AEW Revolution - 2/29/2020

Dolfan in NYC

Recommended Posts

I didn't have any until I was 32,  two years later I now have four. Sure they might look terrible when I'm in my sixties, but probably so will the rest of me. And I guess the more hair I lose, the more I feel like action needs to be taken about not looking too much like a generic office drone. Not sure about Cody's, but it'll look better when it's not as new, and he's already rich with a hot wife, so who does he need to impress?

Anyway, PPV was great. Orange Cassidy and Hangman rule, and I'm pleased for Cabana.

Notes from Tony's post-show media scrum (in other words, I endure TK's high strung awkward energy so you don't have to!):

  • Cabana fills a variety of roles. Can definitely see him wrestling for AEW on a regular basis. ? but he has signed a contract. Still talking with Cobb and would love to have him back. Refused to comment on Matt Hardy and his Dork Odor hints despite people reminding him he is a free agent as of midnight.
  • He downplayed an increased role in booking but did talk about refocusing on great wrestling during the holiday break. He did talk about getting better at filtering ideas no matter how forceful people are about their pitches.
  • Said the "hoohaw" with Statlander and Riho from Memphis was the only segment of 2020 he'd like to have back and it went against his better judgement. What's this about? Don't even remember. But it does sound like he has had to say no to Omega a lot.
  • He just about shit himself when somebody said "War Games" and immediately distanced himself from it. "it's everything to us. It's a heart and soul struggle." I love this guy. He gets it. The match is about grit, determination, and a fight, not dives or avalanche moves off cages. Fuck off open cage war games.
  • Mixed feelings about Cody's tattoo haha. It's going to be hard for you to be like Bruce Wayne in non-wrestling roles, he says.
  • Confirms he'd like All Out to be in Chicago for years. Champaign, Illinois boy really looking to Chicago as a home base.
  • Wants to do more in New York.
  • Still working on details for the second show.
  • Cody wants to be on Mondays within five years, TK shuts it down with a hard no. Wednesday works very well with TNT. Never wants to compete with Monday night football, what he considers the greatest franchise on TV. Talks about owning the jags and the potential conflict there. Also loved a Saturday ppv. Helps for European and other international audiences.
  • Dynamite overseas is difficult because he wants to keep it live. More likely they do a special event or ppv overseas. So the UK will likely get a special event either on TV or something like B/R Live (this is my own conjecture).
  • Loves watching njpw, doesn't mind guys working there so long as its not interfering with their AEW commitments. Says it hasn't been a two way street. Haven't seen their guys here. Don't hear from them often. Makes it sound like he's open but NJPW is not. Says they're welcome for all the great stuff he's done for them hah. Says they've treated his guys well when they're over there.
  • Asked about Marty and ROH, said he doesn't really like working with other companies in a bit of a dismissive tone. Very different approach compared to the previous answer re: njpw. Talks about AAA and that he's not flat out opposed but it doesn't sound likely.
  • Wants to establish Nyla's reign as a strong one. Talked about affording Britt a lot of opportunities and that she's had home runs. Puts over Riho.
  • Getting better at scheduling with people taking indie dates after not seeing much of that in 2019 4th quarter. Wants people available Wednesdays and for ppvs but other than that...
  • Talks up Archer getting into the top 5 rankings.
  • Page/Omega has been one of the most enjoyable developments of the promotion to date.
  • Video games: not necessarily just one type. Talks about multiple platforms. They are actively looking into it.

Moxley wrestling thirty minutes with a fake eyepatch compromising his vision and getting everyone to hit him there anyway is like wrestling’s version of “own the libs”.

I can imagine him coming up with this plan in Kayfabe and ranting and raving to Renee Young about it and when she points out the logical fallacies, he’s just like “Of course a WOMAN wouldn’t understand the brilliance of my plan!”

Also...very shrewd of Cody to make himself completely unmarketable with that shitty neck tattoo so other wrestlers on the roster can rise up and become The Guy instead.

You know as much as I love him, I know his style of smoke, mirrors, and storytelling can have a limited shelf life. So I wouldn’t mind it with guys like Omega, Page, Darby, Sammy, and Cassidy slowly taking over.

Those are the guys you want spread out more on these cards in the future. You also have Archer, Santana, Fenix, and others who are ripe to have fresh matches with these fresh faces of wrestling. I love Dustin, Mox, and I appreciate what a character Jericho is but, they’ll need to slowly reposition those guys, and try to make the show more about these burgeoning stars.

Women's match was dogshit. This division is an anchor on an otherwise stellar promotion and it needs an injection of real talent in the here and now. You cannot have Nyla, Statlander, and Baker learning how to pro wrestle while being the stars of the division in a company largely built on werkrate.

Absolutely.  It's even more ridiculous that time is given to this while the Lucha Bros, Jungle Boy, LAX, etc. sit on the sidelines.  I understand why they want to put Women's title matches on their PPVs and in prominent positions, but they don't have the talent.  The AEW Women's division at this point should be relegated to Dark.  I want to say 'Or scour the planet and sign some legit awesome unsigned performers' but that doesn't seem possible.

That post-match teasing of the turn by Page was excruciating to watch in all of the right ways. My God was I hoping they wouldn't taint that match with a turn that would overshadow its greatness. Let it breathe. And I still think it would be foolish to have Page turn on Omega. I get he was pissed with the post-match Bucks antics and Kenny going along with it but that would be a dick move.

I felt that.  And it was incredible to go thru that and not get the shitty traditional result.

Who is it in the business that thinks "force kiss on unwilling person" has any place anywhere on a wrestling show, let alone being done by a babyface? Why does it keep coming up? I would have figured AEW would know better.

Yeah, so so fucking stupid.  Definitely an oversight that I hope they've caught.

I love how MJF's heelishness extends to his obnoxiously terrible fake tan jobs. The other week on TV he didn't do the back of his legs, this time he didn't do his armpits, and the first thing he does it put his arms up so everyone can see his pale spots.

The match, it felt a bit pedestrian. Supposed to be a violent grudge match but it seemed to lack the intensity that the other matches had.

Yeah, there was a lot of stuff that didn't work.  Early Cody should have been all over him.  There was a dip to the ramp where MJF was selling something and Cody is just watching him all doe eyed.  Cody's offense seemed completely off considering the hate fuel.  I, like most, haven't been terribly impressed with MJF's in ring work, but I thought he reeled himself in and avoided his bad habits for this, and was good.  The fan interactions were fun and funny.  He's just not quite there in ring to be in such a position.  That said, he's well on his way.  And yeah....

Even more than the springboard, I was really taken out of the match by the airplane spin Alabama Slam. Like, that's just too much of a "fun" spot for a grudge match. I'm not sure if they were holding back for a rematch or what.

But the last few minutes were great.

I'm going back to this today to have a look.  I kinda lost my focus.  I remember feeling like multiple Cross Rhodes and then MJF being cognizant to throw a strong enough loaded punch seemed a bit silly.

Speaking of ring posts, OC’s post bump was one of the best I’ve ever seen. I (and JR) thought that dude was dead.

On a card full of excellent spots/great bumps, that may have been the best or most brutal looking bump of the night.

I've been a big OC booster since first researching him on youtube after hearing he would appear in the Casino Battle Royal.  I've made comments since the beginning concerning OC being huge money in the making.  Seeing him go out there and rip it up was just unreal.  Seems silly to say, but I'm very proud of that guy.  Those comebacks were just awesome.  And all that said, Pac was the best dance partner.  Is there a better all around heel in wrestling?  Jericho and MJF, for example, have the gift of the gab, but so does Pac, and he's second to none inside those ropes.

Revolution Predictions:

Mox wins World Championship. Jericho spends next few months trying to get back at Mox while Sammy starts questioning Jericho’s leadership of Inner Circle.

Omega & Page retain as Omega surprisingly does some heel move to win the match. Omega slowly begins his heel turn in next months leading up to match with MOX for Championship.

MJF defeats Cody with the help of Arn Anderson breaking Cody’s foot. Cody gets put on the shelf and MJF next feud will be with Darby Allin.

Darby Allin defeats Sammy. See above.

Rose retains title over Statlander as the Alien almost wins with high fever/sick..etc.

Hager puts Dustin to sleep.

PAC wins and OC gets carted out on a stretcher but yet still give the audience a thumbs up.

Dark Order wins...Exalted One gets teased (I have no idea who it will be)

Got all the final results correct on the main show. But I was off on how they were going to get to the final results.

7-0....not bad.....not bad at all.

How did I do it you ask?

The Shadow knows....

I have made it to 62 without any ink whatsoever. Every time I thought about getting a tat there was something else that I wanted to spend my money on. (Usually an expensive book), anyway, at my age I hardly see the point, and had I gotten some ink in my twenties it would look like shit now or I would have had to spend a fortune over the years to touch it up or cover it.

I have such a nostalgic fondness for tattoos being adorned only by real badasses.  Ppl that got them in the army or prison.  Anchors and Moms.  And all just blue.  Other than that I've never been fond of tattoos.  Probably because I played hockey with guys that got stupid Taz/broken hockey stick tats etc.  And then all those 'tramp stamps'.  It all just seemed dumb. Ha, I recognize this is a narrow view that I strive to surpass.  Well, there was this really great girl that I spent wonderful times with that had 'redrum' and the Twin Peaks mountains (just the single line drawn symbol) on her inner arms.  Hidden.  Great reveal.  Other than that, no thanks.

One small suggestion on the presentation of Allin to get him even closer to that next level, is let the dude’s theme play through until the chorus before Roberts does the intro. Song is singalong as shit with the drumline and simple lyrics, let the crowd get into it. Hard to do with while the intro is going on.

Everything about Cassidy’s intro/presentation was great, though.

In retrospect they could’ve taken Dustin Vs. Hager off the main card. Did Santana & Ortiz Vs. Jurassic Express instead after opening with Darby Vs. Sammy, and switch the Tag Title match, with the Cody match. The main event would’ve been hurt regardless. But at least the Cody match would’ve been less overshadowed by the tag title match happening later. I was reminded of a few Mania cards with the way this card was set-up. But then look at the OC match, those two created so much with only one week of build for that match. But then they had several months of building those personalities, and they pulled it off.

Of all the matches, that OC match still has me buzzing. Tony used the word “Magic” to describe it, and it was so true. I wonder how much of that was planned. PAC at one point picked him up for a suplex, and stopped to milk a “No pulp” chant. He didn’t even do the suplex. I can’t believe he knew they would chant in that exact spot.

Since @Matt D has been posting a lot of old Brit matches, I’ve noticed how similar to OC’s work is to that British catch style, but without wrist locks. In that it’s all clever counters that the wrestler in kayfabe is goading his opponent into. Like the suplex reversed into a stunner. He was trained by guys that are into that style so that would explain it.

Agreed, but they need to get him some cheese whiz like the Starship 'Jane' intro he rocks on the Indies.

Also, they need to get a reworked 'Copacabana' for Colt Cabana - that 'boom boom' shit is killing his career dead.  He needs to look way back to what made all those good times, great memories.  There he'll see the essentials-the aviators, the polyester jacket and the Copa-fuckin-Cabana (cover/edit is all we need; no original$ required).  Ugh, and they got that debut all wrong.  Again, Daniels should've come out first as the fake exalted one and taken the beating Colt took.  And then Colt all elbows and rolling with the punches saving the day. They would've had the place come unglued like the national anthem at the old Chicago Stadium prior to a Hawks game.

In the 70s and 80s, lots of British Army soldiers would get name, date of birth and blood type tattoos done before being deployed to Northern Ireland. A death match wrestler should probably steal that.

So the women's title match wasn't great. The women involved are too green and going for too much with maybe a 50/50 hit rate. But they also put them in a terrible spot on the card. Pac/Cassidy would've been a better follow up as OC is over enough to bring fans back up but his early comedy spots allow the crowd to recover from the tag epic before it. Kris and Nyla tried their best and they got people back by the end but it was really tough. I don't think the whole division should be exiled to Dark but between this match and some other questionable use of women they need to work on it from every angle and now.

Probably just a member of the idle rich. Although not that rich or he'd be doing the Money Mark indie show thing. I wouldn't be surprised if he thought he was famous though. Someone who doesn't get that 'Celebrity Wrestling Fan' means someone who likes wrestling and is famous for other reasons, and that you can't be famous just for going to the graps.

Maybe he's Bowl Cut Kid '97, all grown up.

Have Hangman and Kenny ever had a tag match where Kenny got the winning pin?

Also not saying it would’ve been different, but Kris was recovering from the flu. Her energy looked down in the early going.

For sure, and no shade to her or Nyla. This is a management issue.

The tag match had all the emotions. The bucks getting more and more violent trying to put them away and hangman matching that intensity and finally Omega going terminator. Perfect. The look on omega's face after Hangman slap tagged him in.. he sat there for a second like..this fucking guy.

I really like the potential of Nyla and Kris and some of the other women, but if this was my company, I'd have that belt back on Riho so fucking fast. Let her keep carrying everybody and getting the crowd going nuts until someone is actually ready to have a good match without Riho.

I cannot believe I saw an AEW crowd damn near boo the Bucks out of the building.

Ker-rist have they done an amazing job readjusting Hangman after his initial push kinda flopped.
