Not just because he gambled, but because when given the opportunity to admit he gambled for a lighter sentence he'd rather lie about it for about 25 years like they didn't have him dead to rights. They absolutely did not want to ban Pete Rose form baseball, but he gave them no choice, and quite frankly that's enough for me to keep him out forever. Baseball did not ban Pete Rose, Pete Rose banned Pete Rose. 7
Tabe Posted May 13 Posted May 13 I don't like this decision. It's the one bright shining rule in every clubhouse. 2
Contentious C Posted May 13 Posted May 13 Well, we're in the worst world where rules and laws don't matter and accountability is a pipe dream, so...big surprise here. 3
odessasteps Posted May 13 Posted May 13 I still don’t know if a veterans committee will want to have him inducted. 2
RIPPA Posted May 14 Posted May 14 Ed and I were talking about this and most of the players who played with Rose were/are still very bitter about him betting on baseball. And - at least - the online sports writers are not pleased that Rose is eligible either (At least three different prominent writers have stories find their way via my feed so I am sure there are more) But that doesn't mean any of them will be on the committee - since they are plenty of folks who do things anonymously like not voting for Ichiro. And there aren't that many teammates of Rose still alive (I think we counted that there are 6 Hall of Famers who were a teammate of Rose who are still alive and two of them are because of Rose's half a season in Montreal) And - as we have seen with the various vet committees - all it takes is a Tony La Russa/Jerry Reinsdorf types to wrangle the group to get all their buddies elected 1

Travis Sheldon Posted May 14 Posted May 14 A lot of current baseball fans see Draft Kings, MGM, and Fanduel as MLB sponsors and think it is hypocrisy. Since the writers run the show, they'll just keep Pete with the steroid players. Those guys aren't getting in until the old writers die off.
Dolfan in NYC Posted May 14 Posted May 14 Does Pete even go on the regular ballot? I'd think it's just the Veterans Committee (from whom I saw a blurb that didn't sound too thrilled). Also notable that Jackson (who almost assuredly should get in) and Rose (I can think of about 14-15 reasons why he won't) weren't the only ones to get off the banned list. All the Black Sox came off, and Eddie Cicotte has a pretty good case himself. 1

Vet's Committee - specifically 2027 they announced (the Classic Era) The Black Sox will all be a part of a different Era committee and I think that is a long fucking time away
RIPPA Posted May 14 Posted May 14 Okay - correcting myself here I forgot that the HOF had revamped the Vet Committees again Now its The Contemporary Baseball Era, consisting of the period from 1980 to present day. The Classic Baseball Era, consisting of the period prior to 1980 and including Negro Leagues and pre-Negro Leagues stars. The Contemporary Baseball Era will split into two separate ballots – one ballot to consider only players who made their greatest impact on the game since 1980, and another composite ballot consisting of managers, executives and umpires whose greatest contributions to the game have come since 1980. So technically the Black Sox should be with the Classic Baseball Era - but MLB only specifically referenced Rose getting added so who the fuck knows what is happening with them
BobbyWhioux Posted May 14 Posted May 14 Gaylord Perry is specifically in because he cheated and his cheating is celebrated as "a colorful character". By that same perverse logic I argue Cicotte should be enshrined specifically because he masterminded the fix and was so obvious about fixing the series it forced baseball to make it's badly needed anti-gambling reforms. (also, you know, that keeping Bonds and Clemens out for "cheating" has always been selective outrage and purely sanctimonious hypocritical grandstanding by a bunch of self-serving twits cynically attempting to build their own personal brands as "moral" and "principled" guardians instead of just hall monitors tripping over their rings not being sufficiently kissed. Plus Bud Selig, who not only turned a blind eye to all the steroids coming in but who caused baseball's popularity crisis via the 94 strike and cancelled world series that forced the desperate turn to boost ratings via roidball in the firs place, is in the HOF with nary a peep of objection, so miss me with the moral posturing. It's every bit the cynical popularity contest as a high school ASB election and should be afford the same degree of [dis]respect.) 3

They did not turn a blind eye to steroids, they openly celebrated the entire process. The "Chicks dig the long ball" campaign was basically an acknowledgement of baseball's full embrace of dude's smashing long-standing records. The difference between those guys and Pete Rose is there was never a second of baseball history that thought gambling was OK. There was about a decade of baseball history that said, "Steroids, who cares? We don't even test fo that." 2
Tabe Posted May 15 Posted May 15 FWIW, Roberto Alomar is in the Hall and is banned. Willie Mays and Mickey Mantle were both banned while in the Hall.
odessasteps Posted May 15 Posted May 15 I thought they were just suspended when they worked for the casinos and then reinstated.
