sabremike Posted December 9, 2024 Posted December 9, 2024 It's weird that my most vivid memory of Dave Parker was him dropping a routine fly ball that would've been the final out that allowed the Mets to tie and win in extras one of the wildest games ever in 1986 at Riverfront Stadium.
RIPPA Posted January 21 Posted January 21 The HOF class will be revealed this evening Per the Hall of Fame Tracker (https://www.bbhoftracker.com/) - Ichiro and CC are definitely getting in (Ichiro is still 100% at the moment, CC is on 92.6% of the known ballots) Billy Wagner and Carlos Beltran both also have a shot (84.7% and 80.8% respectively of known ballots) Andruw Jones looks to just miss (he is at 72.4% right now) Just over half the submitted ballots have been made public 1
Cobra Commander Posted January 21 Posted January 21 Ichiro got 99.7%, CC got in, Wagner got in, Beltran was at 70%
odessasteps Posted January 22 Posted January 22 Yes, I am irrationally annoyed Ichiro was one vote short of unanimous. Should I presume it was Murray Chass until told otherwise
supremebve Posted January 22 Posted January 22 Billy Wagner has to be one of the top 10 players I was aware of for their entire career but never thought of as a hall of famer until they ended up in the hall of fame.
odessasteps Posted January 22 Posted January 22 One of the guys at work who is a Yankees fan took exception to me poo pooing Mariano as the only unanimous HOFer 2

Among closers, really only Mariano was better. Career 2.31 ERA. Exactly one season (out of 16) with an ERA over 3.00 and that was a year where he was hurt. ERA under 2.00 five times. He was really, really good for a long time.

For what it's worth, I'm not saying he's not worthy of the Hall of Fame. I'm saying I never felt like I was watching an all-time great when I was watching him. He's much more of a Frank Gore than a Barry Sanders. 3
RIPPA Posted January 22 Posted January 22 Oh that reminds me (don't ask me how) - I am enjoying the Rays fans on Twitter being upset that Ben Zobrist didn't get a single vote
odessasteps Posted January 22 Posted January 22 Went down the rabbit hole last night of watching a lot of the Mariners ads featuring Ichiro. The Ichiro and Junior one is classic.

RIPPA Posted February 10 Posted February 10 This basically was all known (or assumed) but the Hall of Fame confirmed this year's class will go in as follows Ichiro - Mariners CC - Yankees Billy Wagner - Astros Dave Parker - Pirates Dick Allen - Phillies
RIPPA Posted March 6 Posted March 6 The Hall of Fame has tweaked eligibility requirements again for the Eras committee Now if a player made the ballot but failed to received 5 or more votes - they will be ineligible for the next ballot (the era committees are currently on a three year rotation) If the player fails to gets 4 or fewer votes twice - they are "permanently ineligible" As all the stories have pointed out - this is basically the HOFs way to getting rid of roid guys Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, Rafael Palmeiro and Albert Belle each got 4 or less votes on the last ballot

odessasteps Posted March 11 Posted March 11 Was happy to hear Dave Parker will be in MLB 25 this year. Now, we wait to find out if Ichiro’s deal with Konami I think will keep him out of the Show again this year. It will be odd to be missing a new HOF.

dogwelder Posted May 13 Posted May 13 https://www.espn.com.au/mlb/story/_/id/45115659/pete-rose-shoeless-joe-jackson-players-reinstated-mlb Quote In a historic, sweeping decision, baseball commissioner Rob Manfred on Tuesday removed Pete Rose, "Shoeless" Joe Jackson and other deceased players from Major League Baseball's permanently ineligible list. The all-time hit king and Jackson -- both longtime baseball pariahs stained by gambling, seen by MLB as the game's mortal sin -- are now presumably eligible for election into the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York. Manfred ruled that MLB's punishment of banned individuals ends upon their deaths.
