKI beats and leave it be. Maybe down the line. Oh and hell ya at Yuke's Man & Woman. Give them some crazy unrealistic moves.

How robust do you think the create-a-wrestler features will be? I almost feel like it may be better to just focus on the core gameplay and AEW roster for the first game if you can't do a great job with CAW. And Fire Pro has totally spoiled me and other FPW players with custom textures and moves.

Yes. But allow me to suggest one tweak: What if there were 3 or 4 moves per commentator that made a talking head pop up like the TOASTY thing in Mortal Kombat? Hit a Superkick and Excalibur's head pops into frame yelling Superkick Party. Falcon Arrows Excalibur yells she's / he's done the deal. Give all of them a few. Even Taz. You get a little bit of that flavor from TV, but like you said, we don't need full on commentary and it usually takes away from the game. Just a nod to video gaming history while doing something innovative for a wrestling game.

I so want the character screen to be like Revenge where everyone is placed under their faction. The Dark Order. The Inner Circle. Being The Elite. The Nightmare Family. Kingston & The Fam. Also give me the announcers as playable characters. And managers. And randoms. Like an updated AKI Man, The Jaguars Mascot, Kenny's Cleaner girls, Tony Kahn, Conrad Thompson, The Rock n Roll Express, Gangrel, Hurricane. The more like No Mercy this is, the more IN I am lol.

I'd agree with that. Create-A-Wrestler seems to me to be a textbook example of the sort of frill they could do without in the first game and add it later if there's demand.

This is a very good idea.  JR could just be programmed to make random inappropriate comments about the women’s bodies.

That’s me, I only became ‘into’ into wrestling after a solid summer in ‘99 of Revenge with friends, which was around the time UK Channel 5 started airing WCW. I think it’s underestimated how much a decent wrestling game can be a ‘gateway drug’ to being a fan of This Great Sport. As good as Fire Pro is, its too niche and retro-looking to be that, and lord knows the 2k games are beyond phoned-in at this point.

So here’s hoping to a solid and fun core game engine for this one, to get some more kids hooked 20 years later. Like the best game remakes (not that this is one per se, but they are explicitly evoking the N64 games), they should go for the feel of how we remember the AKI games rather than how they actually were, with all the 2020 quality-of-life improvements that you’d expect. I would also dearly love to not have any EA bullshit micro transactions, carved-up gated content. Keep that to the mobile game.

Speaking of the mobile game that seems pretty far along looking at the trailer I had.  I'm hoping to get some kind of release date on that one but hope it's relatively soon.  I saw the casino one is coming out in Winter so hopefully that ends up being good.

you know damn well that for Best Friends the face will pop up with "gotta give the people what they came to see"

Flashbacks to the ridiculously high steel cage in No Mercy. You don't know hell until you're stuck trying to climb over the Tower of Babel against Mark Friggin' Henry.

My criteria for what qualifies as a successful game is a bit different.

Whats going to work for me is a game that’ll essentially allow me to create a live show to call sim matches on my YouTube channel.  I’ve got 18 of my buddies that I’m looking to keep interested in managing their guys career.  And they stay interested based on the (almost, run ins can only be assigned AFAIK) completely simulated league and the quality of it’s output.  2k18 and later 19 have stretched the taffy as far as it will go at this point in as much as I can expect from this games to put out.

So I suspended the league for a bit due to fatigue.  Still do some sporadic shows for the guys to cope with the pandemic.  But I’m really waiting on “something” before I’m willing to commit to doing a full schedule again.

A game reminiscent of No Mercy would very much fit the bill, since the 64 games were what really solidified this sim league thing as being something we could watch, create get togethers, and stab each other back.  Going on 20 years now.

But an updated to modern conditions and (even more importantly) EXPECTATIONS... and actually having it payoff, seems almost unimaginable.  It’s also hard to imagine it being the unexpected butt secks that 2k20 turned out to be.  I’m so glad I came here before I foolishly bought that game with the expectation of running a decent league.  Bullet dodged.

But man... if they pull it off.  I’m so fucking ready to do my show.

JRs would all be Jake Hager moves.
